  1. Their CO2 claims don't make sense to me on Ultracapacitor Bus Recharges At Each Stop · · Score: 2, Interesting

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas:

Fuel name CO2 emitted (lbs/106 Btu)
    Fuel oil 161
    Coal (bituminous) 205
    Coal (subbituminous) 213
    Coal (lignite) 215
    Coal (anthracite) 227

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine#Energy_efficiency:
"most engines retain an average efficiency of about 18%-20%"

    From http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_energy_efficiency_of_an_average_coal_powered_plant:
"According to Hans-Dieter Schilling (Energie-Fakten), the average efficiency of all coal power stations in the world currently stand at around 31%"

Mashing those numbers around a bit I get around 900lbs of CO2 per usable MMBTU from diesel (fuel oil, close enough for these rough numbers), vs 700lbs of CO2 per usable MMBTU from coal based electricity. That's not even 1/3 less, far from the 2/3 less they are claiming.

There are extraction/transmission/conversion losses in both cases that could be factored in, but it's hard to see how it could change their math by a factor of two.

    Am I missing something obvious?

It's not necessarily faster but it sure is more comfortable, at least for me.

dr zowie, will that much solar radiation be dangerous to us humans? I mean, I'm naked a lot.

also, i have a tendency to get naked while on an airplane. is that even more dangerous since an airplane flies higher than the limit of the iambosphere? do i need to wear a lead loincloth while streaking planes?

    inquiring minds want to know.

    thanks!

I live at an ecovillage in Missouri...we run a Ford pickup truck and VW Jetta on biodiesel and have been doing so for over two years. Don't believe the newspaper hype and start imagining the "stench of french fries" and whatnot. Not true. Every so often, a diesel vehicle (usually soon after startup or hard acceleration) emits a foul burst of diesel fumes. Except a biodiesel vehicle emits a french-fry smelling blast instead of a burnt petroleum smell. A vast improvement.

This is proven technology, lots of inner city bus lines use it, it cuts emissions of SOx and NOx by 80%, is available from producers all over the U.S.A., etc. etc. blah blah. More details available at http://www.dancingrabbit.org/biodiesel/.

  6. never even really hired on She Was Fired, But Never Told · · Score: 1

i got hired by c|net way back, once, to be a tester. i filled out the application, got called in for an interview, and was told i was hired. i waited a few days but didn't hear anything so i called in to find out what was up. it was impossible to get ahold of the guy who had hired me so after a week i just took a different .com job. Ah, the bay area... unfortunately i got no severance pay out of the deal.
