Grab a cluestick. Maybe because there are things out there BETTER than MPEG? The sorensen codec is kickass for quality and file size.
For me, however an a lot of linux users the visual quality of Sorensen is zero. I refuse to install quicktime on my computer beacuse it absolutly rapes windows (the only program worse is real player). Since I can't see quicktimes, I don't think to much of the image quality.
If apple would put out a 'play nice' app with a decent UI, I might consider takeing it, untill then I'll stick with open standards.
clue #2. Making a GOOD codec is NOT something that you're going to whip up over the weekend. This is something that is based on YEARS of signal processing and perceptual research.
The reaserch has already been done, all we'd have to do is implement it
One of things I hate about quicktime is that it rapes your system if your on windows. It really pisses me off, I mean they have a system set up that lets you set your filetypes yourself. I guess Apple peple thought PC users were to stupid to handle that themselves.
Anyway, now IE can't even show PNGs in non inline form. They work fine as inlines, but not as individual URLs. Its retarded. I need to use Mozilla to view them. Quite irritating. I wish apple would die, and take there propritary BS codecs with them.
Most Mac users own several boxen, whenever the old ones go obsolete, they just buy a new one. I wouldn't be surprised if the average number of Mac's a Mac user has purchased was something like five or six.
I don't see why measuring the sales of Linux distros isn't a valid measurement of use. Its possible that you might miss some users, but who would pay for more then one distro of Linux in the time they would buy only one Mac?
OK, so I guess Bruce Sterling feels the need to declare rockets and space as "uncool" on behalf of computer geeks everywhere.
Huh? where did Sterling say anything about computer Geeks in his artical? I didn't see it anywhere. The artical didn't say that you shouldn't think rocketships are cool, only that he dosn't think they are, or that most people don't think they're cool ether.
And the fact is, there not. At least, not anywhere as cool as they were when they started. I mean can you imagen? It would be like having warp drive today. But, eventualy, warp drive would loose its novelty. You mentioned transatlantic cables. When was the last time you downloaded something from europe and thought. "Wow, this is going over a cable through the sea! that's amazing."
While I like The Matrix more then I liked Fight Club, I'd have to say fight club Looked Nicer. It was only nominated for Sound effects editing, and I think it should at least have been nominated for visual editing as well, if not taken the prize.
The Matrix was a great movie, but Fight club was really origional (At least, I'd never seen anything quite like it). And they actualy used editing in new and artistic ways, as opposed to just spliceing a story together well, like The Matrix.
Actually, the review in question was from someone who had never taken his class, and therefore could not have gotten a bad grade. He simply stated that his current English teacher warned him not to curzon-brown's class.
While I'm sure you enjoyed bitching about all the people who were better then you in high school, but who actually turned out not to be anywhere near as smart as you is nether relevant to the discussion or at all.
Should we throw another human wave of structural engineers at stabilizing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, or should we just let the damn thing fall over and build a tower that doesn't suck? -- Neal Stephenson comenting on why Linux kicks ass
Actualy, the quote was talking about why BeOS Kicked ass, not linux. He does really like linux, but not for that reason.

The above poster is using her name for comic effect (and quite well, I might add).
I was only trying to point out that there can be more then one viewpoint on things. My position is defensible, infact I had an assignment once to defend that position in a history class once. By the end of the class period, we had convinced many of the people there that the brits were right (This was in middleschool, it had more to do with charisma then anything else)
In any event. Its certanly posible to look at the events in this manner if you want to. And it is certanly possible to look at the MP3 situation from many posible viewpoints. The American revolution was certanly against the law at the time no matter how you look at it.
You should read the artical again. This has nothing directly to do with apple at all. Its a small company, and walmart. Walmart ripped off there design, the company sued, and walmart won.
The American revolution was nothing more then a bunch of freeloaders who didn't want to pay there taxies, after Britain spent hundreds of millions defending the country in the French and Indian war. Please, there was nothing 'movement like' about this revolt.
Ok, so people want free music without paying for it, and there doing it in mass. Is it right? Maybe, maybe not. It's illegal to pirate music, but then most revolutionary ideas are when they go against the fiber of the current entrenched power. Will ultimately harm the music industry? Probably. Will it harm the quality of music? Who knows? Even so, Marxism ended up being detrimental, but you could hardly not call that 'movement'.
In any event, the MP3 'situation' is definitely destabilizing the music industry right now, it is an agent of powerful change, and could have long lasting effects. Despite how you might feel about there motives and objectives, it is a movement.
Of all the double thinking, twisted arguments... Man this takes the cake. Hello? Read the news lately? Read the ARTICLE? The judgment is precisely designed to make it harder for assholes to harass people.
If by assholes, you mean independent, small companies, and by 'people' you mean Wal-Mart, then you would be correct. However, that was exactly what the previous poster was trying to say, so I'm not exactly sure where the 'doublethink' is.
While the legal precedent set may be helpful in this specific case, its almost certain to help 'HUGEcorp'
You show me ONE commerically available PC machine, pre iMac, that had that size monitor and took up less volume and footprint than the iMac.
Some of the corporate boxen were smaller, to small to fit PCI cards in horozontaly, actualy. You put the monitor on top, so the footprint was smaller then an Imac, quite a bit smaller. And you could even use a 17inc monitor with them.
My linux boxes are monitorless and well tucked under various desks in my office.
:P
What good would quicktime be for you then?
You know that?
MPEG is an open standard defined by the motion picture exsperts group.

Patents on the codecs prevent anyone other than sorensen
Patents don't prevent anything, they just make it illigal. Presuably, this software would be on the same level (or lower) as DeCSS.
Reverse-engineering a compressed video format is next to impossible
If its patented, should all of the technology be described by the patent? It should be, that's the whole point of the patent.

but I'm sure most artists make about $1 per CD (if not less).
Actualy, its more like a dime, unless you're a huge band like the smashing pumpkins or whatever.
There is no questionability of this service, it only provides access to songs that you already own. How could that be illegal?
If they want to do it, then they should be allowed to do so, dispite what the record companies want.
And, in turn he owns most of the company. I'm sure he knows whats going on here...
