Before going into implementing new features, I'd prefer if they made ReiserFS rock solid first.
At the moment, and after hearing recent scary stories about problems with ReiserFS (but I personnally haven't ever had any big trouble), I switched to XFS and enjoy it just as much.
I also find SGI much more quick at getting things stable and finished, which is fairly important IMHO.
This is true, but I suppose the reason why people don't really notice this is because with Macintosh, the Hardware is bundled with the software (or the other way around, whatever).
When you buy a PC, you were used to have all the network apps (Netscape etc.) come with the modem you chose, the CD burning software come with the CD burner device and so on. With Macs, both the hardware and the software are from Apple, so bundling is "transparent" and has always existed.
Red Carpet seems quite interesting... as soon as the Ximian ftp lets me in or if I find a mirror that already has it, I'll try it:-)
I have one simple question though:
This "updater" will update all the Ximian Gnome part of the system (to replace the Helix updater) but also the core of the distribution (Debian users won't be much affected, but RedHat users like me will)... but can it manage other groups of packages???
I'm asking this because I maintain many useful custom RedHat 7 RPMs people really seem to like available from http://redhat.aldil.org/ and it would be great if I could (and others that trust me too of course) put my public GPG key into my Red Carpet and manage all my custom RPMs from it. I'm ready to make xml files describing my packages on my server (if that's how it works) etc. to get things working.
Does anyone know if this would/will be possible? I would be soooo pleased if it was:-)
You're trying to install an RPM v4 package on a system which supports only v3 and earlier.
This is most likely a RedHat 7 package and you are running 6.x I suppose...

Hey! I've been playing DVDs for months!

I use xine since the early 0.3.x releases and it works really well! I can get a perfect fullscreen playback at 1280x960 (thanks xv!) with a NVidia GeForce 2 MX on a P3 550. The latest version now supports subtitles and changing audio tracks on the fly (earlier versions started supporting IFO parsing, very useful too)... everything I need!
There's even an "unofficial" input plugin to play encrypted DVDs which works perfectly.
I really love this piece of software, it's wonderful:-)
BTW, RedHat 7 users can get a clean custom packaged version from http://redhat.aldil.org/ and play all their DVDs in no time!
It's not "openssf", it's just "ssf"!
It's a legally-use-it-in-france hack of ssh1 that can not exceed 128 bits encryption and that you need to be registered to use... and in a french company, this is the only flavor of ssh you legally have the right to use.
I really hope this will change soon since it has numerous known security flaws, but the governement doesn't really seem to care.
Well, this not happening is a *really* good thing.
But since last week, we (french) already have something like 3FF (about 50 cents) tax per blank CD... for me who only burns Linux & BSD distros, this almost doubles the price of my CDs:-( and all that extra money goes mainly to music companies and producers...
Aaaahhh french laws... did I mention we're still not supposed to even *use* openssh?
RedHat 7.0 users will probably find this useful : I've built a patched version of the "initscripts" package that includes tests to display the services startup messages with the Linux Progress Patch (of course, you can still use a non-patched kernel without any problems).
My scripts are available in the official packages, but you can grab an updated RPM (easier and cleaner to install) from my website in the "initscripts-lpp" directory:

I've posted my comments (for what they're worth) on the first few arguments here

I feel really sad for all the poor retailers that believe all this nonsense...

How about "Helix Shell"?
From what I understood it's a name much too common to have any legal hassles with it and people are so confused already
Guinness and Fisher are both european beers
Free speech and free beer, they did it!

A link to this RPM should soon be on the new official website (lpp.freelords.org) anyway.

Isn't this exactly what Mosix is all about? Dumb cpu time clustering for threaded applications?
Some day, I'll try it so I know, I promise
Wow, this all-in-one combo sounds pretty much like my own computer :-)
Oops, no : I can also read DivX ;-)
What's the point of re-compressing a compressed .tar.gz archive? ;-))))))
A binary would work better
