I once got a chainsaw stuck in a tree trunk, 3 borrowed chainsaws later I got them all out. Thought I was going to end up with an expensive redneck garden art feature though.
With the world rapidly running out of straws to clutch what on earth are we going to have to fear? Without fear, we have no control. Personally I am afraid of revolution caused by lack of oppressive fear of stuff. Or am I just fearing....stuff?
If 50 Police officers all beat a person to dea..... Hang on this analogy isnt going to work is it. OK, If 50 Civilians set about a person and beat him/her to death and the lone person who was caught owned up to just a light tap on the arm they would still be guilty of murder/manslaughter.
If I could mod this up I would. Shame the general public don't have a clue or even care any more about what is going on around them. If you ask the majority if they are voting they instantly think X-Factor or Strictly come whatever it is now. Maybe if the Government added TV style £1.50 per minute mobile phone voting with stupid questions tagged on to each party they may get a better turn out at the next elections.
Get the Mouse division to take charge of the Micky mouse division and you might just rise from this seasons ashes and have a fighting chance with Windows 8.2+ (2.0)
In the true manner of/. of course I did not RTFA but I can add that if any company needs my home surfing habits then why not, shirley they are entitled to it. I also think that starbucks should have full access to my webcam, McDonalds need to see the inside of my shed and Microsoft (notice I did not use a $ there) really need to know how much toilet tissue I get through every week. Next thing you will be telling me is that the tin foil manufacturers are keeping tabs on just how much I have wrapped around my noggin. (think its time for bed) NN NSA
OK, Just how many coders does it take to open source a light bulb? Could these be used on things like Christmas decorations and programmed to flash and amuse people?
Hopefully someone will put me straight on this or advise a solution I have missed through lack of google-fu.
10 colleges (music and media production), 1000+ Macs, 10 mac servers, 3 Centos servers (from xserve to mac mini depending on the size of the college)
50 - 60 XP machines making up some of the lesser important areas of the colleges but with 10.6 server they join the mac provided domain with a few clicks.
I have tried a few times to find an easily deployable Linux distro to replace the Windows machines as the majority of them will do everything the students need and more, however there seems to be lacking a simple and dependable way to join any linux machine to a directory server without having to run through a vast array of config files and manually tweak them.
If there was the same sort of "wizard" to join OD or AD built in to the linux desktop as there is on both Macs (one or two clicks) and Windows (a few more) then I for one would welcome my new Linux based Overlords and embrace the linux desktop.
Regardless of whether it is OD, AD or some other LDAP server there doesnt seem to be anything established to make Linux Desktop in a small/med/large enterprise environment viable or attractive, the licence cost for us isn't a huge issue but the ongoing maintenence and admin ease of use is (who wants to be answering a barrage of support tickets when they could be gaming in their work hammock).
Build a wizard to allow easy integration into existing environments, then make it easy to manage and maintain them without learning 100 new command line packages and I think admins will take it more seriously with the knockon effect of introducing it/forcing it on to more people in the workplace which in turn may just inspire more home use.
For an enthusiast, Linux desktop is fine but for a sysadmin dealing with lots of non techie staff its a no go in so many ways, address that first and I think it may move forward of it's own accord.
Can we not fit a large laser to the ISS and have someone fly it around up there blasting it in to smaller manageable chunks (they would only need 2 rotation buttons, a thruster and a fire button). I am sure Atari patented this technology back in the 70's.
We need a slashpot/slashstarter fund, not for hand drawn games though as thats just backwards and wrong but for the gazzillion ideas that crop up on a daily basis, kickstarter my hairy hoop, all please rise and contribute to the slashpot. Or just trickle a bit in to it.
Australia are also on the band wagon too http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-22685332 Seems like every hacker the world over now spoofs "inside China" as their point of origin. VM rental in Chinese datacentres must be big business in International espionage.
I have a few domains, none of which have a website and still point to 123reg.co.uk holding page, I have no intention of building websites for them either, I purchased them solely for the email address and forwarders etc. What if the guy who owns it uses it as his primary email and has all his shizzle like fleabay, banking, paypal and other stuff on the domain? What a bummer if Microsoft win and he is left in limbo, even worse the microsoft webmonkey could even then obtain personal information via "forgot my password" shinanigans.
People in low income areas browsing/shopping/personal information is nowhere near as valuable for resale as those in wealthy areas I should imagine, I doubt they are doing it for any other reason than profit.
When we find a few earth like planets (can we patent ours and sue theirs? I digress), even if we can't travel there, we could always send off a payload of stuff to them to get evolution started and encode it with our own DNA to ensure sentient, monkey type beings eventually evolve. Then of course leave a message on earth after we have gone for all who evolve to discover.
I have an idea for a TV Show....... Oh wait... Bugger

Waiting for someone to correct that spelling........in 3...2...1

Thats about 6,973,824 double decker buses OR 2,092,147.2 olympic size swimming pools.
I don't remember the dinosaurs claiming that.
Some of the more mature slashdotters do though *cough* COBOL

They will be waiting some time for Butterfly Labs to ship the kit needed to fill it.
I propose the AC platinum green gold award for AC posting to a TLDR reply, where is my best red carpet frock.
I am still waiting for someone to bring up a straw man here.
