I recently had a P4 1.4Ghz with 256megs of RDRAM. I fried that processor. How, you ask? By breaking the fan clips and seeing if it would boot without a fan on. (It doesn't, dont run a proc without a fan or other cooling solution, unless u want to waste money).
Anyway, i had to buy a new Motherboard, Proc, but not ram. However, i was sufficiently impressed with the new Athlon XP line. (especially the low cost of the XP 1600+).
Basically, i ended up updating my system to an AMD Athlon XP 1600+, Abit KG7-Raid MoBo, and with 256megs of Crucial PC2100 DDR Sdram at 266mhz. This machine SCREAMS compared to my P4 with DDR, and the processor is the exact same clock frequency. RDRAM is faster in benchmarks, but for me, the price vs. performance for the AMD was unquestionable around christmas time and now i'd think twice about getting an AMD vs. Intel if Intel supports DDR.
p.s. I know RDRAM is faster, but my DDR just seems more stable and more responsive, just me, who knows.
Have a good one,
AJ
My Suggestion to you is to just plain wait. Since its your home, data backup should not be critical, yet.
I am willing to bet that 18months down the line u can pick up a DVD-RW for $300 and 8.5gig Double Sided DVD's for about $5/piece. I would say that unless the data is absolutely critical, wait. However, your cheapest and easiest bet (i think) would be a large firewire 200GIG Raid array (yes they make them. check MacMall (they should work for PC's too).
Good Luck, and if u read this let me know what you use and send me an email, i'd be interested in this myself a few months down the line.

This sharp PDA is an excellent idea, but it is just another PDA being relased to the general population, and PDA sales aren't skyrocketing by any means. I think it will just be absorbed like a lot of ther good ideas these days.

These ads do what they need to - advertise. If they would lose the sound, i deffinetly feel these ads would be the next best thing (as long as they didnt get to lengthy). I like them better then annoying popups anyway,

Hopefully lasers will also be able to detect errors in our own ammunitions so that no more innocent Americans lose their lifes as those did today in Afghanistan from that missile error.

If there was no previous reference to this village in all of Italian literature/history then one could guess that this may be the lost city of atlantis?
For me, Atlantis has always been one of the most amazing tails ever told and i hope someday our "advanced" civilization solves the mystery!
Heres to hopin!

When technology such as this exists why do companies not develop with it? Do they feel that they should save it down the road? No! Dont! Your slowing the progress of humanity. Imagine a chip six times faster then today's chips running at the same power for the same price? 12ghz! Imagine the computational power that would be available using the same resources we have today. Why waste the future companies, go with inovation, in this case it would of been worth it!

Personally, I would love to have one Card in my wallet that was my Driver's License, Credit Cards, Bank Statements, Passports, et cetera. However, the rate of theft of one's card with all of this information on would be tremendous. Just imagine if someone got a hold of a simple string of digits that would give them access to your medical history, banking, credit, and passports. While the idea of ID theft is for more security, while making the general populous secure, we are giving more power to the evil minded.
If i did not have to worry about crime i would love an ID card. However, if i did not need to worry about crime i wouldn't need an ID card. I still want one nonetheless, because i bet it would be cool looking!
Just my $0.02.

I do not want to sound offtopic, but that sounds like the ultimate machine for any sub-50 employee business and/or graphic design. Personally, i did not even know Alpha architecture was still being made. It's great to see that after all of this time, the best there was is still around!
Great Read,
Thanks,

Personally, i feel programs like these are great. However, having to pay for them takes the purpose out of any free operating system. I'd just assume use windows for those programs, rather then pay a company to allow me to use those programs on a different operating system. Although, i understand why these programs have to be paid for. With the current American Economy, noone will develop anything without a monetary incentive. I just hope somewhere there is someone with extra time who will design a program such as this out of the goodness of his/her heart!

VMWare looks great, but i cant connect to their webpage to try it out so before i even bother i have a few questions maybe u guys can answer now that its out..
1. Does it SHARE a PPP link with all the OSes concurrently?
2. If i have win95 on/dev/hda1 and linux on/dev/hda3 i can run my win95 partition right?? or do i have to install windows on my linux partition??
to the best of my knowledge your brain sends messages to your nerves and other parts of your body at 240miles per hour.. no clue what this would be in bandwith terms.. now lets all focus on the brain for a few minutes.
The Brain's Clock Speed is equivalent To 60mhz, the brain's ram is rougly 2 megs (not counting for video).. if we knew how we could make the brain hold an infinite amount of data.
the brain mhz spectrum is broken up by the following: 10mhz Keep Your Body Going 10mhz Your Senses (does not slow down if you get blind or deaf whatever cause your brain still tries to process it) 10mhz is given to process what your senses see/do 10mhz is given to general thought and thought creation 5mhz is usually used to think about sex every 18seconds 5mhz is used for movement ie: sports and stuff 10mhz is used to solve problems and help u do extra activities
makes ya think when u read how this is layed out its not exact cause exact is like 8.0192823847238904723 or whatnot.. hope this helps!
heres what i would do with $5G a) by an awesome DELL/IBM Laptop (366mhz) and penguinize it. ($4500 for a really nice one) b) get a $2000 Comp (p3 when its out) and a great sony 21" monitor for like $1700. c) buy a nice comp for like $3000 and use the $2000 for some fun..
