Disney to Acquire Lucasfilm, Star Wars Episode 7 Due In 2015

Jason Levine writes "Disney will acquire Lucasfilm, including the Star Wars trilogy. Additionally, Star Wars: Episode 7 is due to be released in 2015, with more feature films on the way. George Lucas said, 'For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.'"

This is may be a best case scenario. Whedon can write and direct and has been known to put a good scene on film. As much as everyone likes to say that Lucas can't really do anything, there are are some really good shots, and some passable dialog, in Star Wars. The opening shot of the ships, Luke looking over the desert, the first time we see Darth Vader, are all excellent. Lucas did define the technology we expect to see in a special effect film.

That said the world has left Lucas behind, and it was one reason that the prequel was disappointing. What was acceptable in 1977 is simply not where we are in the 21st century. We know what technology can do, and just showboating technology does not a movie make. There are times when a little bit of fx can go far, and this is what Whedon can do as he worked on very tight budgets.

But that still leaves a problem with episode 7-9 in that there is a lot out there that defines what happens after Jedi. One can do what they did in Star Trek and make anything outside the live action content non-cononical, but that risks making the biggest fans really unhappy as the books defined Star Wars for so long, and there can anything more than a cameo from the original stars would be likely to be problematic. Who own the right to the Skywalker kids?

My impression was that the third set of three films was go be the rebuilding of the empire. Now we probably have a rebuilt empire, with one Skywalker-Solo child at the lead as a good Jedi, and another as the bad Sith. But this is pretty much episode 1-3, except with the no annoying child. What could be interesting is grand child who we actually see trained as Jedi and tormented by his duty to his parent, uncles, and aunts. After all, the Jedi training is supposed to be so great, but it has never really be fully explored.

As an aside, I will remind people that anything with "A New Hope" or "Episode" in it is not the original Star Wars.

That is a very interesting link, but upon reading the article, it seems to contradict the claim you make. From the article:

As a result, the negative for Star Wars is filled with CGI-laden modern alterations. When Lucas says that the original version physically does not exist, this is what he really means--the negative is conformed to the Special Edition. Of course, it would be very easy to simply put the original pieces back and conform it to the original version, or use the separation masters and IPs, or simply scan the old pieces for a digital restoration, but I digress.

And, incidentally, this applies only to the changes made in the 1997 Special Edition release. Additional changes made in the 2004 DVD release (such as the replacement of Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christiansen in the final Force ghost scene) were done entirely digitally; none of these affect the original film negative.

As the article notes, fully restoring the original film could be done – it would just take additional work:

In Star Wars' case, using scans of the separation masters is perfectly viable, and though IPs and Technicolor prints are not ideal for masters they could be usable if cleaned up digitally. Perhaps the easiest option would be to simply follow the 1997 restoration pattern but in the digital realm: scan the negative in 8K, then scan the stored pre-SE shots or re-comp them, and fill in any damaged areas with IPs or separation masters, reconstructing the original cut, then digitally remove dirt and damage, and finally use a Technicolor print as a color reference for the Digital Intermediate created. Such a product would be theatrically viable, as pristine as when it had been shot, and 100% faithful in image and color to the original release.

Disney has done other film restoration jobs in the past which are at least this complex and expensive, if not more. And while Lucas really cared about his new vision of the original trilogy, Disney executives only care about what will make them more money. And there are enough Star Wars enthusiasts to make a project like this financially worthwhile, especially if the Blu-Ray set was sold at a premium price.

Groan. No. If you claim the similarities between those two are enough to make it theft, then all ideas are stolen. They are both space opera, there the similarities end. The spice, sandworms, precognition are HUGE themes in Dune, with no equivalents in Star Wars (if someone was smuggling "aura spice" in Star Wars, it would have amounted to little more than a shout-out). A name similarity is nothing, if you knew Dune you'd know Alia has virtually nothing in common with Leia (Alia embodies the "creepy child" trope in Dune, and becomes a villain in the later books). The conflict dynamics are completely different - in Dune the most obviously evil guys (the Harkonnens) are just a rival faction and the empire/guild by comparison aren't evil, just misguided and terrified of change. Some of the "good" groups are extremely morally ambiguous (Bene Gesserit - compare that to the Jedi!)

If you do want to look at "theft" in Star Wars, look rather to the franco-belgian comic Valerian & Laureline. Lots and lots of the French SF aesthetic of Star Wars is pretty clearly copied from that comic, including Leia's bronze bikini costume, the Mos Eisley cantina orchestra and most of the aliens. Lucas is known to have read these (in the US) pretty damn obscure comic books.

But again, the story is not similar, so it's really more like uncredited aesthetic inspiration than copying. Considering how big a target for lawsuits someone like Lucas would become for admitting sources of inspiration, it's no wonder he denies it, just like Disney denies inspiration from "The White Lion" etc.

Oh yeah, how can I not be pleased. The most evil company in the world, who totally destroyed the Muppets, destroys anime every chance it gets and even does a hatchet job on its own products like Pirates of Auschwitz, WTF was that movie about? You think you go see a nice adventure movie, you get a scene that would have been censored out of Shindlers List. It could have been a Korean film for its going from light comedy to stuff even the Swedes need to sit down to digest in a movie.

As for merchandising the hell out of a movie, Disney invented that, they made some good serious movies but lets face it, Star Wars is going to get their cartoon treatment. Remember Pocahontas? Well, now imagine that being done to Star Wars. Not only won't Han Solo not shoot first, he won't shoot at all, the baddy will die (but not to visibly) by some hilarious accident created by his own stupidity possibly with the aid of a bumbling side-kick.

Star Wars was as popular as it was because it managed to steer a fine line between the "OMG, son, cover MY EYES" of PoftheC hardness and the total fluff of disney toons. You can't veer from it to far in either direction without loosing the Star Wars feeling.

Jar Jar Binks and the massacre of child jedi's shows this. Jar Jar Binks was to goofy and the massacre of kids so starkly shown removes ANY sympathy whatsoever you might feel for the "hero". Yes, the original Darth Vader blew up an entire planet which no doubt housed billions of kids some gutsy but cute orphans playing with a kitten BUT YOU DIDN'T SEE THIS. So DV was bad but not gobsmacking evil where the only character development you want to see is the character dying.

The movie "Pirates" with Walter Matthau had the same problem, the audience wanted a light hearted action movie, they got a dirty gritty pirate movie were the lead characters just ain't nice. Real pirates ain't nice and so neither was captain Red. You can argue whether Pirates is a good or bad movie but you can't argue is that this is not what the audience wanted.

Star Wars is light adventure, the heroes are heroes, the baddies are bad, one of the heroes gets the girl and everything is alright. THAT IS STAR WARS. Not to scary for kids, not to tame for adults. When people claim that of course you don't like the prequels, you grew up from being 6 years old... they forget. EVERYONE liked Star Wars. It wasn't a kid movie at the time of launch. Adults saw it too.

Some fans have retconned the series themselves. Handsup anyone who thought Boobie Fett was cool... DID YOU SEE THE SAME MOVIE? He is the classic bumbling side-kick to the baddie, he gets wiped in the first fight in seconds. Yes, he does capture the hero, the baddies side-kick always does this and then screws it up, you never watched cartoons before? Yet Bumble Fett is now in fanfiction and the extended universe some unstoppable killing machine equel to Vader. Except why would an equel be so easily threathened? Nah, retconning doesn't need logic.

This has created a view of Star Wars that is so varied, no new movie could possibly satisfy. It is the reason recent Star Wars games have no lived up to the potential of the license.

I severely doubt Disney will make anything worth watching out of all this. They will try to wrap a Star Wars skin around what they think sells right now. "Star Wars: Twilight" anyone? Moody Sith in high school? Don't think that someone at Evil HQ isn't writing a draft for it.

Yes, they can make the prequels, they proven that with Pirates of the Carribean. What didn't I like about the prequels? It went to wildly from slapstick to hard action (Jar Jar Binks and the killing of the Jedi children) same as the nasty scene with the hanged kids in PotC which just didn't find in what seemed at first to be a action-comedy Indiana Jones style movie.
