this is exactly what I was referring to.
Unless this unit (or at least the radio station version of it (rack mount)) comes with a external display + mouse + keyboard so that you can roll your own playlists for it, it's going to be rather difficult to use.
And no, I don't think ANYONE has that much time on their hands to sit in front of a one-line LCD display picking music for a playlist. 80gb of storage definitely requires a external monitor + keyboard to be able to make some sense out of all the music.
Or how about this, make it run Linux (maybe it does already?) then you can ssh into it, and make all playlists with vi! Then on the one-line display you only pick from say, 40 playlists instead of 40000 songs. All the playlists could be stored in a separate directory, as plain text (m3u or something), and LCD display can be switched between songs/playlists mode. Hopefully this kind of functionality is already present in this unit in one way or another.

Is how do you navigate through 80gb of content? Sometimes you just want to listen to whatever music in the background while you work, or whatever, and its a lot easier to throw in a tape or cd that you know has something you like. Unless these players with > 2gb of storage come with *extremely* sophisticated playlist management where you can store and recall a large number of customized playlists, their value for casual listening is rather low. Of course added benefit on this unit is you probably only have to copy the music once and just leave it away from computers...
How can it use "new" code, if there was never any "old" code?
The divx "codec" was/is something along the lines of a hexedited microsoft mpeg4 encoder dll that allowed encoding at > 320x200 size and at higher bitrates.
I would hardly call that "innovation". Take someone else's code, change a couple bits, and call it your own.
Actually, no, I am not.
There is not a single commercially available (=legal) DivX player available.
I cannot download one from Microsoft, Intel, or any other software company that I can trust.
When I can purchase a DivX player at the store or download the codec from a respectable software company, then I will consider using it.
Most of the video coverage available for this from unofficial sites uses DivX video encoder.
It's extremely sad to see that such important content is made unavailable for people who do not wish to install pirated software on their machines.
I hope America will grow up and stop supporting illegal software.
for those with ieee1394 devices (in particular, DV cameras), keep in mind that due to recent "updates" to the 1394 driver things stopped working. specifically, there are issues in video1394 driver, which cause a kernel oops when using "dvconnect" program to read/send raw data to the camera. On the other hand there has been some restructuring in the 1394 code and now it at least seems to detect device insertion/removal and runs a kernel thread NodeMngr for this purpose...
anyway, hopefully 1394 stuff will be fixed by the next release (sending dv data didn't work in 2.4.6 + patches from linux1394.sourceforge.net)
The syntax looks rather weird, its dependency on strangeNamedAndUpperAndLowerCaseFunctions makes you unnecessary work on the Shift key... It has no real language features such as pointers, structs, typedefs, etc...
It only has one variable type (no ints/chars/whatever)... Seems like its missing all the bitops as well. Strange, off the wall language that will probably not be used much. If I wanted something for a quick script I'd use perl or shell script or even php instead of this.
And gosh, why does every post that says something positive about Microsoft *immediately* gets moderated down as Troll?
I am surprised why I still waste my time here.
Why is it that every Slashdot article posted related to microsoft always talks about how they are stomping on our rights, choking innovation, killing off Linux, etc etc. Perhaps its "cool" to bash Microsoft these days but do you people actually USE some of Microsoft products? Their office suite cannot be matched by anything available for Linux in stability, user-friendliness, and many other factors. Remember, for most people cross-platform means it runs on Windows and Mac, and they could care less about other things. So stop bashing and start using Microsoft software because believe me, they are NOT going away anytime soon. And if you really want to make Linux software as usable as Microsoft one, Linux UI designers might want to check out http://msdn.microsoft.com/UI.
I have a old ppro200 server which uses MrBios, and it takes approximately 0.5 seconds to go through post and start booting. Linux kernel takes another few seconds. This is not much of an improvement. Most BIOS's that come with new computers these days are too slow and show a lot of crap during post, which can't be disabled. Check out www.mrbios.com, they make replacement bioses for a lot of different motherboards, and they usually have a lot more options to tune for a particular chipset, etc
I am very impressed by this decision made by the courts. Contrary to popular belief, we do not as humans have the right to do anything we like. Humanity has a responsiblity to regulate itself. Sure, we can physically do anything we like. Look, however, where that has previously gotten societies:
the romans, killed people for sport, society collapsed
the babylonians, killed children as a part of worship, society collapsed
So where are we now, we are a society that kills babies because we care a little too much about our personal "right to choose" (abortion), we neglect our children because we are too busy with our careers and other things, and so on.
And now, the court makes a wise decision about what should and should not be done with federal funds and we have a problem? Let me make the following points:
This does not restrict proper research, etc, from occurring as anything my be viewed when appropriate permission is acquired.
If this was about federal money being used for some Christian cause, we would here a much different story.
Frankly, I am disappointed that more Slashdotters do not have the wisdom to recognize a good thing.
I continually find it hard to believe that scientists put such faith in evolution. The entire theory of evolution, natural selection, the big bang, etc, has so many holes in it that, if it were about any other topic then the origin of life and humanity, it would be laughed out of scientific circles. Among these problems include:
a fossil which simply does not contain the evidence that should be there if evolution were true
proof based on studies, such as the old "moth on the tree" that were baseless and without truth
It just doesn't fit. And I am a Christian. Unlike another Christian who posted here, I DO take the biblical account of creation literally. I think scripture calls to do nothing else.
When it all comes down to it, Creationism involves no more faith then Evolution. Both require that you believe in things for which there is no physical proof.
This is rediculous. I am just one of a WHOLE LOT OF slashdot readers who got screwed during the whole Redhat IPO because of the exact same thing. This article definately was relevent!

Hey, since Katz can do it so can I. I now pronounce today Call-Your-Movie-Theatre Day.
Tell them what you think, but by all means do NOT just follow the ravings of Katz. If you (like me) feel that the movie theatre's are actually right to not allow kids into these shows and the like, call them and tell them you agree!
If you want to get your kids into these shows without you, call and complain.
Whatever you do, don't try to fix the system by lying, cheating, stealing, or getting yourself arrested (or sued) by sneaking someone elses kid into the theatre to see soemthing they are really to young to see.
And on the side: Anyone interested in setting up a Christian version of Slashdot? Email me thomppj@okstate.edu. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
I am not sure quite how to respond to a story like this... You see, I happen to be a part of a minority (?) group of Slashdot readers who actually think that such moral limitations and the so on are actually worthwhile. I think the real problem I see here is on the part of the author and the mother. First off, the author. I am amazed that the author of this story can turn himself into a hero by lying and cheating. Now, I am sure that you can come up with all kinds of reasons to tell me all that doesn't matter - they can already get it off the web, nobody was getting hurt, yada yada yada. The truth of the matter is this: IT WAS WRONG. It was a lie and an embarrassment to the concept of freedom which you chose to abuse on that day. Shame on you. And to the mother. That a woman when even consider to take her children to such a show is an embarrassment to the word mother. "Mom" is a word which represents a caring, nuturing class of women who have the BEST interest of the children in mind. Come on, figure it out here, people. How can anyone ignore the crud that comes out of South Park. As a Christian in this nation I say enough is enough. I don't want to see the people on the fringe of society et abused whenever something like Columbine happens. I do, however, want to see americans start standing up for a little decency and the like. And about the "Ten Commandments" comment in the first part of your story - give me a break. Our country is closer now to "religious discrimination" then in ever has been - but only in the context of restricting prayer in school and the like. I'd say more, but I don't have the time. Other Christian Slashdot readers: SPEAK UP! Don't fight with me over ANY of the little details in my post here and just band together to raise the voice that we DO HAVE. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
I know that I cannot be the only one out there who agrees with her, at least for what I have heard so far. While I do not consider myself to be an extremist, I do think that the pornography available on the internet is ridiculous and I am proud of a presidential candidate who is willing to step out and say something. Yeah, unfortunately I don't know if she even has much of a chance of getting elected.
I am praying, however, that we will finally get a president elected who will bring some concept of integrity and morality into the Whitehouse.
I know that there are other Christian Slashdot readers out there. Speak out and say something. Don't let yourself be the silent minority.
