Who in their right mind would build a business off of Amazon's Associate program? You wind up being an unpaid saleperson for Amazon without any employment rights or protection. And for a very paltry commission, no less.
> "I was stunned because I didn't know that the character map existed -- and I have a PhD."
Sheesh. Someone goes through graduate school, accumulates enough schooling to collect a PhD, and suddenly they think they know "EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING".
Seems like his PhD program missed out on teaching him humility.
Who's to say that their ingenuity wasn't spent doing something worthwhile? They had a blast, I bet, they overcame technical problems, and they learned a lot. And, they furthered the knowledge and realm of possiblility. (Who would have thought that a C=64 could handle a/. load?!?)
Now, if you were talking about the millions of dollars that goes into sports every year that could have been going to something worthwhile, I would agree with you.

After the atrocitizes performed upon the poor HD, I hardly think that the lack of Scotch tape around the sides of the HD is going to make much of the difference!
Digital actors still need a voice actor to show up to record their lines. However, it won't be long before you can take sound clips from the actors and string them together convincingly to produces lines.
www.dictionaraoke.org (mirror: dictionaraoke.mirrors.gweep.net) has songs that people have painstakingly put together using talking dictionary sound clips.

Bah. If my wallet was stolen, my immediate concern wouldn't be the couple of twenty dollar bills I had in there, it would be the credit cards and ATM card in there. Even if we weren't plunking down currency to buy stuff in stores, people would find a way to steal money from you.
I enjoy the convenience of online payments, but I like to remember that money represents the bit of life I've spent working in exchange for the spiffy gadget or the fine meal that I want. The stronger the relationship between what I buy and the work I had to do to afford that purchase, the less likely I am to spend foolishly. And I think physical money keeps that relationship strong.
My Garmin Summit GPS can chew through two fresh AA batteries in less than 24 hours. I hardly think that adding a GPS receiver to a cell phone can improve overall battery life.
And again, cellular signal reception is usually much much better than GPS signal reception in most places.
A better idea might be to enhance GPS receivers to use cellular signals to triangulate their positions and improve on their performance, but that's a different discussion.
Hastily written code that's intended to be only a "temporary" fix never seems to be replaced with working code. The problem is that the "temporary" code isn't visibly different from more permanent code.
The building analogy is that anyone can spot a poorly put together shack, as opposed to a carefully poured concrete foundation. Not so easy with code.
That's if you only used one processor to render. Slap a render farm together with a fast frame queueing stack, and you can do real time Render 'n' Watch (tm)
I love this program too. It's small, and doesn't need to be installed to run.
Very happy.

Personally, I think that if judges are allowed to give Cruel & Unusual punishments, we'd have fewer crimes and fewer people in jail.
