Bzzzt. Wrong!:) I 'switched' nearly 3 years ago this summer.
The one button is not for everyone. You may like it. I may like it. Others don't. Apple has the opportunity to start fresh with all new hardware in 2006. It'd be nice if the hardware had 2 buttons - or minimally was capable of having, or emulating, 2 mouse buttons for those that want it.
I think Dr. Spork was asking if the built-in mouse on the MacBook Pro has 2 buttons, or one.
This was one of my first questions when I heard about the new Powerbook replacement. I looked at the specs and pictures on Apple's website. Couldn't find anything in the specs. But the pics look like it's identical to the existing one-button mouse pad on Powerbooks.
Granted, maybe Apple thought to throw us a bone ahead of time and there's a actually a rocker or a left-right clicking difference on that pad when you click it towards the right or left. Let's hope so. I'd rather have the capability in hardware, and it be shipped to work as only one button, ala the Mighty Mouse.
What about changing the link to the user's page *on slashdot*? Ie slashdot.org/~{username}
Then, if people want to know more about the person, they can read that page. Get the person's URL, maybe even their email address if the submitter's chosen to display it.
they can have each topic ask for a URL on submission if they wanted to. It's just a topic extra definition.
I agree, I think it's a good idea. It would give you a field to possibly group similar submissions by. Once you've grouped them, then compare each to find the best one. When a submission, that is part of a group, is migrated to a story posting, the rest in the group could be auto-denied.
What I would guess is partically to blame is slashcode's interface for managing submissions. IMHO, it's terrible. Trying to comment on a submission is near impossible, there's no room to do so. You can't easily add categories to expand on the 3 that are stock. Try assigning a priority, or inheritance, to each submission. You can't.
What should I do with a good submission from a reader with a reputation?
Post it! I don't give a rats ass about a user's reputation. I'm here for the submission's quality as being part of an article. I'm here for the highly-rated comments related to that story. Nothing more.
this article will generate hundreds of pieces of mail

all product keys ms style do is piss off legitimate users
Yes, product keys are a PITA. However, as a developer and software publisher, I understand their need. People want everything for free, and they don't want to pay.
MS needs the product keys because they're not tied to the hardware. Apple is. If you're running OSX, you've bought Apple h/w. There's no screaming need for them to try and be anal about it.
MS, however, most people pirate their stuff. They didn't get the profit from the hardware sale like Apple did. I'd bet, if you looked in the 8 houses that are directly around mine, 7 of them would have illegal MS Office, and possibly MS Windows, on their machines.
the wide screen is great for multiple windows. i generally fire up 4 term windows (apple-scripted up to open, connect to whatever, cd to src directory).
however, your point about length - yes, sometimes i find i'll maximize one of those windows to full screen just to see more length-of-code.
that'd be a nice button for OSX's terminal... not maximize to screen, but max the current window to screen-height-only.
vacuum your pillows. vacuum your mattress. clean your bedroom weekly. don't eat in/on your bed.
get rid of things that can harbor dust (drapes, carpeting) or that bring on allergens (ie animals).
oh, and eat your veggies too, like mom always told you to:)
yeah, i suffered through asthma for most of my childhood. till we figured out i was allergic to just about every animal with hair there is (and we had dogs) till I was 15.
I just bought a 4th gen 60gb. (I had a 10gb 3rd gen for ~2 years). The 10gb wasn't enough to hold just the music. Top that off with calendar stuff, files, and selective (encrypted) backups, and I was always fighting for space on the old one.
Now with the 60 I have plenty of room. And I can put pictures on the thing as well! It's very very cool.
But the pictures eat up space, and eat up a ton of space if I put them on the thing at full resolution. (I have about 20,000 pictures in iPhoto, so I'm having to be selective about which photos go on the iPod).
What'll eventually come around is the home-on-the-ipod w/ encryption so you can walk up to any OSX machine with the iPod, plug it in, and there's all your stuff. But, you'll need sizeable drive to store *everything* on your iPod.
I think the point is when the laptop is up on the desk, and you're reaching around/beside it, you can easily determine the correct port just by sliding down the line till the size feels right.
See, Motorolla is learning from the Apple marketing department. It's called the upsell. Get everyone to buy the new phone as is, when you know they're really wanting a RAZR that'll do itunes.
That'll come out next year, and make everyone who bought this one want the new razr version.
funny tho that China's trying to *buy* anything that has IP rights. the lack of IP is what has been, and is, hindering China. Why invest in research over there when anyone can rip it off from you and dupe it w/ China not doing a thing about it.
I agree that America has been, and will continue to export less and less goods. But America's Intellectual Property is where the real money is. Over the long term, that's where the $ is. And if you want to play in the global game, you'll have to honor (ie pay) on that IP.
The globe's becoming so economically entwined, the next 50 years will be really interesting to see how it plays out.

Don't use the tarball. It's like 3++ years old. Grab the CVS version, mod that. Its far, far more up to date then the 2.2.6 tarball that's available.
Use nofollow for all submitter links. Period.

I don't think it's eating submissions.

I would think that's the cause of a lot of dupes.
So I guess that answers the question, "has slashcode become utterly unmaintainable?"
bah. that's a bunch of BS. slashcode's fine. if taco doesn't want the feature then he's not going to have his crew code it up. simple concept, eh?

depends on the product, and the OS
in general, however, they make it a little more difficult than just copying an app from your neighbor's hard drive to yours.

15" powerbook 1.25, fyi
exactly, and this isn't the first time such items have been requested. even before the css conversion started things like this were wanted/suggested.
maybe with more time as the css conversion's finely tuned... one can hope.
Are you referring to the stories being pushed to the left of the screen (maybe the left third of it) and the right 2/3's is whitespace?
The same effect happens with my Dell Axim X50.

so how long till a hack's released that enables the video playback feature for everyone that has the yesterday's-current 60 and 30gb photo ipod's?
It's not just the music.

Hence, 80gb...
Everyone wants to complain about bugs, no one wants to help confirm the fix.
That is the crux of it all.
You run into this at the office. You run into this with open source projects. It can be very, very frustrating.
you did mention Excel, so I guess that answers
Excel's on OSX, too.
Couldn't you use roaming profiles?

I would think that a video-playing ipod would require a purchase of the "new next gen" iPod.
Steve's only got 2 houses you know. Apple will need you to purchase another iPod!
I think the point is when the laptop is up on the desk, and you're reaching around/beside it, you can easily determine the correct port just by sliding down the line till the size feels right.

Here's some details about the slashcss conversion.
I think some of what you're asking about is answered in that.
couldn't you just use roaming profiles? if "My Documents" really points to \\servername\username\my documents then you're set.
