So you need to have the car be reliable without a human in the vicinity.
No you don't. That is a wonderful goal to strive for, but we may come to learn that our AI just isn't gonna be good enough to have a totally driverless vehicle. That is a limitation of the system and it falls clearly into the deal-with-it category instead of the ban-it-cause-Im-scared-of-it category. You are making the mistake of thinking this is black and white like Troy up there is doing. That is flawed logic.
I know you're joking but I kinda like the AI. It's very close to real life driver reactions. At first they'll jocky around trying to block your passing and all the usual racing techniques, but if you totally douche out and ram the shit out of them 2 or 3 times, they'll get freaked out, slow down, pull over, and stop trying to race you. Since my video gaming skills are vastly inferior to my real life driving skills, that's the only way I won several of the races. I am referring to GT3, 4, & 5. I haven't played the new one yet.
Nah, here in America you can get ridiculed by fellow sports car drivers. "Oh.....you bought the automatic AND V6 Mustang....yeah" It's often subtle, but it's there. Now your average grocery getting driver? Oh yeah, automatics all the way and no one bats an eyelash. I will, however, state that no matter what tranny is in a minivan, no male should ever touch one. Within a mere 6 months of driving one, you will have every bit of that spark of life sucked out of you. I know, I have a Freestar. When you see me doing the roll of shame through your hood with that 1000 mile stare and head hanging low, you can't say anything other than "That poor guy. They neutered him." It only hurts for awhile and sometimes I even forget that they aren't there anymore. Sometimes though, I'll get a moment of clarity and it's all I can do to not drive that bastard right off the nearest cliff. *tucks hand into waistband* Anyone else Married With Children?
What's your angle Basil? You have been naysaying damned near every post in this story that makes any kind of claim you don't like. Do you own some stock or something in the fuel industry? There's an ulterior motive here, I smell it.
Oh I decided that because I maintain hydraulic skids bigger than most anyone on this website has ever seen. Most of the equipment I work on is one-of-a-kind or the largest in it's category. See here.
I "argue" with you because that's what you like to do obviously. You argue in every thread on this website so I'm just giving you entertainment fodder. I was just pointing out the invalidity of the part you blockquoted. I'm not even sure what your OP was. The way this website hides posts annoys me.
I think this may be the first time I have ever seen you post and I am thankful of it because you appear to be a sociopath. You want to blame the fact that we, as workers, have been replaced by the megacorps because we demand cheap shit. Did you ever stop to think we demand cheap shit because that very same megacorp is full of greedy bastards that won't pay us a livable wage? They make record profits quarter after quarter but that's our fault the CEO needed a half million a year salary with a Platinum Parachute (cause gold is for chumps) because we wanted dollar bars of pcb soap and some shitty lead-laced crackers? The company could have just as easily made that dollar soap here in the US but instead they outsourced that shit to China because it made their bonuses bigger. Your logic amazes me. You're right, it's never the fault of the folks who have the power, control, wealth, and means, no, it's us scummy bottom feeding peons who are to blame.
You're a mechanic and this is what you believe? Higher viscosity oils do cushion parts during startup but that has nothing to do with a block heater or it's function. Block heaters do 2 primary things: reduce viscosity enough so that the oil pump can actually pump it because in extreme cold, oil turns into jelly and to keep the antifreeze from freezing. Heating of the manifold and all that other jazz you mention applies to old ass carbureted cars. The only part of a modern intake that is heated is the throttle body because ice will form on the butterfly and make it stick, but the enrichment, cabin heat, and all that other stuff has been superseded by modern electronic methods like heated O2 sensors. Your info regarding antifreeze is accurate at least but if that customer had used a block heater, he wouldn't have lifted his manifold and heads depending on just how cold it got of course.
I don't know if he's arguing with you but I will. The part you blockquoted from him is absolutely wrong. The reason you use a block heater is to reduce the viscosity of the oil because when it's really damned cold outside, oils tend to turn into jelly and won't pump. You heat it up to ensure it is runny enough to move through the system. The amount of heat soaked into the block does in a small way help with cold starting but that isn't the primary purpose for a block heater. It's to reduce oil viscosity enough to pump it and also to keep the coolant liquefied. Antifreeze, will indeed, freeze.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make a wild ass claim with nothing to back it up, so flame away if you want, BUT perhaps Switzerland doesn't have stupid high crime rates, not because everyone is military trained, but because Switzerland isn't poor.
Scaredy cat! Putting aside CVT's for a moment, all other automatics found in the majority of today's cars aren't that much different than the 60s ones. Look at the GM TH-4L60E which is (was? been awhile) used in the majority of GM vehicles that are RWD. It is almost the same tranny (with an extra gear and some solenoids replacing some manual valves) as a TH-350 which so many people know and love. Your point still applies today: If you can get it out of the car, you can rebuild it yourself. Many shops choose not to for several reasons: 1) It makes them more money. 2) It is faster. 3) Many mechanics are brilliant top notched ASE x10,000 certified...and then go stupid when they look at a transmission. So they will attempt to fix what they thought it might be, waste 6 hours doing so, and then it still doesn't work so they have to tear it back apart. That effect negates points 1 & 2. It'll also give the dealer/mechanic a bad rep which can hurt business so they just throw a whole rebuilt one in and if it doesn't work, it isn't their problem but the tranny rebuilder's. FWD transaxles are just as easy as they are functionally the same as their RWD counter parts, they just broke the gear train into 2 parallel shafts connected via chain (usually). Now about CVT's, I have not had the opportunity to work on one yet, but I'd like to. Just taking a look at some cutaways of the current Nissan model they're putting in the Maxima's and Sentra's (and probably others) it actually appears to be simpler than a standard automatic. Appearances can be deceiving of course but the overall point was, automatics of today haven't really changed much over the years much like the engine itself is pretty much the same.
Well, a shark is a fish and a stingray is a fish so that wouldn't be much of a stretch. The fact the stingray has eleventy billion horsepower should more than make up for any deficiencies. Batten down the hatches, hoist the mainsails, ARM ZEE LAZERS!

The block is filled with coolant. How would keeping the block warm NOT keep it from freezing?

Is your real life name Wile E Coyote by any chance?

So do you have any theories on what NYC did to cause this significant drop in deaths? And if so, would you suppose it would scale countrywide?
SHHHHHHHHHH! Don't rag people that throw away perfectly good stuff! How the hell am I supposed to get a 1994 Jetta for $300?
Watch out! Those shark wipers are LASERS!

Since when can a waiter afford a Prius? You aren't the guy a couple weeks ago that told me all about waiters that pull 6 figures are you?
And then robotic koreans start spraying hot grits everywhere! Slashdot trifecta!

Turn. Your. Head.
Tiburons were replaced with the Genesis Coupe. The Tibby does not exist any longer in new models. So no frikkin sharks with lasers. Sorry.

Does Narcotics Anonymous pay you to post on Slashdot? This sounds like something straight out of The Book.
The Prohibition trend is about far more than marijuana and it always has been. Don't fool yourself.
We see through your bullshit.
