It will take generations to switch, but that is the point. You want to replace things as they wear out. That 30 year old tool will still have a lot of legacy value regardless.

It is a very different time from when metric was initially intoduced. Most other countries have bitten the initial bullet for us as the first adopters. Because of it, our US cars all show kilometers in some form. Even US cars will have some metric bolts. Furthermore, because of schooling, metric is no longer the scary monster to anyone born within the last 30 years or has ever traveled remotely outside of our borders.
We, the US, have saved ourselves money short term by avoiding metric. But because of having to duplicate our tools over time for foregn parts, stripping parts by using the wrong tool, and avoiding economies of scale, I don't think we have saved so much long term.
We've waited long enough in the US for the metric switch that when it happens... I don't think it will be so much our own choice as something forced upon us by the Chinese economy pulling ahead of ours.
When I play games I prefer to do them in Japanese. I'll be happier than a barrel of monkeys if you link me to an Indy Games source that has games localized to Japanese.:3 I've settled in pretty good to my linux box over the years so my rig is not the best for games anymore.

True 3D will also fail as long as we keep the current ADD-style scene changes. (I can barely stomache them now.) Cutting between people talking is a nightmare for 3D and will always be extremely disorienting.
The current filming style in Hollywood is prohibitive to anything that isn't straight 2D and I don't see them changing it. That is just the way it is.

When you add more resolution to a standard monitor, the time to redraw all of the pixels grows by O(n^2). Naturally, if we start drawing the pixel in a single line, pixel drawing time only grows by O(n). The lack of detail had more to do with texture cache than cartridge size. Cartidge size mostly effected how much digital audio and FMV a game could hold.
GameCube disks were about half the size of Wii disks and most Wii games still felt like tech demos compaired to GameCube games.
You have to admit though... when a CD-centric game like RE2 was ported to the N64, the outcome was very interesting.
I would hope that the initial DualShock controller would be an impovement on the N64s initial designs, after all it came out 2 years later. If you would like to read at similar stories, please research the six-axis controller and the Playstation Move.
The N64 as a whole wasn't as durable of a system as I would have liked. But meh.

The old "If you are playing this game outside of Japan, you are committing a crime" on Japanese arcade cabinets comes to mind. The obtuseness of messages like that are the reasons I don't view much media anymore.
Strong hinting destroys details in letters by hammering them to pixels. Particularly in high resolution letters at small sizes such as Japanese kanji characters. When Japanese kanji characters have hinting turned on, they will become illegible by a one pixel moves. With nothing at all turn on, the character will tun into a blob of pixels instead of visible lines. There is no visual continuity anymore then. Without normal antialiasing.
Now, there are fonts that look horrible without hinting because they are not designed for it. In particular I am thinking of Inconsolata (designed for the console) which instead of looking smooth, just looks blurry.
