What no Java! Uhh. Thats the best language for the problem. Last summer I did produce couple of correctly looking programs that failed, because of few little details in the runtime that changed the operation.
There was couple of big reasons for slot1 L2 cache. Now in PPro that was in EXPENSIVE package. To lower costs they moved it to PCB. Socket8 HAD L2 cache on CPU package. It was REALLY expensive because they couldn't test it before putting both processor and L2 cache on package and needed to scrap it if ONE would have a problem. So they wasted LOTS of silicon per working package.
And for performance reasons they HAD TO move the L2 cache from MB to closer to the CPU. As for time being they could clock the on PCB L2 cache twice as fast compared to MB and have lower latencies too. And having separate bus for L2 cache makes the processor faster on continuing loads from L2 cache after a L2 cache miss. And for multiprocessors, the MB based L2 cache would mean that each processor would eat up the bus bandwith for L2 cache accesses. There is BIG difference in performance in workstation software or QUAKE on L2 cache bandwith and latency, that was the reason slot was for that period of time. Its time when processors where fast enough to saturate the FSB if L2 cache was in FSB side so that it would of come as bottleneck, but the mfg process wasn't advanced enough to a point where moving L2 cache ondie was better use of transistors than branch predictor, L1 cache sizes, more execution units etc... So thats with the slots. BTW: Original celerons came WITHOUT L2 cache, so selling systems without L2 wasn't problem for intel. Well thats one thing, shutting others up because you don't wan't to listen to them. That's U.S.S.R solution. In west you just ignore its just noise, some times if there's too much noise, you just ask them to reduce the volume, or say your not interested. You don't have to listen. Under some issues, yes. For instance if the question is about hmmm. The other solution is to either argue and fight until its marriage is finished, if there are two different opinions and there HAS TO be some sort of mechanism to find a solution. One asks men to take responcibility and love their wifes more than them self, and wifes to subordinate to man. And other is have nothing and eventually divorce.

There are FEW minor issues on what you where thinking, comparing itanium to X86: Itanium 6 integer units shortpipeline, 3 branchunits, multiple FMAC, smaller CORE size than netburst on equal process. Yes, on same process itanium2 core is smaller than netburst. Biggest block after bus interface and L3 cache on itanium2 are block called IA32 and FP-units. Itanium brings huge execution resources with low die area costs, and then puts huge caches that have redundancy so that MFG costs wouldn't be much worse than celerons mfg costs, while giving HPC performance. I had some doubts on itanium until I read the die photo and compared to my knowledge on whats taking die area on x86. When itanium will ditch IA32 hardware compability since these days dynamic translation software is faster than what hardware does and it still gets better. With carefull powermanagement (By no doubt FP takes substantial portion of Itanium2:s powerbudget and ditching IA32 should also free reasources for other use. X86 is not just a instruction set its whole set of laws how instructions interact exceptions memory models etc... many tricks for x86 to run fasts are not needed, so IA-64 can be smaller. Now don't put that it some how needs bigger cache. No the software that is run needs certain sized DATA caches no matter the architecture, for a given performance level. Now the itanium looks like a great TARGET for dynamic translation software as SGI has MIPS simulations running much faster than native mips, and Itanium2 x86 compability SOFTWARE layer runs fast too... And in next year itanium will get 512KB L2 Icache so what ever you think for code density problems intel fixes by trowing more cache as a solution...
Now HP dumping workstations its nothing big. Nearly all Itanium sales where in server side, because the price for workstation level chipsets, especially because of HP pricing policy, of 2X the risc worstation price and 5X the x86 price. 2007 is the year when Itanium either sinks or swims, its year where it will get price parity with xeon, by sharing motherboards and drivers with it...
No it doesnot. Binary size means verylittle from loading it from HD. Consider this. 10ms latency from HD and 60MB bandwith. Latency takes 1/100th of a second and for 1MB binary the bandwith takes 1/60th of a second. If different compiler doubles the binary size it still won't produce anything that hits you hard compared to something like loading from 2 or more small configuration files during startup... Now if we have a 10MB binary its still far less than a second. Think. Loading binary if you have plenty of ram should take much less than a second, and start up just loads settings, data etc, or initializes things that takes time too and probably more than what you save from getting slightly bigger binary.

I must tell you few things. About mixing religion and science. When science becomes a religion and is taken as a religious stance WITHOUT significant backing in bible people get really wrong.
For instance. Flat world. That was SCIENCE stance long time ago. And catholic church made that part of the religion instead of taking what bible said. [Earth is ROUND. Without making stance weather its 2D round or 3D round, as we don't know if there is different word for each form of round at the ancient hebrew.] Now the religion took the issue that was not anyway in its domain and made it a static decision its this way period.
Plenty of scientists on several universities are christian fundamentalists and do a serious research. Also there is plenty of scientists that have made their own view of the matter as strong religion to them and have strong believe in it even against facts.
If we would talk about evolution, as its the most common argument ground, most of what we call science in that part is mostly a gues work and trusting the deductions based on the quesses. Now people make observations then theories and if some observations fit the theory they deduce *ALL* the theory must be true. Instead of seeing that if some FAIL the theory then theory must have flaws.
How many generations early birds didn't breath because of LARGE change in the lungs with impossible to breath with out ALL the changes happening at same time on TWO birds one female and one male and they just happen to mate each other ? There are plenty of symbiotic animals, which happened first, the symbiot found WHICH of the symbiots adapted to other first? Now what started the big bang? Where does the material and energy in big bang come from?

And sexism, well men and women ARE different, and many women actually LIKE more dominating men. In new testament while wifes are asked to be sub ordinated to husbands the husbands are asked to love their wifes like Jesus loved the congregation which in practice means that while husband makes the FINAL decision if they don't agree, men should sacrificially love their wifes, and take wife's best interest in account. Now the abuse that part of scripture has been taken by ignorand people so that they don't read what is husbands obligation, is really terrible. The other solution is to either argue and fight until its marriage is finished, if there are two different opinions and there HAS TO be some sort of mechanism to find a solution. One asks men to take responcibility and love their wifes more than them self, and wifes to subordinate to man. And other is have nothing and eventually divorce.
ps. I think the law original topic is lousy, and won't be anyway usefull. But still they should have equal right to try making it as other groups trying to pass their favourite laws. So that groups should find better compromises with others if they are going to have any affect anyway.

There are FEW minor issues on what you where thinking, comparing itanium to X86:
Itanium 6 integer units shortpipeline, 3 branchunits, multiple FMAC, smaller CORE size than netburst on equal process. Yes, on same process itanium2 core is smaller than netburst. Biggest block after bus interface and L3 cache on itanium2 are block called IA32 and FP-units. Itanium brings huge execution resources with low die area costs, and then puts huge caches that have redundancy so that MFG costs wouldn't be much worse than celerons mfg costs, while giving HPC performance.
I had some doubts on itanium until I read the die photo and compared to my knowledge on whats taking die area on x86. When itanium will ditch IA32 hardware compability since these days dynamic translation software is faster than what hardware does and it still gets better. With carefull powermanagement (By no doubt FP takes substantial portion of Itanium2:s powerbudget and ditching IA32 should also free reasources for other use.
X86 is not just a instruction set its whole set of laws how instructions interact exceptions memory models etc... many tricks for x86 to run fasts are not needed, so IA-64 can be smaller. Now don't put that it some how needs bigger cache. No the software that is run needs certain sized DATA caches no matter the architecture, for a given performance level. Now the itanium looks like a great TARGET for dynamic translation software as SGI has MIPS simulations running much faster than native mips, and Itanium2 x86 compability SOFTWARE layer runs fast too... And in next year itanium will get 512KB L2 Icache so what ever you think for code density problems intel fixes by trowing more cache as a solution...

Nearly all Itanium sales where in server side, because the price for workstation level chipsets, especially because of HP pricing policy, of 2X the risc worstation price and 5X the x86 price. 2007 is the year when Itanium either sinks or swims, its year where it will get price parity with xeon, by sharing motherboards and drivers with it...
No it doesnot. Binary size means verylittle from loading it from HD.
Consider this. 10ms latency from HD and 60MB bandwith. Latency takes 1/100th of a second and for 1MB binary the bandwith takes 1/60th of a second. If different compiler doubles the binary size it still won't produce anything that hits you hard compared to something like loading from 2 or more small configuration files during startup... Now if we have a 10MB binary its still far less than a second.
Think. Loading binary if you have plenty of ram should take much less than a second, and start up just loads settings, data etc, or initializes things that takes time too and probably more than what you save from getting slightly bigger binary.

With current discussion. I made my mistake of ASSUMING something that was common enough would have stable linux drivers. I just was made unlucky purchase of something common enough that HAD to have stable linux drivers. And result was it wasnt stable! Yes thats the problem, bad drivers happen in other systems than windows too! [ATI,via...] On the other hand I'll probably buy a grafix card when I can afford one, and that'll have stable drivers.

I must tell you few things. About mixing religion and science. When science becomes a religion and is taken as a religious stance WITHOUT significant backing in bible people get really wrong.
For instance. Flat world. That was SCIENCE stance long time ago. And catholic church made that part of the religion instead of taking what bible said. [Earth is ROUND. Without making stance weather its 2D round or 3D round, as we don't know if there is different word for each form of round at the ancient hebrew.] Now the religion took the issue that was not anyway in its domain and made it a static decision its this way period.
Plenty of scientists on several universities are christian fundamentalists and do a serious research.
Also there is plenty of scientists that have made their own view of the matter as strong religion to them and have strong believe in it even against facts.
If we would talk about evolution, as its the most common argument ground, most of what we call science in that part is mostly a gues work and trusting the deductions based on the quesses. Now people make observations then theories and if some observations fit the theory they deduce *ALL* the theory must be true. Instead of seeing that if some FAIL the theory then theory must have flaws.
