You are missing my point. Simple interfaces to complex systems are a BAD thing.
Making it easy to do complicated things means that more people will do them. And those people will by definition be stupider.
I'd rather have my DNS zone file edited in vi by a bearded unix/networking guru who knew what was going on under the covers, than have a 21-year-old fresh out of college be let loose with a Microsoft gui which allows him to "update YOUR zone files Quickly and Easily in Minutes with DNS Wizard"
would you really feel comfortable letting Grandma use it?
The problem is, that Grandma herself is comfortable attempting to configure DNS because she can point and click. She has no idea of the implications of clicking 'OK' in contexts other than home use.
If she had to put a bit of effort in (say firing up 'vim') she might not bother, and hey-presto one less f**ed-up zonefile.
Life was so much easier for us techies when computers were "difficult" to use. The advent of point-and-drool gui interfaces has made our life hell. Typical example of this being the brain-dead point-and-click admin of complex systems such as DNS.
The world would be a better place if GUIs had never been invented.
Give me an Xterm, emacs and lynx over a point-and-slobber interface anyday.

Because this is slashdot - where facts are trolls and trolls are facts.
I mean, does anyone _really_ need wireless, or is it just that geeks will do anything to complicate matters, so that ordinary folks never get a chance to catch up ?
Whenever I speak to anyone in the IT industry, they always try and confuse me with technological terms like 802.11b and 'bluetooth'. Did consumers ask for wireless access ? Is there ANY evidence at all that this is a good thing ? What about the dangerous levels of radiation that are involved with high frequency data transmission ?

I suppose I should be used to it by now. Where Linux and Free Software are concerned Slashdot disengages its brain.

You have to wonder whether support from IBM is a Good Thing (tm). Consider that IBM used to be the computing world's most hated corporation (before the advent of Micro$oft).
IBM threw the PC market down the drain by licensing its OS to third parties. Who is to say that they won't do exactly the same thing with Linux ? Suppose they spend all that cash improving Linux, and then some other corporation comes along and takes that work and packages it up in an ISO image and sells it for next to nothing like cheapbytes did to Redhat ?
IBM has also got a somewhat questionable reputation for Naziism, and apparently some of the computers used to facilitate the Holocaust were supplied by IBM. Open Source software has enough trouble with Stallman the Communist without people associating it with Naziism as well! Imagine the scene: You try and install Linux on your mom's PC. She looks at you in horror "I don't want any Nazi/Commie operating system on my PC. Re-Install W2k this instant!!!
Yeah. I can see it now. Linux == Nazism == Communism.
Do we as a community really want this man speaking on our behalf ?
What are his credentials anyway ? Has he contributed much to the world of open source ? (Apart from the ghastly fetchmail?)
Who appointed him as our spokesperson ?
Is it not time he took some lessons in marketing and tidied up his act ? At least losing that disgusting moustache would be a start.
By the way Eric, if your reading this, don't even think about coming round and shooting me, as I have several firearms, including but not limited to glock, Mac-10, H&K MP5, Spaz, Tec, Armalite and many many more. I will not hesitate to defend myself. Pre-emptively if necessary.
While OpenGL is very cool for things like advanced 3d design, and modelling and the like, today's fast paced games do not require its generality, or its ivory-tower purism.
The modern games developer will use DirectX over OpenGL every time. Incidentally, the incredibly poor support for DirectX in Linux is one of the reasons it is failing in the games market.
The engineer who installed my DSL connection claimed there is a better technology in the pipeline called the 'ATM - Asynchronous Transfer Mode'. This is faster than DSL because it is a synchrounous system based on 53 byte cell switching. He explained that speeds of upto OC3 (200TB/sec) and above are possible with ATM, and it is even faster than the current fastest network - Synchronous Digital Highway (SDH).
So, for what its worth, as with PCs, it seems that if you wait a year, your performance will treble for the same money. So Moore's law applies to telcoms as well as PCs !
It is obvious to anyone that if you spend a lot of time in an environment jam-packed with simulated violence (e.g. Quake III arena), then some of that will rub off in real life.
It is no wonder that America has turned into a violent hell-hole, given our predeliction for guns and pornographically violent video games.
Well, the BSD licence forces you to release your code to the likes of microsoft who can take it, and use it for whatever they like, without merging the changes back. Which means that Microsoft could 'co-opt' code written under BSD license without giving anything back to the community. Suppose they took an implementation of protocol that was popular say the bsd tcp/ip stack and added MS extentions. Hey presto they have used your BSD code to screw you over and you have no more control!!!
Can you see now how the BSD license is restrictive ?
Not a troll at all. The BSD license forces you to make your code available to all and sundry. The GPL and LGPL are less restrictive, since they allow you to remain free of commercial exploitation. Also, the BSD license is viral, and has a worm-like nature.
Had I been trolling, I would have said something like "linux sux my w2k box has been up for 1 year rock solid"
This is why Fleischman and Pons were ridiculed for Cold Fusion. They weren't physicists.
Interesingly enough, cold fusion has been reproduced in many labs. So go figure.
From an 'open source' perspective. Debian is the only GNU/Linux distro that adheres to RMS's definition of 'open source'. While Mandrake, and Redhat (based on Mandrake) are not open source, but are the more restrictive 'free software' as defined by Eric Raymond and Bruse Perens 'Open Software Definition'.
If you believe in freedom, you are better off going the debian route, since that way you are ensured that your distro is 100% Open Source, whereas with mandrake, it is all 'free software', but some of it may be released under the highly restrictive BSD license which RMS has criticised in the past, since it allows huge corporations such as Microsoft to profit at the expense of open source developers.
