I tend to think this is just complaining bull crap. My net connection when down too, and I don't run around demanding $5 back.
Maybe you should. TimeWarner Austin (part of the evil AOL Empire) will give credits for service problems with RoadRunner. All I have to do is call up whenever there is a problem (outages, etc.) and they credit me for the inconvenience.
I have to agree. Personally I can't think of a better system then a piece of paper and a pencil (scantron-esque). It's not subject to power blackouts, nor can it be hacked by a bunch of script kiddies. Plus there is the benefit of having a paper record that can be refered to later. Chads can fall off from handling - a pencil mark can't (since the pencils in the voting booths don't have erasers, any erased marks would indicate a ballot that has been tampered with). True the ballots can be misplaced or miraculously found, or even the dead can vote(just ask Mayor Daley or LBJ) but personally I feel better with having a paper ballot that I mark myself. Low tech is the way to go.
I'm sorry, but... ummm... they're YELLOW!
Not blue, or red, or hell... artic camouflage (you know... the bluish white kind) would've ROCKED.
Dude, their product is called Yellow Dog Linux. Not Blue Dog Linux, Red Dog Linux, or Artic Camoflage Dog Linux.
Personally I like the look and the color, but damn that is expensive. You can pick up a G4 Cube for about $1K and it can run MacOS 9, Yellow Dog Linux, and MacOS X.
it's my own fault. I got all excited about stuff I was reading about in rumor reports and then got let down by reality. Is it Apple's fault? No, they never came out and said "we'll have flat panel iMacs and a whole new case enclosure for the G4's". Oh well, these kinda goodies could come about at MWSF in January.
I will say I was impressed by the demo of OS X 10.1. It looks like they have put a lot of work into speeding up the system. Hats off to Apple, OS X is starting to look slick. I think I can wait until September to put OS X onto my G4 and my 8500.
My name is Mister Black and I am a bandwidth hog. I'm sorry, it's all my fault. I must apologize for the slowdown. I use my cable modem to download all the porn, mp3s, futurama and sifl&olly episodes I can. It's going to get much, much worse before it ever gets better because I'm not going to stop.
The two reasons I see why 'net advertising isn't bringing in the money that TV advertising does is a) market size/penetration: there are more TV's out there than computers and b) outlets: US TV has 4 main channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC). Thus there aren't as many channels to reach the audience as there are on the web. The advertisers are forced to compete in a much smaller marketplace and ad prices shoot up as a result. TV networks then have the money they need to make those really stupid shows you people watch.
You have a good point there. Perception is key. If the public doesn't think of it as nuclear then suddenly it isn't nuclear and thus doesn't have the associated negative baggage.
I'm not sure Motorola knows what direction they want to take the company. All their product divisions are floundering especially the PowerPC division. From some other bits of "news" on the web it looks like Apple is taking on more and more of the design aspect of the PowerPC chips and using Motorola and IBM as foundries. Eventually I think Motorola will fade from the picture and the PowerPC will be an Apple/IBM designed chip built by IBM.
last time i checked, cell phone towers needed electricity to run. all you need to do is send a few cruise missiles in and destroy power plants. without power this technology is useless, as is the chineese passive radio system. the transmitters may have redundant power backups ala flywheels and such but those don't last forever.
Texas has some really bizarre alcohol laws (Among other things, I am a bartender and can say in all honesty that the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) is insane - you Texans know what I'm talking about).
As far as guns go, IIRC, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun or ammunition for a handgun. However, at 18 you can purchase a rifle or shotgun (as well as ammunition) since you're probably going to go huntin'.
Here's a couple of images for you: one is of Austin and the other is a QTVR of Enchanted Rock which is about 150 miles away.
I eat beef and I don't have a gun either, but I still have the right to go and buy as many as my heart desires. We have socialists here, they are unemployed university students.
only in about 3 bass-ackwards states buddy. Protecting your property IS NOT a valid excuse for homcide.
So I should let someone break into my home and kill me? I live in Texas, one of the states you mislabel as "bass-ackwards" and if you come popping into my home I'd shoot your ass and it would be legal. Protection of your life, liberty, and property as well as those of your family are perfectly good reasons to shoot an intruder in your home. Then again you don't necessarily need to shoot anyone. Merely let the intruder hear you load your pump action shotgun. Hearing that sound will cause a sphincter-pucker factor of about 11.
IANAL...but, I would think that you could get the contract negated due to lack of good faith and misrepresentation on the part of Rambus. They told Hitachi (et al) that they (Rambus) held patents that Hitachi and others were infringing upon; Hitachi (et al) agreed to pay. Now if it turns out that Rambus does not hold the patents that Hitachi (et al) were told they were infringing then they (Hitachi and friends) shouldn't be forced to pay. AND I would argue that any money they did pay should be returned to them since Rambus commited fraud and stole $xx from them.
The Great Chinese Nation Hooray! USA Will Be With Responsibility for the Accident Totally!!! Protest USA sell Weapon to Taiwan, Break The World Peace!!! USA IS BITCH! I am from China---Peak
I have to hand it to him, at least he spelled all of the words correctly which is more than I can say for some of you for whom the English language is your native tongue. Somebody save this one - I think we can turn it into the next AYBABTU.
Totally different technology though - you had to make a direct radio connection to a central Bell facility, where an operator would route your call to the local exchange. Sort of a throw-back to the 1920's. And IIRC the total capacity of the Chicago system, for example, was about 20 simultaneous calls.
So how is this different than a cellphone? The only thing different now from what you describe above is increased capacity and we replaced operators with computers.
...for being off-topic, but I have a question for/. readers.
I want to build my own TiVO like system which can record and playback TV (I don't care about favorites or whatever, I just want it to record and playback TV -later I'll add DVD playback and mp3 player functions too). Can anyone point me to websites of people doing a project like this? Please help, I need something to do to keep me off the streets and from playing counter-strike all day long.
Thanks, Mister Black I am become death, the destroyer of worlds
I want to build my own TiVO like device. I want it to be able to record/playback TV shows and maybe even DVD playback. I'd also like to to use it as an mp3 server as well as anything else that I may think of in the future. Does anyone out there have any links of people working on this sort of thing? If possible I'd like to use LinuxPPC since I happen to have a spare PowerMac but I also have a K62 system collecting dust. Any help would be appreciated.
Mister Black Tired of being told what to do by the man.
but you know it's true. With this Balkanization now we can see/hear/read only the things we like or find appealing. Take/.: try saying something bad about linux or good about M$ and the moderators here will censor you into oblivion; now all of the others (who only read at +3 or above) can safely read only the good and happy things that a) they already know or b) are ideas they are comfortable with. e-masturbation at its best.
But a PowerBook running the MacOS was able to crack the Alien's central computer and upload a devastating virus that wiped them out and saved all of humanity.
actually, as I understand it pearl harbor was *not* a surprise to the intelligence community -- it was just decided not to announce it so that the average american would be happier to get into WWII (in other words, it was a political decision)
I've read and heard things like this too. But since I wasn't alive then I don't know and probably won't know for sure what the whole story is/was. We probably knew something was going to happen once we stopped oil shipments to Japan and froze all of their assests in the US. But there is a difference between thinking you're going to get punched in the face and actually getting punched in the face.
Politically it is much easier to get into a war of that magnitude if we can demonstrate a great need for it (like getting bombed and needing to retaliate) but if I remember my history correctly Britain and France had to convince us to fight in Europe first before concentrating soley on Japan. Again that could be pure rhetoric coming from the news agencies of the time or the goverment, but who is to say for sure. If it was a political decision to go ahead and take the bombing, it was a waste of life but it turned out for the best for America. We became the leading world power, had bases abroad, the war brought women into the workplace, and started (barely scratched the surface really) to remedy the racial situation (ala Jim Crow), not to mention the technical achievements created too (rockets, space travel, guided bombs, etc.)
Call the ISP for some of the members of the RIAA and the MPAA and see if you can get them to shutoff their access. What goes around comes around.

I'm pretty sure there are some Mitsubishi monitors that have USB hubs built into them. Try http://www.necmitsubishi.com/products/index.cfm

It's amazing what Peral Harbor can do to the American psyche. We vowed never again to be taken by surprise - that's what these installations are for.
