  3. Re:Apple, Theming, Stupidity on Apple Patents GUI Theme Engine · · Score: 2

Apple helps push the proverbial envelope of technology; often this is done by taking what geeks like you and i would consider simple technologies and advertising them as its own, touting impressive UI design and whatever other features we already know it for. by adding it to its systems [ after patenting it, of course ], Apple takes great ideas and publicizes them. a good example is Apple's inclusion of several shareware utilities, incl. WindowShade and Extensions Manager, in its System 7.5. although they were considered essential technologies to macaddicts, most end users had never heard of them. by including them in System 7.5's default installation, Apple pushed innovative products into the mainstream.

for this service to society, along with Apple's rebel facade, we think that it's a company on our side.

a good example of society's attempts to hinder modem usage is idt's choice to drop all dial-up service. this, of course, was done without telling all dial-up customers. that's one way to get people to switch to broadband, i suppose.

  6. injustice is served on Appeals Court Puts Amazon 1-Click Patent in Question · · Score: 1

"We have said throughout this case that we do not intend to sit back and allow Amazon.com to stake a claim upon any technology that is widely used. Allowing them to do so abridges our rights as a leader in e-commerce, but more important limits the choices of customers. We consider the customer, not the retailer, to be at the heart of e-commerce," the company [ bn ] said.

patent serve to prevent others from using a technology that you developed; to encourage innovation by protecting inventors' work . thus, amazon.com had every right to register this patent. in the same way that putting air in shoes was an amazing concept 17 years ago, creating a shopping cart online to avoid the process of e-mailing order numbers and credit card information, etc., was a major step forward in e-commerce. for bn to claim that it didn't steal the technology is ludicrous. it's even more amazing that bn dares claim that amazon.com does not put the customer at the forefront of all of its operations. if amazon.com thought that the retailer was "at the heart of e-commerce," it would not exist today. bn copied amazon.com's concept of a shopping cart because it works so well, and generated so much excitement in e-commerce by customers.

amazon.com deserves the patent it was granted; patents were created, after all, to promote innovation. i doubt that anyone could justifiably argue that the online shopping cart is not a major technological innovation.

perhaps i should restate my last comment... shouldn't corporations be more focused on working for the customer than working for themselves, i.e. keep legal issues behind closed doors and keep customer satisfaction as the number one concern? it just seems like a more logical solution to me, but perhaps i'm being naive.

i was in mozambique, botswana and south africa in january, and the real problems faced are not specifically the lack of technology, but rather the lack of infrastructure. with people paying for 9600 - 28800 baud dial-up access over a poor phone line by the minute, there is little opportunity to explore the world of the internet and have locals develop the technology needed to form a stronger digital presence. this is less true in south africa than in mozambique and botswana. when i discussed the purpose of geekcorps and how i plan to join some day, people were excited, but realized that in many ways our knowledge would be hindered. all i can recommend to those of you who make big bucks in the US or elsewhere is to contribute to world associations who are trying to develop the country's infrastructure quickly and cleanly.
