  1. um, no on Microsoft Vows Security Commitment on Win2K · · Score: 3

I'm no expert on win2k security, but I do notice the addition of Kerberos 5, which was not in NT4. Kerberos 5 is not a "minor change".

And what is the "overall picture" you're speaking of? Sounds kinda vague.

I'd like to think that IIS5 is more secure than IIS4; if not, expect to see Barnes and Noble go down some, since they've been running win2k for months now on their servers.

The point is, nobody here acts as a mouthpiece for Microsoft or any other company; most companies wouldn't stoop so low to troll on slashdot. Stop your delusions that this site is more important than it really is. People speak their mind here; some people tend to agree with MS, and that's the way it is.

  12. Gateway and system modifications on Basic Linux Systems for the Home User? · · Score: 1

I had a problem with my old Gateway machine about 2 years ago... my cdrom drive went bad. I called tech support, and after telling them that the drive was bad in all 3 operating systems (95, nt, linux), the tech support dude put me on hold, came back two minutes later, and told me that since the machine was not in its original state, he couldn't support me.

Needless to say, my next computer was not a gateway. But back to the original point - let your grandpa be able to use the tech support that came with the machine. You might be able to reinstall the OS and fix up config files, but you won't be able to repair a cdrom drive or a busted screen, will you?

Keep linux far away from people who just need to get stuff done with a machine. It's just not ready for grandpa yet. Maybe in a few years...

Wow, I was just thinking the other day about how there should be an Ask Slashdot about coding music. And here it is, cool!

My personal favorites while banging out code include:

    - NIN (The Fragile (great!!!) and Downward Spiral)
    - Offspring (Americana)
    - Metallica (Metallica (the black album))
    - Chumbawamba (Tubthumper)
    - Red Hot Chili Peppers (random MP3s)
    - Random techno (Digital Empire 1, Orbital (In Sides), Crystal Method)

And some other stuff for more relaxed, contemplative coding sessions:
    - Dave Matthews Band (Luther College, Red Rocks, Before These...)
    - Louis Prima (Capitol Collectors Series)
    - Eric Clapton (Unplugged)
    - Bare Naked Ladies (Stunt)

I've been known to listen to Yanni as well when I'm in a really weird mood.

Please, cut the retarded anti-MS drivel. IE for Solaris is 100% free.

I have always thought that Web browsers and Office suites could be used as "platform sellers" - port web browsers and office suites to all platforms, and then tell everyone that they would work "the best" on the original platform (Windows). This way, people could migrate from their original platform to Windows (for example), and not lose their documents, training, etc.

When it comes down to it, most people don't give a crap what operating system they run. As long as that operating system runs apps that do what they want them to, people are happy.

  18. Investment in DVD? on Assorted Star Wars Tidbits · · Score: 1

I'm really wondering how much the financial investment in producing a DVD is. For example, if I'm Studio X, and I have a good film copy of a movie here, with a DTS or DD soundtrack, how much does it cost to encode and produce the DVD, including the standard array of extra goodies?

I have no idea what this costs, but I'm assuming it's not that much compared to the production cost of the movie itself. Any people in the business care to comment?

Basically, what I'm getting to, is how much it costs to throw out a movie in DVD format, and whether the resulting sales can compensate for this cost. I tend to believe that people would buy lots of copies of Star Wars on DVD, and the medium should be thought of as more of a consumer medium than some kind of archival medium. If Lucas is really concerned about the staying power of the movies, he should just digitize the movie frame for frame, store it uncompressed in a mountain somewhere, and not worry about DVD.

And his "ultimate repository" argument doesn't help to explain the fact that the trilogy exists on VHS tape, which we all know is rather lame when it comes to quality.

People want the trilogy on DVD, and they're willing to pay for it. There will be better formats eventually. But people want it now!

I'm sure the code itself is tiny, and most of it probably fits within cache. Carmack wouldn't have it any other way.

And the MS natural keyboard elite is orders of magnitude better than those cheap $10 knockoffs when it comes to quality.
