  1. Re:Here is how you help. on LinuxWorld Editorial Machinations · · Score: 0

I just took down a list of the advertisement's email addresses, and sent this form letter to them, I encourage anyone with 5 minutes and a belief in journalistic ethics to do the same. Just send:

I am writing to ask about your advertisements at http://linuxbusinessnews.sys-con.com/>. One is currently running at the top of an article by Maureen O'Gara at http://linuxbusinessnews.sys-con.com/read/83267.ht m>, and I would like to know if you support her lack of journalistic ethics. In this article, she attempts to intimidate an opposing journalist by including her current and recent addresses, phone numbers, and pictures of said addresses. I am disgusted by the article, and can not believe that $COMPANY would knowingly support such trash. Does $COMPANY support Mrs. O'Gara and her lack of journalistic integrity?

  2. Uber-weenie suits expect too much on Cable HDTV Not Ready For Primetime? · · Score: 0

Blame TimeWarner for disabling DVI and not building the right infrastructure. HDTV over cable is done perfectly well for me using Comcast and the new Motorola 6800 box. It all depends on your cable company's decisions when it comes to recompressing/remuxing the real HD feeds, and having the channelspace (Something like 3 standard "channels" needed for 1 HD channel) to not cut corners.

The lag in channel changing is also nothing new as things turn digital, just like your ReplayTV or Tivo, and the guide style of navigating instead of blind channel flipping makes it a non-issue. The aspect adjustments are a function of your box, the only lag on my Motorola one is when you switch between HDTV and standard tv channels, and it goes from 1080i to 480p. When you change ascept and the TV, it takes less than second, and this is a $800 refurb rear projection set.

For less than $1000, you could but a 46" HDTV and a cheap all-in-one progressive scan DVD/receiver. Add digital cable with support for HDTV, and use digital connections from the box (DVI and TOSlink), and you are set. When you spend a crapload of money for something like this guy, you are gonna have some pretty unrealistic expectations.

  3. Braces are bad on Keyboarding Love Or Keyboarding Pain · · Score: 1, Informative

I just stopped wearing a wrist brace to protect my thumb after a motorcycle accident (and no, airbags wouldn't have done much for me), but all it seemed to do is force my wrist straight at the expense of the rest of my body. Some decent form and posture seems like a much better way to help yourself.

  4. Software Engineering Example on Uprated "10-ton" Ariane 5 Fails · · Score: 1, Interesting

The first Ariane 5 was apparently just a quick job mostly made of stripped Ariane 4 parts and poorly designed software. It was used a lot in an old Computers, Ethics, and Social Values text as well as a Software Engineering one, each time as an example of what not to do. The way the texts described its failures and the failure of the process behind its design, Im suprised ANY of the later revisions worked at all.

  5. Kinda Like Cringley Says on Latest Salvos in the Ongoing Battle Of Webcasting · · Score: -1

Everyone with an idle workstation at home and bandwidth to spare should setup a shoutcast server with just a single cd as the playlist, and email the URL to a bunch of people, encouraging them to do the same. Hope a Fwd: storm ensues and that you get people to realize that internet radio exists, and try to include enough "influential" people in the forwards that some media coverage is generated and information can reach more people.
