Are you sure they weren't doing the well known, "good cop, bad cop"? I do not think the order of torture, then bribery is random at all. The torturing effects how someone responds to bribery later.
There really is no in spite of. It's just the status quo.
It will take generations to switch, but that is the point. You want to replace things as they wear out. That 30 year old tool will still have a lot of legacy value regardless.
* When electrical standards change in the US, we don't immediately replace the outlets in every existing house with a 3-pronged one (or any other building code for that matter.) * When the walk signs were converted from english to symbols, they weren't all replaced immediately. Some still exist. * Most of us have both SAE and SI tool by now because of "foriegn parts".
It is a very different time from when metric was initially intoduced. Most other countries have bitten the initial bullet for us as the first adopters. Because of it, our US cars all show kilometers in some form. Even US cars will have some metric bolts. Furthermore, because of schooling, metric is no longer the scary monster to anyone born within the last 30 years or has ever traveled remotely outside of our borders.
We, the US, have saved ourselves money short term by avoiding metric. But because of having to duplicate our tools over time for foregn parts, stripping parts by using the wrong tool, and avoiding economies of scale, I don't think we have saved so much long term.
We've waited long enough in the US for the metric switch that when it happens... I don't think it will be so much our own choice as something forced upon us by the Chinese economy pulling ahead of ours.
When I play games I prefer to do them in Japanese. I'll be happier than a barrel of monkeys if you link me to an Indy Games source that has games localized to Japanese.:3 I've settled in pretty good to my linux box over the years so my rig is not the best for games anymore.
Indeed. Sony is one of currently three companies I would not buy any digital equipment or software from (the other two are Apple and Activision Blizzard).
The rootkit on audio CDs and the deletion of Linux support from the PS3 are not forgotten. The patent in the article is only proof the thinking at Sony hasn't changed, it is not a new trend.
Don't forget about the import company, Lik Sang. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lik_Sang. Sony destroying them basically removed my last reason to game. I don't necessarily want to play all of my games in English.
I dont' find working around the beauracrasy of gaming 'fun' anymore. That is why I mostly don't really play video games anymore.
True 3D will also fail as long as we keep the current ADD-style scene changes. (I can barely stomache them now.) Cutting between people talking is a nightmare for 3D and will always be extremely disorienting.
The current filming style in Hollywood is prohibitive to anything that isn't straight 2D and I don't see them changing it. That is just the way it is.
When someone makes a generic list of bullets, only some of them may apply to you. Some of them may have been made from experience in different situations or time periods.
It tends not to be constructive latching onto a single bullet screaming "It doesn't apply to me!!!" over and over and over again.
If you are that afraid of who your children talk to online and refuse educate them on how to interact with strangers, you should force your children to only play on Nintendo consoles with friend codes. Your talk should be better than "don't talk to strangers" and then hoping for the best. I know its hard to do a proper job parenting and trying to judge the mental maturaty level of your own children.
The kids are playing their M rated games that their parents had got them all the while the adults are being kicked off of them. The irony. This is where things are going.
I get that abuses of power happen and labeling someone who is innocent as a sex offender is the WORST type of crime and should be punishable to the same extent as someone who is found guilty of the accused crime.
I'm pretty sure they are fully well raped while in prison and it helps them greatly learn from their lessons. (Right? Not the opposite right?) Other prisoners do not take kindly to that kind of thing. Of course, this is usually glossed over in jokes and ignored.
The article you linked... 4x is an alarmist sensational number. This is slashdot. You linked an article where they clearly say 5%. On slashdot, we tend to not take kindly to arbitrary non-descript large numbers meant to scare people.
My grandmother before she died lemented how far a lot of these laws are going nowadays. It is telling when laws scare the 16 girl they are meant to protect than the 18 year old boy. This is where we are now.
You are a sensationalist. No more no less. You even called people who don't agree with you petophiles to scare people into submission. This is the new red scare to imprison people who are not communists. This is the new witch hunt to burn people who are not witches.
When you add more resolution to a standard monitor, the time to redraw all of the pixels grows by O(n^2). Naturally, if we start drawing the pixel in a single line, pixel drawing time only grows by O(n). Going forward with growing resolutions, this is going to be the only way to support the ever growing pixel counts of monitors in a sane way. Thank you.
If you think anything about this was is about an ideological point, you're not even part of the same conversaion. No one here is saying you should buy a $1500 ultrabook unless it actually fits the vision of your needs.
Much like the "ideological" Wii U user having to buy late more expensive ports of games right now, I will be buying linux games on steam. You, my friend, can keep dual booting, running wine, or whatever mystical hackery you currently do to save the benjamins by buying the Windows versions. What we are talking about ideologically here is no different.
If you only shop at Wintel shops, you will magically find all of the hardware you buy is supported by Windows. Hardware has homoginized a lot, but be careful not to mistake the few places you go to as the entire world.
The lack of detail had more to do with texture cache than cartridge size. Cartidge size mostly effected how much digital audio and FMV a game could hold.
GameCube disks were about half the size of Wii disks and most Wii games still felt like tech demos compaired to GameCube games.
You have to admit though... when a CD-centric game like RE2 was ported to the N64, the outcome was very interesting.
I would hope that the initial DualShock controller would be an impovement on the N64s initial designs, after all it came out 2 years later. If you would like to read at similar stories, please research the six-axis controller and the Playstation Move.
The N64 as a whole wasn't as durable of a system as I would have liked. But meh.
How was Firefox going to stagnate the web? By having open code? By having popular derivatives like flock? By stating that their main objectives were pushing a standards complient web and ensuring competition no matter how large or small they are?
That's what competition is doing to you. Just killing off all competitors, and have FF be the >90% browser will bring us back to the late 90s and early 00s, the heydays of IE6. With a stagnant web, little to no innovation. It's not something I am longing for, at all. If anything Chrome is currently the one to go after.
Firefox is not likely to die. It came around because of the closed source company fizzling. It might slow, but it will not dies.
Do not compare browsers thinking everybody is a corporate entity and thus is trying to stagnate everything. When open source stagnates, it is forked, then a new browser is born.
The only browser than I am stille extremely weary of is IE because it represents the player with the largest gain in creating something like a "windows only" web. We've delt with this before, and it is the last thing I want to see things going back to.
If in high school guys were taught how to detect breast cancer, the detection rate would probably be quicker than even these bras. No joke. Everyone wants to protect the things they love;-;
The drivers do not want to mention this, but if bicyclists do not have to wear helmets, it will not only increase the bikers, but *decrease* the drivers who do not want the extra resposibility. That sounds like a win-win and will help curve the people who buy their SUV murder machines.
If _you_ can be dissuaded from riding a bike by the fact that helmets are mandatory, please stay the fuck off, I don't want to have to swerve to miss your unconscious corpse because of your fashion hangups.
Most motorists do not want to take resonsibility for their driving. This is a time honored tradition. A frend of mine was on their bike and was knocked over by a motorist. The motorist just stopped for a moment, and without asking if they were okey just sped off.
I hate to point it out to you guys, but legally importing media is considered piracy by most large media companies. The old "If you are playing this game outside of Japan, you are committing a crime" on Japanese arcade cabinets comes to mind. The obtuseness of messages like that are the reasons I don't view much media anymore.
Strong hinting destroys details in letters by hammering them to pixels. Particularly in high resolution letters at small sizes such as Japanese kanji characters. When Japanese kanji characters have hinting turned on, they will become illegible by a one pixel moves. With nothing at all turn on, the character will tun into a blob of pixels instead of visible lines. There is no visual continuity anymore then. Without normal antialiasing.
Now, there are fonts that look horrible without hinting because they are not designed for it. In particular I am thinking of Inconsolata (designed for the console) which instead of looking smooth, just looks blurry.
Tough Love, you are taking a very small view of the problem. You are the one demonstrating ignorance here because you have never had to deal with anything outside of ascii.
Hinting looks like utter shit. The only way I can tell the difference between hinted fonts and when anti-aliasing is totally turned off is by the CPU usage. The ultra-visible pixels are an utter eyesore.
Games, games, games, games. Nintendo didn't learn from the 3DS, apparently--the launch window library is fairly "meh", and we don't even know launch titles except for NSMBU

There is a point to all of the posters but:
1. It should be labeled no different than high fructose which has gone from unnoticed to hated.
2. It should be up to the companies, not the government.
3. The GMO companies are like a black plague, litigating normal farmers who don't use their products. People have a right to be able to avoid them.
