Read the post above you by 'SteveWoz' and others under my top level comment. It serves as inspiration.
I agree that the newsworthiness of this post is questionable, however, at the time I wrote my top level, there were only a few dozen posts, many that had nothing to do with the contents of the article (beyond picking nits about word choice). Can we complain about slashdot story choice, headline editing, and slanted text? Sure? But why waste the time.
And incredible amount of nerd effort around here is spent whining and moaning about all sorts of stuff. Much less effort is spent on getting shit done. Focus on the latter; it's harder, but the rewards are much greater.
Not a bad analysis, not bad at all. I'd give it a B+. You should have also corrected for the depreciation of the assets, thus lowering the cost of the computers, and I would have presented the TVM values not in today's numbers, but in numbers from when decisions were made to keep on keeping on.
It is this kind of analysis that leaves slashdotters sucking their thumbs in bewilderment in a cube farm while others get out there and make money.
There are plenty of comments that are filled with contempt "this joke of a 'spacecraft'". I think a lot of it is jealousy.
This. Jealous of jocks for getting the hot chicks, jealous of musicians for being able to tap out a beat, jealous of MBAs for making lots of money, jealous for real nerds for getting out and doing something.
If slashdot ever allows real article moderation (and not that firehose abortion), in addition to 'flamebait' and 'troll', can we have a '-1, pedant bait' article? Seriously, at the time of this comment, of 35 articles, at least half are arguing over whether or not this is truly a spacecraft. It's really easy to shit on others from the safety of your parents' basement. Whether it has been done before is also irrelevant. This father and son is doing something. There's too many complainers to call someone else out specifically, but what have you people done lately? I don't claim to have done anything interesting of late, but I also am not shitting on what others have done.
But the Apple Peel is a notable example of "reverse innovation," in which Chinese developers have found ways to tweak products from foreign countries and make them more suitable for the domestic market, Wu said.
Funny, I always said that is a case of them doing whatever the hell they please because they have no appreciation for the hard work of others.
MSNBC can only be compared to Fox on the basis of their primetime programming (and the overnight repeats). From roughly 5 am until 6 pm, MSNBC is rather balanced, while the Fox propaganda continues unabated. How can you call Joe Scarborough "pro-Democrat" and how does Mrs. Alan Greenspan (is she still on midday?) owe allegiance to anyone other than big business? You won't find a prominent Democratic ex Representative on for three hours on Fox. You won't find the spouse of the head of the UAW with a show on Fox.
The simple equation "MSNBC=Fox, but on the left" is absurd.
The next time you find yourself tempted to apply contemporary values to actions taken hundreds of years in the past, I'd like you to take a step back, take a deep breath, try to slap some god damned sense into yourself.
Not everybody likes Japanese girls. And if the girls you see are using padded bras, they aren't of much interest either.
My comment, perhaps not 'insightful' in some grand sense of the word, but relative to the discussion, I think the argument can be made. GP seemed to denigrate smalltalk while ignoring the upside. Given the social difficulties many slashdotters seem to have, perhaps this observation, to them, appears insightful.

Mandatory blindfolds or hoods.
Can we leave my sex life out of this?
It seems he makes his money selling new computers so of course new equipment would be the answer to every problem.

He's full of shit, as usual.
He could have sold the empty case of that computer for more than $30 on eBay.
It's pedantry when the masses who comment (including myself) comment on the meta-issues rather than on the actual achievements of this father and son.

I can't figure out why you and the GP'insightful comments were modded "Troll" and "Flamebait".
Not going on with the /. groupthink of the day.
Were it not for Apple, whose products would the Chinese 'tweak'?
The difference is that Apple has paid licensing fees. Random Chinese copycat production company? Not so much.
What is an iTouch?
You've also taken my comment out of context, which included the quote from the article.
And you're replying to a troll, but that's a shame on me.
From the article:

YHBT.
YHL.
HAND.
I thought it was some weird perl module.
What's the open competitor to the aforementioned consoles? What can I drag out to play video games on when my friends visit without PCs in tow?
If the market is so full of opportunity, go make your own.

Then the appropriate answer is to outlaw driving like a jackass. And guess what? There are already many laws that address this on the books.
wow I fudged that second to last paragraph. I need a better proof reader, because I suck at it.... badly.
Admit it: you were driving while you typed that.
Only problem with this line of thinking is that it's never Lupus.

Of course, because there is absolutely no relation between the Nazi's and Socialists. None whatsoever.
Now, plug your ears and repeat that over and over whenever someone tells you what Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei means.
It means a fascist douchebag co-opted a nice, grass roots organization to his own tyrannical means.
Kinda like Dick Armey and Glenn Beck.

Never let facts get in the way of righteous indignation.

Oh, this here is an interesting site to go along with the others you have there.
