Disney to Acquire Lucasfilm, Star Wars Episode 7 Due In 2015
Jason Levine writes "Disney will acquire Lucasfilm, including the Star Wars trilogy. Additionally, Star Wars: Episode 7 is due to be released in 2015, with more feature films on the way. George Lucas said, 'For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.'"

Wow
Hopefully 7 is better than the last 3. Lucas said he was never going to do another one. I guess he was right.

Disney/Marvel have Joss Whedon under contract through 2015. Just sayin'.
Can't wait for "Star Wars on Ice"
Another day closer to redwood heaven
He passed on the role of director to Irvin Kershner for the second film. He should have never returned to directing. Or casting. Or screenwriting.
Seems fitting as Disney has already picked up a few of the older ILM guys when they acquired Pixar.
Sorry, teleporters just kill you and then make a copy. A perfect, soul-less copy.
Disney's acquisition of Pixar, Marvel, and the Muppets just worked out so well before. Although, they could hardly do worse than Lucas has.
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!

Please tell me it's the Slashdot version of a Halloween prank!
You ever get that feeling where your brain breaks? On one hand finding Star Wars beyond George Lucas' ability to rape for profit overjoys me. On the other hand, Disney, the company known solely for overrunning intellectual property into the stone age is taking over.
What's your bet that the next movie will suck even more than the last three?
Two shops full of the best brains working under the same virtual roof. Might be interesting. Especially if we get writing/direction from someone other than George. Love ya, George, but hopefully the only wooden acting we'll see from now on will by Woody The Cowboy.
Don't disappoint your bird dog. Go to the range.
Ok I just flipped my opinion from "so what the Mayans are just issuing a calendar for the next year" to "oh noos signs of the apocalypse".
Emperor is dead. Vader comes back from the Dark Side and also dies. Luke & Leia know they're siblings.
Seriously, what's the plot going to be?
And even if it does, it's just going from dogshit to catshit so it's no big loss
Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin! Then again, it couldn't be worse than episodes 1 and 2.

If he had no other assets, Lucas is now the 91st richest man in America.
I'd sell out for that too.
Your ad here. Ask me how!
Obligatory: what could possibly go wrong? Surely they can't do worse than the first three episodes (heh), but I'm not holding my breath. My poor childhood memories... a dead horse that's constantly being beaten. Yeah, I know that the horse spits out dollars with each hit, but please stop hitting it... please.
Wasn't Disney near-bankrupt because of the rampant piracy on the Internet? And then Lucasfilm (Star Wars franchise is only a part of that, but in general it's mostly IP) being worth $4B in 2012 dollars? Who would have guessed...
So were the prequels, just for a different generation of children.
And now a new set of children can enjoy the next batch
Face it, the originals were decent, had some good effects but should hardly be remembered at all 35 years later.
At least Lucas won't be in charge anymore.
I won't even dignify this announcement by engaging rage mode. The damage is done already, there is nothing left for Disney to fuck up.
Disney's on the phone right now with J.J. for a Reboot.

Jedi's who are ruling the muther-phkin galaxy not realizing that one who will "bring balance to the force" would knock them down because at that time - it was out of balance - the GOOD side was winning!
And, Greedo shooting first?
These three things are a quick list to explain why an infant in a diaper scrawling on a wall with their own excrement could form a better Star Wars narrative than Lucas.
There is no try - there is only yawn.

Back in 1979 Disney produced a film called "The Black Hole". As a 10 year old I actually really liked the movie when I saw it back in the early 80s (on the newly-created Disney Channel of course), but it was considered one of Disney's biggest movie flops. It was pretty much a blatant rip-off of Star Wars, and was certainly an attempt to try and cash in on the huge popularity of Star Wars. The film had all the basic pieces - spaceships, laser guns, "ESP" kind of extrasensory stuff going on (aka The Force), and of course Robots.
So now, 33 years later, it looks like Disney finally got the real thing. The actual Star Wars franchise.
On a different note, I can't help but wonder if Lucas is in poor health. He always hated Hollywood, and despised studios having any control over his creative process. So for him to sell his own film company, which he built from scratch, to a major studio goes against everything he's said and done for decades.
Better known as 318230.
Could Disney do worse than the dreck that was episodes 1 to 3?
How can anyone not be pleased by this news? Any nerd I've ever interacted with had already written off any new Star Wars movies coming out of Lucasfilm. Even if the new movies are somehow worse than the prequel trilogy, it's not like we were expecting anything good. The only thing that could change my view of the franchise would be if Disney could breath some new life into it and make something worth watching.
What if...
Disney would fix the crap Lucas changed in the first movies back to they way they were and re-made Episodes I to III (especially getting rid of the crap acting by the two young Anakin Skywalker actors).
Then, maybe, I would see Episode VII.
I would have thought that /. would be overjoyed at this for all the bitching about how Lucas ruined Star Wars.
a re-imagining of the first three episodes (most recently made movies) that still haunt my every thought of a galaxy far away...
As disturbing as it is to think what could happen to the franchise, its far less disturbing knowing that jaded old Mr. Lucas wont be behind it. Episodes I-III were a mockery of film making and I really have to agree with Plinkett .
Thinking about it, I'm not even sure who I would trust to continue or re-imagine the series...maybe Peter Jackson?
What next? A sound track by Phil Collins?

In what way has Disney actually interfered with Marvel? I haven't noticed any substantive difference in the storylines. It was grim-and-gritty heroes fighting heroes in annual story arcs that will "change everything" before the acquisition, and it still is.
So they have someone else making episode 7, and you still hate it.
I understand that the issue is more complex than I'm painting it, but: I see those 2 positions as being a bit self-contradictory.
If you like something, you generally want more. At least if it's good. The fact that it's NOT Lucas should make this promising.

and here is my comment:
a sigh of "thank fuck" is breathed throughout the galaxy, but what can you do with an episode 7 that hasn't been already done in the myriad of books, comics, tv shows, etc? lucas has made pretty much the entirety of star wars toxic to me with those insipid changes and infecting others with this nonsensical bullshit.
And he still won't get an Oscar.
Maybe Disney can finally release the Blu ray version of the original trilogy? Getting Star Wars away from Lucas is a good thing. Now we just have to see if Disney is a good or bad thing - I'm hoping for good.
So does this mean we might finally get high-definition releases of the original Star Wars films without all of Lucas's later alterations?
Oh, Ackbar you old fool, now IS the time to strike (a deal).
Mickey Mouse and Luke Skywalker will both never leave copyright now. Ever.
I think the biggest problem with Disney getting their hands on Star Wars is the copyright issue. Lucas Film has always been really good about letting people parody Star Wars. There have been endless books, spoofs, homages and fan creations based around Star Wars. Disney is notorious for being dicks about, well everything, but definitely about copyright. If they take over Star Wars then I'm worried fan creations, spoofs and other expanded universe material will disappear under threat of legal action.
If they own the rights to Lucasfilm, this would also mean they own the Indiana Jones franchise. Also read someplace where Disney would neither confirm or deny they were planning to change Tomorrowland in their theme parks. Would be interesting if they ever decided to apply a "Cars Land" style revamp to Tomorrowland.
I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.
So you sold it to them?! Let me guess: Miley Cyrus will be playing a lead role... :p
Now that he's selling it, who cares what his original "vision" was for episodes 7 and beyond? Grand Admiral Thrawn is the obvious direction to take.
Disney is able to produce great movies, like the first "Pirates of the Caribbean", "The Avengers", and others. Any Star Wars movie without Mr. Lucas involved has to be greeted with great hope!
Kingdom Hearts.
On the other hand, I can't wait to see a Mickey Mouse jedi fight off with a Donald Duck sith lord.

Looking forward to hidden/subliminal mature content being embedded in future Star Wars movies.

I'm going to hold out foolish hope for a movie adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy.

For 35 years, George Lucas has permitted derivative fan-based works to thrive. He's a kid at heart who gains great personal pleasure from seeing so many people embrace his movies and characters.
Disney, on the other hand, is one of the ringleaders of the MPAA, pushing for crap like the DMCA and most noticeably the insane copyright extensions. They're infamous for cracking down on anyone who so much as fingerpaints mouse-ears on a poster of Obama without first licensing said use of mouse-ears. Under a Disney regime, I expect to see any post that so much as mentions a "light saber" as takedown fodder.
As far as extending the franchise, do you really want to watch "The Littlest Sith" or "Sleeping Jedi", or some other straight-to-DVD animated dreck?

Like they'll sell out more than Lucas?
Disney, please stop raping our childhoods.

This is the most exciting thing to happen to the franchise since the run of Episode 3 finally ended at the theatres. I still remember when I swore off paying a theatre ticket to see it, having been burned on the previous two, and then watched it on a borrowed DVD a year or so later. Money well saved. If anybody other than Lucas is involved, there is still hope.
While the rest of us 'tech geeks' just had an awesome nasty laugh over the pair-up.
All we need now is for Disney to suck up that other overrated franchise, Star Trek. Dare I say they'll combine them? Oh sweet revenge.
Sorry if you like them. Actually, I'm not sorry -- it's great you've got something you like a lot. It's just my-god-the-noise from those two megahits, for the rest of us who think they're just pretty bad cheese. It's like Enya to us. Enya that people won't shut up about. That's why we get prickly, is all.

Well, it looks like Jar Jar Binks has found employment again.
The good:
* New movie made with someone who has a fresher vision. By far the best of the three most recent Star Wars movies was not any of the movies, but the 1st "Clone Wars" which set everything up story-wise for Ep3. I would have loved to see all of the Star Wars movies made by the guys who did Clone Wars...
* Even better Star Wars related things at Disney World/Land, which was already doing pretty well with the revised Star Tours.
* I would say even more Star Wars toys, but - is that possible?
The (potentially) bad:
* Lucas has actually been really tolerant of fan made stuff like videos and other things. Will Disney retain this same level of tolerance? It seem unlikely.

Lets get this over with... Fuck Off
Honestly, I think all the geek scorn after the prequels came out broke him. He's not a young man and between Star Wars and Indiana Jones, I honestly think he believed his own hype as a genius film-maker. So in an act of total hubris, he decided to puke out the prequels. And they were awful. And he knows it but doesn't know *why*.
I think I'll choose to be optimistic. Look at all the Star Wars novels. It's a huge universe with lots of stories to tell. Disney easily has a lot of material to release a new movie every few years. Also, how it anything they make possibly be worse than Attack of the Clones?

I do love me some Star Wars, but I can't help but think that new films could ruin the legacy even more than episodes 1-3. :/
Hopefully they don't bastardize it too much.
But then I thought, with Lucas not directing, maybe a new Star Wars film would be watchable.

The first thought I had was: it couldn't be worse than those movies that will not be named. The second thought: How the hell can you make Episode 7 without any of the original actors?
Just in case Disney needs any inspiration on how to make Starwars worse, there was a discussion-thread on alternatehistory.com about how Star wars Episode 1 could have been made worse - http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=236784. Some of the suggestions are truly inspired. One of them being introducing some subtle racism and making Jar-Jar Binks a stereotypical black person who only talks in Jive. Also by not hiring John Williams to do the score, we'd end up with Jar-Jar's leitmotif being some early 20th century Jazz.
Lucas has basically said he's out of the movie business, or at least the big studio business, and I'm sure he's getting a helluva good buyout, so why not? His kids, grandkids, greatgrandkids and so forth will have more money than God, and I'm sure he made sure he and his heirs will continue to have a royalty stake.

Hang on there. They aren't currently selling them, but the "Theatrical Release" DVDs did come out for the first three movies. They come in a box with the tweaked versions on completely seperate DVDs. I own them.
There may have been changes to them, but saw the original Star Wars in theatres 7 times and watched the VHS to death and I couldn't spot any differences.

Now watch Dark Horse Comics, which has had the Star Wars comics license for ages, producing some of the best "extended universe" material in the franchise, helping to maintain the fanbase during the dark time between RotJ and TPM... get screwed out of it, because Disney has its own comics publisher (Marvel). That's what happened with Boom Comics, which was developing a rather good line of comics featuring Disney-owned characters, but lost it when Disney bought Marvel. In both cases, good small independent publishers got screwed by The Mouse.

How about we form an open-source space drama with open-source characters? Open-source projects usually have StarWars-like names anyhow. I was certain "Ogg Vorbis" was a StarWars character when I first heard it.

Maybe now Disney can remake the Variety Hour show!
Geroge Lucas is a whore and stole the entire concept of star wars from the Dune series. It's not even thinly veiled, and original drafts of the scripts even had the the princes smuggling "Aura spice" instead of weapons plans. The princess name in Dune was pronounced "a-leia" The producers of the Dune movie even tried to sue lucas for ripping off their costume ideas, which is rather clear he did when you compare the 2 films. The man hasn't had an orgional idea in his life, and the idea that he's now selling out to Disney, the originators of ripping off other peoples work and then repackaging and re-copyrighting it (Check with the brothers Grimm) is the ultimate in irony.
Empire Strikes Back was considered by many to be the best of the first three, due much to Irvin's abilities as a director. Shame that he's no longer with us to pick up the megaphone and bring some decency back to the franchise.

Well aside from the copyright nightmare, the silver lining could be that you can jump pit of sarnac, and see your friend's hot sister in a princess leia bikini.
I'd hope at least for the Thrawn (a.k.a. Heir to the Empire) trilogy by Timothy Zahn. He was an already established writer, and the "pilot program" that showed Lucas it was OK to let other writers into his pristine universe. Of course then Lucas realized he could make boat loads of cash and let any dingbat write a new trilogy--to the point where now Star Wars usually gets an entire rack in the bookstore, just like all that Star Trek rubbish, leaving just one rack for the real Sci Fi.

George lucas and disney are both tremendeous whores. They will sell and pimp their licenses out to any product in order to milk as much money as they can out of fans. They will put their products name on literally hundreds if not thousands of products, they will make shitty and poorly made video games over and over and over and over again, they will shill their movies with special/limited editions a dozen times over, they will bleed their customers dry with a constant barrage of their products to the point of obscurity.
Aside from darth mickey or yoda mickey showing up, what will really be the difference between lucas whoring out his products or disney whoring it out? They are both pimps that treat their licenses like cheap 5 dollar crack whores standing on MLK drives street corner at 3am.
I love the original trilogy in its original format. I have fond memories of the toys when I was a kid when the movies were new. There were a couple cool novels written. And there were a couple cool star wars games. Aside from that though I couldnt give a toss about star wars. Everything about star wars has sucked 100% for the past couple decades to the point where I dont have any interest or even care about it.
Maybe disney can rekindle star wars and make it good again, something lucas hasnt been able to do for oh like 25 years or so. Lucas is a apox on the star wars name, the man who HELPED create it (yeah he got the idea but others turned it into more) has utterly turned it to shit because he is a brainless one trick fat ass pony.
Im pretty sure all lucas's meetings go something like this.
"Hello mr lucas. I have a great idea for the star wars license, you see I want to..."
"Stop right there I dont care what your idea is. Give me 13 million dollars" /hands lucas 13 million dollars.
"Now go do whatever you want and get out of my sight and dont come back until you have 13 million more dollars. Oh and tell my secretary to alert the press, my cocain bucket is getting dry so Im going to re-release star wars for 154th time only this time I removed everyone in the movie and made them all ewoks and Im hungry so its time to fill my slop trough with 120lbs of bacon and cheese".

2 BILLION in cash? That must be a Calamari Cruiser full of bills! Don't these people have bank accounts? Whats the point of paying such a huge amount of money in cash? Does George intend to fill his house with money and perform some weirdo Scrooge McDuck impersonation?
"fuck no"? I know Lucas can be a bit of a putz, but this is definitely crossing over to the Dark Side.
"To stop the terrorists."
seeing that they will own the whole kit-n-kaboodle(right?), there is a good chance they will release the original versions. they are bigger whores than lucas and sales will be a sure thing.
...
There may be more to this than selling Star Wars. Lucas just became one of the biggest stockholders in Disney. There may be more behind the scenes than we realize. It may end up more of a merger like with Pixar.
The story line will be changed of course. There will be either a father or a mother but not both.
hehehe captcha "swirled" ROFLMAO
I can feel it.
As part of the vetting process, the directors of this new venture must endure the full seven and a half minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXcb7VPw59s
Imagine an approved/remastered release of The Star Wars Holiday Special, courtesy of Disney! They would most certainly make a sith-ton of money on that.
Anyone here would like to see a new trilogy with the story of Darth Raven and the old empire coming face to face together 4,000 years before the older movies? That would rock and would give something different based on SWTOR game.
At least I could hope right?

Star Wars has always been a Disney-Type of film in my mind. I never felt it was much above a 12-year-old (average 12-year-old that is). When I was a child, I didn't get around to seeing the first Star Wars until a couple of years after it first came out. I remember everyone being all crazy about it. Buying the toys, magazines, books, posters, etc. You'd have thought it was giving everyone orgasms. When I saw it for the first time, when I was around 10 or 12, I was totally unimpressed. I think it came out when I was about 8. I really don't understand the allure of Star Wars. It's pretty pathetic on everything except state-of-the-art (at the time) special effects.
Disney doing Star Wars? Does that mean we are getting singing and dancing during it? Or is it going to be about Star Wars High School? Tinkerbell is going to make an appearance?
Seriously, Star Wars was only good for 3 movies, the rest, well, suck dog shit. The last 3? Since I'm not expecting much, I probably won't be disappointed.
Be seeing you...
Does this finally mean we'll get a sequel to Howard The Duck?
I'm hanging out for Star Wars 13: Gungan Speech Therapy
Don't be apathetic. Procrastinate!
...can anyone who has a good quality VHS of the original, unfucked-up-with copies of Star Wars (Episodes 1 to 3 - note how I use the ORIGINAL number system, you dorks) please for the love of geekdom, upload to http://thepiratebay.se/ right now.
Slashdotters with original copies - you are our only hope!
Make him executive producer, creative consultant or whatever. But for fark's sake DO NOT LET HIM WRITE ANY DIALOGUE.
I read it as "Georges Lucas will stop rapping the Star Wars franchise." Honestly, whoever continues it, it can't be worse. Disney is the company who owns Marvel. They are not doing a too bad job I think.
The Wise adapts himself to the world. The Fool adapts the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the Fool.
There are few things sadder than old men who, decades later, still enjoy complaining about George Lucas, as if he betrayed their very childhood. Be a geek. But stop being such a damn dork. Star Wars and sequels were movies. Popcorn movies. Mostly for kids. They made a lot of money. Someone must have liked them. Not you. So what? Get over it.
Now if we can get new versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter to go with it.
Please, here, all of my mod points to you. This was exactly the same thought I had when I read the news.
The battle scenes made sense. How could that possibly be a Michael Bay film?
Kingdom of the Geriatric Ward, starring Harrison Ford. ...or just make it star his son instead. "Indiana Jones Episode 5"... or his father. "Episode 0".
NATHON FILLION AS HAN SOLO IS WHAT GOD WANTED TO HAPPEN. Also: Ryan Gosling as Luke Skywalker, Alison Brie as princess Leia, Christina Hendricks as Mara Jade? Agent Smith as Grand Admiral Thrawn? Michael Cera as Chewbacca? C'MON
lol, Lucasfilm being sold after Red Tails bombed!
It is my hope that all the genius that comes from the possible pooling of techniques from ILM and Pixar brings about a new age of photo realistic digital actors.
Harrison Ford looks too old? Carry Fisher is pushing morbidly obese? Mark Hamill looks like a middle aged mafioso? No problem - Full digital representations of all actors. That just leaves the voice acting, and we can have the trilogy that should have been made directly after the finish of filming on ROTJ.
One can dream, right?
Episode IV: Directed by Quentin Tarantino.
"That's not a moon....that's a mother fuckin space station!"
Not sure if referring to power outages from Sandy, or Star Wars XII by Disney.

intellectual property law is philosophically incoherent. it is your moral duty to ignore it or sabotage it
Oh yeah, how can I not be pleased. The most evil company in the world, who totally destroyed the Muppets, destroys anime every chance it gets and even does a hatchet job on its own products like Pirates of Auschwitz, WTF was that movie about? You think you go see a nice adventure movie, you get a scene that would have been censored out of Shindlers List. It could have been a Korean film for its going from light comedy to stuff even the Swedes need to sit down to digest in a movie.
As for merchandising the hell out of a movie, Disney invented that, they made some good serious movies but lets face it, Star Wars is going to get their cartoon treatment. Remember Pocahontas? Well, now imagine that being done to Star Wars. Not only won't Han Solo not shoot first, he won't shoot at all, the baddy will die (but not to visibly) by some hilarious accident created by his own stupidity possibly with the aid of a bumbling side-kick.
Star Wars was as popular as it was because it managed to steer a fine line between the "OMG, son, cover MY EYES" of PoftheC hardness and the total fluff of disney toons. You can't veer from it to far in either direction without loosing the Star Wars feeling.
Jar Jar Binks and the massacre of child jedi's shows this. Jar Jar Binks was to goofy and the massacre of kids so starkly shown removes ANY sympathy whatsoever you might feel for the "hero". Yes, the original Darth Vader blew up an entire planet which no doubt housed billions of kids some gutsy but cute orphans playing with a kitten BUT YOU DIDN'T SEE THIS. So DV was bad but not gobsmacking evil where the only character development you want to see is the character dying.
The movie "Pirates" with Walter Matthau had the same problem, the audience wanted a light hearted action movie, they got a dirty gritty pirate movie were the lead characters just ain't nice. Real pirates ain't nice and so neither was captain Red. You can argue whether Pirates is a good or bad movie but you can't argue is that this is not what the audience wanted.
Star Wars is light adventure, the heroes are heroes, the baddies are bad, one of the heroes gets the girl and everything is alright. THAT IS STAR WARS. Not to scary for kids, not to tame for adults. When people claim that of course you don't like the prequels, you grew up from being 6 years old... they forget. EVERYONE liked Star Wars. It wasn't a kid movie at the time of launch. Adults saw it too.
Some fans have retconned the series themselves. Handsup anyone who thought Boobie Fett was cool... DID YOU SEE THE SAME MOVIE? He is the classic bumbling side-kick to the baddie, he gets wiped in the first fight in seconds. Yes, he does capture the hero, the baddies side-kick always does this and then screws it up, you never watched cartoons before? Yet Bumble Fett is now in fanfiction and the extended universe some unstoppable killing machine equel to Vader. Except why would an equel be so easily threathened? Nah, retconning doesn't need logic.
This has created a view of Star Wars that is so varied, no new movie could possibly satisfy. It is the reason recent Star Wars games have no lived up to the potential of the license.
I severely doubt Disney will make anything worth watching out of all this. They will try to wrap a Star Wars skin around what they think sells right now. "Star Wars: Twilight" anyone? Moody Sith in high school? Don't think that someone at Evil HQ isn't writing a draft for it.

Bumbling Fett was a the baddies bumbling side-kick who as a plot device captures the hero through inexplicable means and then screws it up. Inexplicable bit, none of the Imperials asked WHY Boobie Fett wanted to be left behind drifting in space with the rest of their carbage? A smuggler has no detector for noticing another craft suddenly powering up at close range?
The extended universe made "killed in seconds by a blind smuggler" Fett into somekind of unstoppable killing machine... the same extended universe that turned action adventure into 30 something soap.

If there's anything that could bring more credibility to Star Wars, it's less control from Lucas. Now we might actually see the original trilogy released without all the special edition plastic muck. Or perhaps restored, but not ruined with added scenes and horrible modifications.
And since Lucas already ruined Star Wars with Episode I-III, I have absolutely nothing against further Episodes, especially since they likely won't let Lucas direct them.
Sure Disney is known for sanitising their products, but Star Wars has always been pretty clean. I am not worried about that. What does concern me, is that Disney will now control ILM and LucasArts, possibly affecting what projects ILM contribute to, and the contents of LucasArts' games.
Always in motion, the future is.
Hire Pixar to make the movie.
Problem solved.

Pixar is the one who produced the movies you talked about, not Disney. Pixar operates very independently from Disney, they demanded to. Pixar does not make Disney movies, it makes Pixar movies.
And the reason everyone sees the great Pixar movies as being the prime output of Disney animation? Because their own animation has lost all credibility.
And the point really isn't whether Disney can or cannot make movies, it is about whether they can make a Star Wars movie.
Yes, they can make the prequels, they proven that with Pirates of the Carribean. What didn't I like about the prequels? It went to wildly from slapstick to hard action (Jar Jar Binks and the killing of the Jedi children) same as the nasty scene with the hanged kids in PotC which just didn't find in what seemed at first to be a action-comedy Indiana Jones style movie.
Disney had problems with this before, light action movies that tried to seem hard to get the older teens by including nastiness which didn't fit.
The whole family movie, which what Star Wars was, is actually very hard to make. Something that EVERYONE in the family likes. Disney has made for a while some animated movies were as a parent you weren't totally hating every minute but few adults would see them if their kids didn't make them. Star Wars was something audiences of all ages, with and without kids, went to see. That is something I don't see Disney doing, for that matter, few have done it since.

The dutch "Spits" newspaper had it on the front page, under a headline with said "Hoaxing with Sandy"
So I thought it was a hoax example... and then it turned out it was no hoax.

Wow, 665 posts and counting! Did Obama and Romney get in a fistfight over using Linux or Windowss as a platform to study global warming?
(-1: Post disagrees with my already-settled worldview) is not a valid mod option.
Jar Jar: Yoosa tinking meesa gonna die?
C-3PO : Oh yes Jar Jar. That giant mouse and his mean spirited duck friend are going to kill you.
Senator Amadala : So this is how Jar Jar dies..... with thunderous applause.
Never again will I put a nickel toward the StarWars licensed products. DISNEY SUCKS and I'll have NOTHING to do with them. Sad to see it all get consolidated down to a handful of companies owning 99% of noteworthy names/products.
I can see 2 paths
Tim Burton will direct a Reboot of Star Wars
We will get:
Johnny Depp as the drunk space pirate Han Solo
Keith Richards will play Obi Wan - a Burnt out hermit former Jedi Knight
Helena Bonham Carter Tim Burtons Wife (Harry Potter- Bellatrix Lestrange, Queen from the New Alice in Wonderland)- She will be the new Princess Leia
Garrett Hedlund (Tron) - Luke Skywalker
Alan Rickman (professor Snape in Harry Potter) or Anderson Cooper (CNN) - C3PO
Terrence Howard (Iron Man 1 - Rhodey)- Lando Calrissian
Brad Garret (Everbody Loves Raymond) - Chewbaca
Jeff Bridges - Emperor Palpatine
Little Man from Jackass - Yoda & C3PO
Path 2:
Joss Whedon directs the new star wars and while his directing kicks ass it will get ruined by the casting which will be all the teenager actors popular with the teenagers playing leading roles such as the cast from Hunger Games, Twilight Saga etc... It will make tons of money but in the end become just another pop culture piece of crap tween movie.
EITHER THIS WILL BE AN EPIC DISASTER and we will all be wishing we were in a Galaxy Far Far Away....
Well, now that someone has pried Star Wars out of his very much still alive hands, should we be seeing the uneditted cuts of Star Wars in a form other than non-anamorphic DVD sometime in the near future?
Now starring Snow White, Cinderella and the Little Mermaid and the greatest villain in the galaxy: the evil witch! Guest appearances of Disney Cars as talking spaceships and Find Nemo cast as Admiral Ackbar close kins! Stay tune boys & girls!
"A good move, this is....."
I think Disney hired a hitman and put a gun to Lucas' head. Jar Jar Binks is going to have a wife and kids in the next episode....
And Fanboys are going to kill themselves en masse when one of the kids becomes a Jedi. WATCH!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4_dZPVg8KI (Darth Vader...)
Nothing meaningful has happened in the Star Wars universe or its characters since Return of the Jedi. Thank God, now the franchise can be put to good use. And, before you say anything; the novels and comics and kids books and lunch boxes and video games - ALL filler until the prequels (which were aweful).
To acquire the rights to Howard the Duck!
Oliver's law of assumed responsibility: If you're seen fixing it, you will be blamed for breaking it.
So, without George involved, maybe a watchable Star Wars film could be made.
On the other hand, having seen John Carter, (I was drunk; it didn't help...) I may have to rethink that.
Oliver's law of assumed responsibility: If you're seen fixing it, you will be blamed for breaking it.
Maybe the mouse house is doing this to get their hands on ILM and Skywalker Sound. We all know they're about the money and I'm betting those two generate quite a lot. Maybe new Star Wars movies were a condition of the deal, not the reason for it.
After the horror that was the three prequel movies hopefully George Lucas won't be directing this new one.
This is all in line with Disney's standard operating procedure. Take a series that has reached the end of its watchable life, then make a bunch more movies to everyone's dismay. Pirates of the Caribbean, anyone? The first was fine, the rest were painful.
You mean that Korean pillock who, twelve months from now, if there's any justice, will be asking if you want fries with that?
Confucius say, "Find worm in apple - bad. Find half a worm - worse."
Now you will tell me there is going to be an attraction on Disneyland and Disney World that will fly you to Endor on a spaceship, and will sell you Star Wars souvenirs at its exit.
Wait... did that happen already? No way!
Well, then maybe this is their opportunity to create a SW theme park. We'll have Leia and Chewbacca characters walking around the park, R2D2 wastebaskets, you name it.

Now it is right where it belongs. Who cares?
The saddest part in Star Wars VII is when Bambi's mother turns to the dark side!
Sure enough, the cow costume was hanging up next to the superhero outfit and sailors uniform. (S,Spud)
As long as Disney lets Han shoot first, it was worth the $4 billion!
