    Only problem I can see if people on dial-up links with dynamically assigned IP addresses. On other other hand, how hard would've been to store the time along with the IP and not allow votes from that IP for a given period of time (say 5 -> 10 minutes?) ...

    To address your points in turn ...

    1) Can be done with aliases in bash, tcsh and zsh (and doubtless maybe others?). ie: alias move mv, alias copy cp, alias delete rm

    Admitedly most distributions don't come with those as defaults, but it wouldn't be that hard to add an extra setting in the user creation program "user is stupid" which would auto toggle these (and a few other things) on.

    2 Automount(?) should deal with the CDs, floppies are a little harder ... plug and pray is (IIRC) being worked on?

    3 GUIs are being worked on - ever heard of KDE / GNOME perhaps??? Besides which, not everyone believes that Linux is ready for the desktop *yet* (which that 'yet' part being important - it's getting there!).

    4 Is coming along nicely I believe???

    I would've though a more reasonable quote would've been precisely the opposite! But then the nice thing about Industry Standards(TM) is there's so many to choose from!

    However it's interesting to note that HP think Linux doesn't scale beyond 4 processors - kind of fails to track with MS' assertion that Linux doesn't scale *at all!*

    Some of your points are quite reasonable, however I'm still going to be picky about a few of them!

    Read the article again ... what *new* security hole was found in *Linux*??? Err, none!

    A moderately old bug in crontab, which was already know about and a fix available was exploited ... as was a bug in a program for which the source was available, but not subject to peer review.

    Can we set up an NT4.0/SP0 machine and see how long it takes to get that hacked??? Seems like a fair comparison to me!

    Hmmm ... as I said last time you posted this (over the Win2K thread IIRC!) I asked you to post some sources for this ... which you haven't!

    I also asked you how Walnut Creek could expect to violate the BSD license and the GPL ... again, no response!

    In short, you are a troll - get back under your bridge and stop bothering us with irrelevancies ...

    You would of course, have a reference for that relating to real data??? Or did you just make it up!

    ... in any case, so what if FreeBSD is trademarked? Given that (if I understand things correctly) all the code is under either the BSD license or the GPL what's to stop me creating UserBSD(*) - a more user friendly BSD variant???

    Or do you have a reference as to how they intend to ignore the BSD license *and* the GPL???

    ... failing all else, if they do manage to block use of FreeBSD code what are they planning to do about NetBSD, OpenBSD and Linux (which IIRC does include some BSD code!) - also, how are they going to prevent someone merely creating a userfriendly NetBSD varient (which wouldn't take much work in porting!)???

    Are you in fact just a troll???

    * - I will admit that I think the name UserBSD is a really bad one, however if anyone actually wants to use it - feel free!

    PS: I'm actually a Linux user, however I feel better about the world knowing the *BSDs are out there too!

    Yeah, used to get that fault reported quite a bit where I used to work (large UK construction company). The opinion there was to blame WordPerfect 8, however the solution was quite simple and didn't involve reboots -> simply unplug and then re-plug the keyboard lead!

    On the guns front, look at the UK ... incremental removal of gun types works there. All you really need are a few massacres (preferably with a big "CNN factor"), followed by press outrage that "something must be done!" ...

    Oh so you mean Be doesn't have the standard disclaimer about how it's not their fault if the product isn't "fit for purpose" like Microsoft??? I suppose it would be a definite plus point if there was actually someone you could sue when/if it all went wrong.

    One of these days I will work out who to report Microsoft to (Trading Standards Office I think) over their illegal(*) licensing agreement.

    * Illegal in that it attemptes to violate my statutory rights, which you're not allowed to do!

    This sounds very close to an ongoing thread on uk.comp.os.linux ... what precisely do you have against X? (Though at least you got the name right, which is more than the original poster on ucol did!)

    Yeah right ...

    However this is the great webpage which refers to Apache as an operating system component (strange, I thought it was a web server?), and uses a link to Linux Weekly News to try and prove that Linux is less secure and has more bugs!

    It also quotes statistics with no backup, such as (NT is) "37 precent less expensive to setup and operate"

    Hmmm ... Start with a blank pc, a RedHat CD and a Win95 CD - which is easier to install? Redhat, because you can put the CD in and boot of or Win95 where you go off with a floppy disk looking for an existing installation so you can create a boot disk!

    Interestingly enough, that's all I did to get my Linux box attached to the 'net! (Well, to be honest I did have to enter the IP addresses of the name servers as well but that wasn't exactly a great hardship.)

    That said, getting PPP and X11 to work are probably the two things that could do with some work (IMHO obviously). I didn't have any problems with either but my hardware isn't exactly cutting edge stuff - I worry about some newbie with their "latest stuff"(TM) PC not being able to work it out ...
