oh, totes. if the nsa gave you a router with a 100% backdoor for them, then you would be golden against all other threats. except... obv the nsa can be infiltrated cf snowden. and others could engineer your router backdoor. and if the nsa has a router backdoor they could potentially get access to your computer and all your bizness, not to mention the computers and bizness of everybody you communicate with.

if somebody made a phone with a proprietary connector these days, they would be laughed out of the store. either that, or they made something so incredibly awesome that it justifies the proprietary connector, and people will accept the inconvenience. that's how the market works. no need to regulate!
no, they're acting as a dumb pipe so you can use bandwidth for more youtube and gmail and all that other stuff. also, instead of just recording your actions on some websites, they can record your actions 24x7 and link it to a real person, not just an online profile. profit!

the government (as much as we all hate it) is there to keep the companies in line with general public interests. left alone, companies will do all they can to maximize profits but that rarely has anything to do with the general public good.
I'm all for mandated connectors so that we don't have to overspend on proprietary ones!
