Well, I have to agree, Since microsoft have effectively done the right thing, and put SOAP and XML into the w2k kernal, it is easy to see why SOAP will win in the marketplace.
Of course I realise this is slashdot, and pandering to the marketroids is tantamount to heresy, but it needs to be said.
For this XML-RPC effort to succeed, it needs to be implemented as a kernel-loadable module, and be included in the default Linux kernal.
Then and only then will Linux be fully riding the XML bandwagon

You simply version your interface. Or are you too stupid ? Its a well documented technique. VB developers have been using it for years. This problem is not restricted to CORBA.

Although the numbers do not add up it looks like this might be a way forward for Napster, and yet another example of how the internet breaks down conventional business models.

Lets face it, RPC has been done to death. Jesus, it was old in 1991 when I did my masters, it is positivly rotting in the grave now. What about causally-ordered multicast (like the ISIS system) or Tuple spaces like Dave Gelernters Linda system. RPC is an INADEQUATE model for distributed systems, and is holding us back.
XML is just the industry's latest snake-oil.
As for SOAP ? What a crock of s**t. CORBA did it better, and is an open standard.

I cannot help feeling that with all the 31337 overclocking going on here, we are losing sight of the real reason we have a computer on our desktops - to perform productive work for our bosses.
Its all very well having a 1600GHz Athlon on your desk, but what use it it if Windows crashes every five minutes because you are overheating ? Is it just me or does anyone else agree that we should really confine ourselves to running our CPUs at the speed they were designed for rather than some arbitary speed we choose ?

I am deadly serious. What passes for art culture and entertainment these days staggers me. The idea that someone anesthetiseing someone, cutting the top of their skull off, and eating it while they are still alive disgusts me. I am amazed that this was allowed past the censors. Even if as Americans we have the right to watch this kind of stuff, the fact that it is being pushed as mass entertainment saddens me, and I think it can only cause us to become desensitized to violence.
I understand it will not affect everyone the same way, but over time it is like water on a rock. Would you want your 16-year old kid to watch this ? I certainly would not.
No, dressing in a fascist manner indicates an unhealthy attidude to authority. And some people (particularly on slashdot) take movies a bit too seriously. I'd guess that it would be mainly right-wingers who would enjoy dressing up as stormtroopers.

As a one-time avid mac fan, I think Apple reached its technical peak with the Mac IIcx series, and System 7. Up until then, the mac had a really consistent user interface, and look and feel which was due (in my opinion) to the almost facist-like control Apple had over their API.
Anyone who ever wrote a mac application in the 80s or early 90s will tell you, their style guidelines made it IMPOSSIBLE to write an inconsistant gui. (unlike X11, and to a lesser extent Windows9X).
But what must remain the alltime best OS ever, the 'Holy Grail' that both open source zealots and capitalistic monopolists alike have yet to achieve was reached by Apple with A/UX 3.0.
Here was an OS that combined the ease-of-use of a a mac (brain dead point and click) with the powerful sophisitcation of a full blown UNIX implementation. It was quite simply a technical tour-de-force that has not been equalled to this day.
Apple now realise this is the way forward, and hopefully with darwin/OS10 whatever they have found the path they so sadly lost in the early 90s.
I for one look forward to the resurgence of easy-to-use Unix with the power of a Mac GUI.

I have three suggestions that would improve things over night, and move America from being the laughing stock of the world, back to being a force to be reckoned with.
1) Immediate outlaw of ALL guns in civilian hands. There is simply NO reason WHATSOEVER for a civilian to own a machine whose sole purpose is to kill.
2) First amendment to be repealed. Free speech these days seems to cover porn, and hate-speech. Not what our foundling fathers had in mind I am sure.
3) A 10pm Curfew for all people under the age of 18. This is common sense. No person of school-age has any reason to be on the streets at this time of night.
These simple measures could set us back on track to being the #1 nation, a title which these days seems increasingly to belong to the enlightened countries of Europe.
Can you imagine trying to sell that to a big Wall St Investment Bank ? I'm sorry, but our database system might or might not record your $100 million currency swap deal with the Bank of Japan.
Why does open source always have to mean second best ? At work I try and advocate free software wherever I get the chance, but jokes like MySQL do our movement no favors whatsoever.
