    This may very well be the case of iPhone in China, given that it only recently started officially selling there.

    You haven't heard of Cyanogenmod, have you? It's an alternative operating system you can install on Android devices (I know I'm not the only person who twitches when people say "androids" to refer to any Android device, as if all of them are equivalent and running the exact same software).

    On the Cyanogenmod page I counted 225 supported devices. http://opensignal.com/reports/fragmentation-2013/ says they found 11,868 distinct devices running Android - back in 2013.

    Your anecdote doesn't really mean much. Apple has much better retention than other companies, ...

    Apple calls it "retention," the rest of us call it "vendor lock-in."

    The vendor lock-in, that according to all the "Ha, but I switched from iPhone to Android, so there!" anecdotes here obviously doesn't exist.

    Context? Nobody watches in context. If he makes two "light digs" at Android, that's your story. Apple just went from the "industry leader", telling people what they want, to the "industry reactor", telling them what they don't want. I

    Actually, the sales numbers tell that, based on what the people already knew. The only people who need to be told are those still in denial.

    I don't know anybody who pirates shows to a sd card and watches them on their phone. i'm pretty sure that use case is imaginary.

    Sorry, I didn't realize you know all smartphone users. I guess the "1 million plus" downloads and 29,294 reviews of The Pirate Bay Browser on the Google Play store are imaginary.

    An android phone is quite flexible and allows quite a bit of freedom to the user. An Apple phone may look cool, but as soon as you think of stuff that you like (other favorite web browser etc.) you are toast.

    What's that even supposed to mean? That Android phones don't look cool? That they, unlike iPhones, can't make toast? That an iPhone user when he thinks of, say, unicorns, he turns into toast?

    You must be new to the planet, because Google overtook Apple as the most valuable brand a week or so ago.

    In one of many rankings. In Forbes' Google is only #5 (guess who's on top). Interbrand has Google still on #2. BrandZ dito. And those are just the top three surveys when googleing.

    You do realize that that report only garnered the attention because Apple didn't win this one for a change?

    The rumor seems to be (and this makes sense to me) that Beats was purchased for their licensing deals and personnel more than for their headphones.

    Apple pretty much says this in the press release - which is the first link in the summary.

    So, Apple's DRM on AAC wasn't proprietary and didn't prevent other devices from playing purchased content? (Don't argue that ITMS is now DRM free - the DRM was in place when Apple was taking over with the iPod).

    The DRM was there because the music industry insisted on it. All online music stores before and after also had DRM (apart from those with questionable legality, and those with music hardly anybody wanted). And no store owner but Apple spoke out for the removal of DRM.

    You still don't get it, do you? At Google, you're not the customer... You are the product. Or more to the point, your browsing habits and associated data is the product. That's why there is Google+. Imagine the windfall Google would gain if they could have the kind of active user base of Facebook joined with their business model.

    Err....isn't that agreeing with the parent? Why does Google have the 'most valuable' consumer brand when the consumers are those buying ads from Google and people are the product?

    There is still a difference between "consumer" and "customer" - Just use (gasp) Google (or Bing!*%$ or DuckduckGo) and search for "consumer vs customer"

    I recall a survey of (non-trivial) corporate spreadsheets in the mid-90's, it went something like 95% had a maths bug, in 80% of cases the bug made the sheet useless, 50% of the spreadsheets were used to make (incorrect) financial decisions.

    And using a proper programming language prevents math bugs how?

    Also, please note that the iPhone 1st Gen wasn't that much of a smartphone, my Nokia 6600 from 2003, running Symbian, could multitask while the iPhone 1st Gen could not. Also, the Samsung F700 had 3G while iPhone 1st Gen did not.

    And the Nokia 6600 didn't have 3G, and the F700 couldn't multitask.
