  1. Re:Shades of 1984 on Eye-based Navigation Research From IBM · · Score: 1

Your every action could be profiled and filed for use in targetted marketing schemes based on what you look at in stores.

Stores are already doing this. I work for a large retailer that I can't name cause I dont want to get fired. But our marketing department frequently uses security tapes to see who is buying what with what. Like peple who buy brown shorts like blue shirts and stuff. Its really no big deal.

  2. benchmarks == flamewars on Linux Intel Chipset Comparison · · Score: 1

So far, about the only thing I've seen come from benchmark tests is a ton of flame wars. People see these and they immediately say one of two things.

    1) this proves MY system/OS/chip/HD/etc.. is best.
    or
    2) This beenchmark is screwed.

I mean a linux benchmark on Pentiums? Yea here comes a linux Vs. Winblows or Intel Vs. AMD flame war.

Besides did anyone really NEED a benchmark to see that the best computer is a AMD chip with Linux running on it?

  3. slow on Java On 8-bit Platforms · · Score: 1

Java runs slow enough on 16 and 32 bit. I know there is fuctionality here, but how much can you can when you slow it down. Besides, shouldn't they be focusing on the soon to be released 64-bit platforms. I know intel is working hard on this and AMD is right behind.

  4. linux == middle ground on What Would Happen To Linux If BeOS Were GPL'd? · · Score: 1

The *BSDs are best suited for the server market while BEos is a unix designed with multimedia in mind. There in the middle is Linux trying to do it all. It want's to be a server, a desktop OS, and do multimedia. However, if BEos were to go GPL or even better, mold itself after the less restrictive BSD license, then it could mean some trouble for Linux.

Think about it, why use Linux as a server when you have BSD? And, why Use Linux for Desktop/multimedia when you Have BEos? Maybe Linux just needs to try and find itself and stop being all things to all people. Hopefully BEos or FreeBSD won't do the same or they risk going the way of Linux.

  5. from the article on Amiga As A Compatibility Tool For Linux · · Score: 3

"It [Linux] is a support nightmare due to the multiple flavors of popular versions (of Linux) and the ever-changing kernel. Retailers don't want it, and the Linux Q3A sales were disappointing."

Its becomming more and more clear that linux needs a standard distro. Like it or not, this is one of the strengths of windows. People are tired of software saying thinks like --it works with linux but with debian you have to do this and with slackware you have to do something else to get it to work.

But non-free commercial software is fairly scarce on Linux, and when it does come out it tends to fail in the commercial market, as Quake III Arena has done.

A side effect to the free-software movement. I think its obvious that the FSF has been unable to adequatley make its point that free speech != free beer. Im not saying the FSF has failed, but only not made its point clear enough on this issue.

So why does Linux need Amiga? Well, believe it or not, there are Linux users that will want to use and buy Amiga software.

see above comment. This is why Amiga will fail. It has to be baught. Linux users (right or wronge) want stuff free. I think its a frustration over paying outrageous prices for windows software with all its holes and bugs. As a result, linux users would rather take development level software for free -- even if it never gets out of development level.

Of course, all of this hinges on the final Amiga DE actually being released

    READ: VaporWare

when is amiga ever going to actually release something and just stop promising to?

Im sorry to be so harsh here, but it is kind of sad.

  6. rymes == remember on Learning Unix Concepts Through Fiction? · · Score: 1

    righty tighty lefty loosy

You might try this aproach. However, im not jsut saying come up with a bunch of stupid rymes-- rather take the fiction aproach but maybe give it a poetic spin (think homer's Iliad but in a modern setting). It sounds off beat, but those are often times the ideas that work best. After all who would have ever that that open source software would have worked as well as it has.

  7. confusion on Has The Internet Peaked? · · Score: 1

Unfortunately the problem seems to be general confusion over what the internet is and is to be. There has been a lot of concern over security but that seems to be falling to the wayside as more and more sites are becomming more nad more secure. There has also been a lot of problems with the whole information wants to be free philosphy because a lot of people seem to think this is only true to a point. That is they think -- sure free, but not how to make bombs or information on security bugs. Finally there is the entire entertainment aspect that was supposed to change the internet -- mp3's streaming media, etc... However, more and more of these issues are settled then the confusion will subside -- for good or bad. But, until the courts decide the issues, there will be some confusion.

  10. probably best choice on Red Hat Wins In US Army Contract For Linux Devices · · Score: 1

there are lots of ditros to choose from of course, but this was probably the best choice.

Of course they coudln't use SuSE because it's german.
Same goes for Corel being canadian which is a shame considering their distro is very simple.
Slackware has no corporate backing and there has no accountablitly factor. SO this really isn't an option.
Mandrake (in an effort to bring users the newest products) tends to use a lot of alpha and still in testing products which isn't the best for mission critical systems.
Caldera has had too many security problems.

I guess in the end they powerful red hat is probably the best choice. However, I wonder if solaris was considered at all. I would love to see sun competing against MS with he backing of the US army. Plus Solaris is american made, very secure and rather simple.
