  1. I don't know if this would be legal. on Fight Virus With Virus? · · Score: 0, Redundant

I've played with this idea before as well but the one thing that I always thought that this seems like it would be equivalent to breaking into someones house and then fixing the way you came in. It's still breaking in, regardless. Kind of a "white hat" hacker deal but that still is considered a "no no" in the eyes of the law.

You're still infecting them with a virus, it's just a good virus and you could probably be brought up on charges under some computer crime legislation.

  2. Re:self defense is the key term on Tracking Great Whites By Satellite · · Score: 1

I understand what you're saying but it still seems somewhat odd to me. I mean, I don't know much about diving either but I've heard (not entirely sure) sometimes they carry knives on a dive to be prepared for the worst. Let's say I'm diving and a shark takes a nip at my leg, I'm going to use any means necessary (including the knife) to get him off me before he decides he likes the taste of my arm more than my leg.

I can see how, without specifying the self-defense part, people could still kill great whites without reason but at the same time, if I show up in a court room with a hunk of my leg missing and plead guilty to killing the damn shark, I'd like to know they'd let me off. :-)

Frankly, it's all a moot point since I don't dive, I don't live in Austraila and it all doesn't really matter for me. The law seemed silly until you pointed that out. Now it seems less silly but still sort of unfair to someone who is capable of defending themselves against a shark attack (despite however rare that may be).

Thanks for raising a good point though. ;-)

  3. My purchase from Dell... on Which Laptop To Buy? · · Score: 1

I know, Dell isn't on a lot of people's "Hot" list since they took Linux off as one of the configuration options but they really do have some sweet deals going on right now. Last month, I bought a Dell Inspiron "Thin and Light" (and they really are pretty thin and light ;-)), 128 megs of RAM, 30 gig HD, DVDROM plus a wireless hub and card from them all to the tune of about $1600. Without the wireless jazz it was about $1300, so they have some reasonable deals and a decent payment plan option for all of us poor college student geeks that need new hardware. ;-)

So if you're looking for an affordable laptop, I'd go with Dell.

  4. Two years in jail? on Tracking Great Whites By Satellite · · Score: 3, Informative

Hmmm... that's a tough one: I get attacked by a shark and I get to choose between two years in jail with my cellmate Bubba or being eaten alive.

[sarcasm]I love my choices![/sarcasm] That doesn't seem fair at all. I mean, I don't know about Austrailian law so mabye someone can tell me but if you're attacked on the street by someone, you can defend yourself with equal force and not face legal problems right? What's the difference between that and me killing an animal intending to make me a before dinner snack?

What if some thief could manage to know you're normal schedule via these camera's and knew when the perfect time was to rob your house? And I won't even go into the whole stalker issue, that would open a whole new world for them to keep track of their victims. I don't think anyone should have access to these cameras. I don't know about that. I think that's a damned amusing way to handle the situation. I mean, which would get your attention faster:

    1. A image that says "STOP STEALING MY CONTENT"
    2. A image so lewd that your users start emailing you and letting you know that there is some weird porn on the page you're serving up.

It's taken us how long to realize and then accept the fact that we may be facing a serious problem with global warming?

And just my two cents: I think this looks really cool but I'm with a lot of the other people who posted that they're gunna wait to see what happens to these peoples eyes after a few years. 16. Re:Loyality *should* exist with a good company. on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

In my opinion, the people make the company. To be loyal to the company means to be loyal to your coworkers and the management.

I should probably mention that my company has only 40 or so people, so it's a very close enviornment and doesn't suffer from the "faceless entity" that most big corporations suffer from. I suppose we just differ on the definition of a company.

  17. Loyality *should* exist with a good company. on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

Even though I think the person asking the question should bail because a funding issue just sounds like a sinking ship - I think there is such a thing as company loyality. Maybe you just haven't worked at the right company yet. I've been at mine for a number of years now and have been made one or two offers that would provide me with more money but I've refused them.

They've treated me well since day one: good enviornment, good projects, decent management, etc. etc. If a company treats me with respect, I think they deserve some loyality and respect. If my own well being was being threatened, I may turn tail and run. It is just business and if I can't put food on my table then I'm not sticking around. However, I've seen people hop from job to job for increasing amounts of money and I think that's quite disrespectful to a good company. Leaving a good job for another job just because they'll pay you 5k - 10k more just ain't cool.

  18. Could provide more help by leaving... on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 2

In my opinion, it'd be better to bail. First of all, if it's a definite sinking ship then you need to be able to keep a roof over your own head before worrying about others and those offers won't be there forever. Secondly, you may be able to offer more help to your fellow coworkers by establishing a position at another job and arranging interviews for some of them at your new job.

    Just my .02.
