The only games I've played with more atmosphere were the Tex Murphy adventure games from Access (which has, regretably been assimilated by M$).
There were times when I was extremely tempted to use Max Payne's cheat mode simply out of eagerness to find out what happens next in the story.
If you're looking a shooter with cinematic feel to spare, Max Payne might be able to tide you over until Doom III sees the light of day.

For those of you with no *nix talent whatsoever could try the solution I found:
I have a P-90 with 48 MB RAM and a 4GB hdd running *gasp* Windows 98se (my wife runs Caldera, so we had an extra license). Connect the DSL modem to the hub, set up Internet Connection sharing and *poof* instant psuedo-router.
The cons are it is probably less than secure, needs to be rebooted every month or two, and sucks up power like you wouldn't believe, but if your budget and *nix talent are on the low side, it might be the solution for you.
Interesting side note: I've seen the damn thing keep routing for weeks after the GUI has locked up.
Well Bogatyr is partially right; they are H&K pistols, but they are chambered for 9mm, not.45. I saw an extreme closeup in the "Tomb Raider Tech Manual" (what can I say, I was bored).
What I find most amusing is the... thingy that the studio stuck to the front of the muzzle. If that's supposed to be some sort of recoil compensator, it's on upside-down - it would increase muzzle jump, and shoot (pardon the pun) one's accuracy to hell.
Am I the only one just a LITTLE freaked out by DARPA working on our "last, best hope for peace." Kinda wouldn't be in their best interest...
