You didn't call me out on any brain dead idea. I didn't propose ANY solution. I simply said that the key to prevention is learning the cause and understanding the process if you want success. You call that a brain dead idea? The American business & scientific community would beg to differ with you. That's the basis for the Scientific Method and ISO:9000 among many other types of Quality Control, Hazard Analysis, & Risk Management.
YOU made this a gun control debate. You ASSUMED (and assuming makes an ASS out of U and ME) I was talking about guns. I never even mentioned a gun. You're a Thread Hijacker and declare you to be an Internet Terrorist. How do you like dem apples?
I love how out of everything I wrote, you thought you found a weakness in my armor with the word majority. You failed. The US had slavery. This is a fact. It was not condoned by everyone, sure, but it took almost 100 years (1776-1861) before enough people finally got fed up with it enough to revolt. That is another fact. There were enough people who wanted it to remain the status quo that they started a civil war over it! Sure it was State's Rights: The State's right to own slaves. You can spin it all kinds of ways but that's just how it is. The results speak for themselves.
Even today, there are plenty of crimes that you can be convicted of for only KNOWING it was happening. Sure you may not have killed that guy, but you were there, you saw it, and you did nothing to stop it. That's accessory to murder, conspiracy to murder and a whole bunch of other crimes. A majority of the population knew and condoned the use of slaves for nearly 100 years. Finally that majority became the minority and we ousted that barbaric practice. That is a dark and evil blight on our nation and we should fight tooth and nail to ensure heinous things like that NEVER become reality again.
When I hear people screaming [Citation Needed], I prepare 2 responses. One, you are ignorant or lazy and I drop some education on ya. Or Two, you are being a fecetious troll, trying to make me appear ignorant so you can discredit me because you don't actually have any kind of logical argument to thwart my assertations. You failed on that account. I got history on my side.
I didn't mention anything about the second amendment. We were talking about ways to prevent future crimes and I never once even typed the word "gun." I am not Leftwing. There is no party that represents me, though in social matters I am liberal. I hate the Fuck You I Got Mine mentality that is destroying us. I want to help raise up our nation, including assholes like you. I don't necessarily want gun control, I want the US to stop being the world's #1 incarcerator of its citizens, to rehabilitate instead of seek vengeance, and to return to the glory the old timers tell me stories about. I LOVE me some Constitution. It was a pretty good document as it was laid out, and I will argue TOO well written, since evidently the powers that be can't get what they want without utterly ignoring, twisting, or rewriting it! I served in this nation's military. Don't tell me I hate my country. And of course if you were too busy flying high in heaven "Archangel" then you need to come back down here to Earth and THANK ME for defending your right to spew your vitriol in my face.
Well it's a good thing that I'm not a rightwing elitist-individual. I'm socially liberal, believe in equal rights for all, and think that it is indeed those asshats at the top who are fucking us over. I said I wasn't poor. I'm not rich either- barely middle class. When did looking out for your fellow man, asking people not to judge one based on his race, religion, color, or creed become a RIGHT WING doctrine? Keep changing those definitions to suit your beliefs. If all you can do is call me names, I think I've won here.
Since you did go Godwin, let me say this: There was a time here in America pre 1865, when the majority of (white) men thought that those of African descent and those of the female gender (heaven forbid if you were both female and African!) were inferior folks and no better than property. Just because a majority feels something is right and good does not mean it is. That is why very few pure Democracies have stood the test of time. This is also the whole reason for the existence of the scientific method. You need empirical evidence, true proof if you will, that something is or is not. Emotions fool us all the time. The laws of physics are a cold hearted bitch though.
Also be aware when you say "predispositon to violence" you walk that razor's edge of falling prey to stereotypes. There is still plenty of conjecture and debate regarding Nature vs. Nurture because that happens to be an area where easy math formulae such as E=mc^2 just don't seem manifest. For instance, I grew up poor. I am not poor any longer. In your words, "most other rational thinking people" often throw the stereotype around that if you grew up poor then you will be poor your whole life, that you will end up in jail as a criminal most likely for drugs or gang violence, an so on. A person should not be judged on where they came from, grew up, race, etc. Their own merits speak all on their own. Look at that.
I have not researched this particular killer in any detail. This is actually the first time I have heard of him. However, his military career was evidently impeccable, all previous evaluations of him seemed normal, there were no issues with law enforcement at any time previous to the shooting then up to that point, "most rational people" would have called him an upstanding citizen and hero. But he knew something was wrong, he knew he was fucked up, and when he did the rational thing and sought medical help, he got turned away. That tumor continued unabated and we have known for ages that tumors can cause you to go crazy, lose motor functions, sieze, etc. Well look what the evidence shows us: a man that wasn't crazy, who goes crazy, and upon autopsy find a tumor in his brain in an area that we now know today controls your aggressive behaviors. That's a walking, quacking duck right there. So let's call it a duck ummkay?
I can tell why you seem so incensed and defensive in your response. You feel that by girlintraining's & my stance that we will be soft on criminals, that we will excuse thier behavior, and by being this way "justice" won't be served (check out her paragraph on bad things just happening and revenge). You may even believe that if we can't blame the bad man for being bad then we may blame you as in "society failed him." Speaking for myself, I can say that the act itself should not be excused. He killed alot of people and that is a heinous thing. However, those family's that lost people that day, still grieve today even though justice was served by his death. The best way to honor them, and make them feel that thier sacrifices were not in vain, would be to prevent this from happening again but as girl pointed out you simply can't effectively do that until you understand the problem.
So to answer your final question, why should we believe her over consensus? We shouldn't. We should give them equal consideration with the facts that we know. I know science and I know how mob rule works and mob rule is the last thing one should defer to.
The Buffalo Nx00 series (mine is an N900 I think) also uses DD-WRT and actively advertises it. In basic mode, it is a Buffalo branded implementation but there is a variable to set which puts it in advanced DD-WRT Mode. It was the primary driver in my decision to purchase said router. My knowledge at the time was that Buffalo only did backup solutions & SANs but went out on a limb and bought it anyway. I have never been more happy. Buy one today!
I apologize for any negativity I attempted to infer by the final wording of my post (though the actual debate material I feel is my honest assement). I wrote it before you I got your last reply to the car article. I thought we were still taking sniper shots. Can we be/. buddies?
Oh the epic, award winning documentary, Team America starring Alec Baldwin, has already taught us this is typical for NK and if we don't try to contain this threat then there may be a severe chance that Mt Rushmore would suffer. Also I do believe the UN is currently authoring a VERY stern letter.
The people in charge claimed Iraq was GOING to do some attacks with WMDs that didn't actually exist so we preemptively struck. You can't use that card too many times too near each other or The People will know you're full of shit so we have to wait for an attack first and then retaliate so we appear noble and justified. Also why do you think that is not what happened in Afghanistan? So we have OBL's admission on tape that his AQ group perpetrated the attacks. As everyone has already noticed it was an absolutely horrible idea to go to war with an entire country when all we needed to do was send in the Seals or other eilite units to take him out. That's how we ended up bagging him anyway. He wasn't even in the country we went to war with! Both of the invasions were overall a failure. We used a sledghammer when what we needed was a scalpel. If Belize is making that shit as he claims then we don't have to invade Belize, we could send in the Rangers and if Hez claims the Boston shit then we send the Green Berets in to take out Hez leaders.
I personally do not think it was any sort of false flag/conspiracy nonsense though. If it was a terror attack, then it was just a terror attack. My money is on a disenfranchised & discarded youth who finally lost his job and everything he/she held dear because of this shitty economy and sees the uselessness of our politicians in action and society in general saying, "Fuck you, I got mine."
You really like those "I'll just leave this here" type posts don't you? I mean you're just asking questions.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Misquoting the Amendment does not help with your credibility either. These guys are rules lawyers so don't give them any ammunition to use against you.
Your quote btw sounds like the New International Version of the Constitution as opposed to the King Washington version, if you catch the reference:)
I have bad reading comprehension? I have quite astute reading comprehension.
What you posted claimed Google was telling us the reasons why the system wasn't up to par; yet it didn't say that at all. All Google said was it had 300k accident free miles and drove a blind man around town. That second paragraph isn't from Google, that's the author's observations that get summarized into a human is better than any computer driver (last phrase) specifically at high speed. You also stated in a post further up that you might putter around at 25 in one but you wouldn't even consider the freeway at 75.
I saw what you did there. You basically rolled in and did a "I'll just leave this here." You didn't say anything but by chosing that particular paragraph you were trying to IMPLY that the car isn't worth a damn at high speeds and that computers just won't be as good as a human driver. Also since you didn't actually say anything, you have pausible deniability (which you did deny saying anything in the response). That's the same kind of weasly debating the talking heads on Fox do when they say, "I'm not claiming anything, I'm just asking questions," even when such questions are loaded. You are right, in reference to the quote, YOU didn't say anything. You just posted the part that implied it for you. The entire article is just one big bunch of negatives on why this just isn't feasable. I can't believe MIT even put their name on it.
You'd love to work with me! Especially since if our management started trying to pull some BS, I'd be the first one to call them on it and I'd stand with you to ensure we don't get screwed over. If you fall, then there's no reason to assume I wouldn't be next. The people at the top want people like you and I squabbling amongst ourselves so that they can do what they want while we aren't looking. Surely you have noticed this.
You told me the other day that I was the type of person you wouldn't ever want to work with. Sounds to me that it is, in fact, YOU that are the type of person that *I* wouldn't want to work with. You post alot here and even get modded up quite a bit but all I ever hear you say is "nope, can't be done." How is it that you keep a job if all you ever tell your boss is the ways something can't get done?
Just because this technology doesn't fit every single possible hair brained and unlikely event that you can think of, doesn't mean it should be scrapped. There are plenty of technologies that don't fit all use cases yet there are products that are still made and you use every day. NASA didn't go to the Moon on the very first launch. It blew up on the pad as I recall and killed the astronaut. The first iterations of self driving cars ARE going to have some accidents. Someone may die in one. People already die in human piloted accidents. The computer has way better odds than a human at avoiding that outcome. The fact is that since it couldn't possibly detect the fact that an underpass is flooded, under 18 feet of snow, while on fire and being bombarded by meteors doesn't mean we should not keep working on this technology until it finally works. As an engineer, I commend Google and others such as Mercedes for working on this. They are busy getting shit done and truly innovating while you're just sitting at your desk naysaying.
People like you are why we can't have nice things. Why does it have to be 100% or nothing? If they can make a car that can navigate the Interstate on a nice sunny day then myself and many others would buy it in a heartbeat. What happens if it isn't a sunny day? Then you don't drive it in autopilot! Please don't tell me you're one of the people who uses their cruise control in a down pour! If you do, you're running a big risk of a hydroplaning or limited visibility accident. So what do you do there? You turn it off!
People like you demonstrate what is wrong with America today. You want it all or no one can have any of it. Everything does not have to be a dichotomy. Besides being either/or, it could also be both or neither! Perhaps even some combinations in-between! If no one even attempts these experiments then nothing will ever get built. This work is "True Innovation (tm)" and not some crap like removing a start button. Stop it with the naysaying already!
1) I hear this alot and the only thing I can say is, why does it matter? If you have the desire and pride and whatever you call it to need a job to realize a goal in your life maybe you should start your own company. For others like me I just want to get paid. I couldn't care less if the project got done. Today I will fix this thingy and tomorrow I will fix that thingy, it doesn't matter at all to me. And don't think this means I'm a freeloader. I'll work to get that check but whatever you do with my work doesn't concern me. Also the whole can't fire an incompetent union worker thing is so 1970. Union members get sacked all the time. No company these days can fire anyone, union or not, for fear of a lawsuit. They have to build a good solid case and if a case is solid the union guy can get axed as well. That's my theory why there are so many incompetent middle managers. If they can't get the job done just promote them to somewhere else.
2) See above, as long as the paychecks keep coming I don't care how slow things are.
3) Benefits will/should include: Getting paid for every minute you actually make them money. None of this 40 hours pay but you need to work at LEAST 50 hours a week. No more death marches. No more random layoffs to make the stock price look good before the end of the fiscal year or because they're about to go IPO. Protection against other workers who just don't fucking like you for whatever reason. You can't be singled out cause your boss hates that you're an Indian or can't single out her for promotion cause she has epic tits. Loyalty to the company is rewarded. That is what the seniority is about. You stuck with, say Microsoft, even when things were shitty (windows 1.0) but now that they hit it big due in part to that awesome filesystem you helped program (ntfs, part of NT) you need to GTFO. You were only 2 days from retirement too! But fuck it, free market. This is not morally right. There are many other benefits but I think you know that. Your whole post is fecitious.
People throw that "standing on the shoulders of giants" thing around but do you know who the giants stand on? That's us minions at the bottom. We aren't asking for the whole damned pie, we just want our piece cause we actually earned it. That's not the entitlement people scream about, we aren't riding welfare just sucking off the teet, we earned it fair and square. Though we will have to if the Makers (who really are the Takers) have their way about it.
Dude, I know what you're saying. I used to think that as well but that whole putting your pride into your work thing will rarely net you anything. You're using that contracting company to jump from job to job and I would do the same if I wanted to roam on my own terms. You run over to Whatever Tech Inc and save thier ass and sure they will call you back for more. Nothing wrong there. But why should you have to? Maybe instead of calling you to save them yet again, they should hire you to run the damned thing. Then the place will be fire proof! But no, that fire is out, the contract over so get the fuck out until we screw shit up again and we expect you to put extra pride into it next time or we'll call another firefighter. You swear you aren't replaceable and think you got them over the barrel (to charge your higher prices) but one day you won't get that call. That isn't a way to be treated after putting pride and passion into your work. The only person who cares about that is you, and you would be better off just making your own company. With the attitude you have I imagine they will be good products.
I don't know you. Perhaps you like bouncing from job to job. Maybe you really are a Rock Star. Statistics would say otherwise though, and as for me and people like rsilvergun, we might like some stability in our lives, the ability to plan some things, and not be cast aside when Whatever Tech's stock price dropped 1%. Keep doing it your way, it's obviously working but don't deny the rest of us the ability to make our money our way-- that's just job protectionism in the opposite direction. If you're a Rockstar Firefighter you'll still get them contracts whether we do the daily gruntwork or not.
That wasn't strictly the fault of the Unions. Those companies that the union workers made rich, turned around and bought congress and got laws passed. You remember Ross Perot? That big sucking sound he warned about was NAFTA and that's why you lost all your jobs. The minute they could, Ford & Chevy ran for the border and it doesn't matter at all how much you try to strike against that, the law is on their side and judges will tell the cops to make you go home.
As you know people on/. will do all sorts of things to discredit posts and nitpicking small things to make you look ignorant. In an effort to repel these trolls, I have taken it upon myself to help other Slashdotters. I see you post on/. all the time so you may find this useful in a future article. Take my advice or not, it's up to you. I mean no disrespect. When referring to the color temperature of a light source, the proper unit of measure is the Kelvin. The Kelvin does not have the word degree attached to it. So in your post, you bought a 2700K & a 3000K lamp (bulb is also not the correct term, fyi). Saying that you have a 3000 degree lamp, to most laymen, brings about an image of a lamp that is actually at a temperature of 3000 degrees! If a layman hears 3000K lamp, then they will either not know what a Kelvin is or they will know you are referring to it's color temperature. They will most certainly not think it's actually 3000 degrees which is the important part. If a professional hears a 3000 degree lamp, then they will just throw your statements out as bullshit (but at least they already know it can't be 3000 degrees!). You have a 4 digit ID so historically you're supposed to sound like one of the wise old wizards that everyone shuts up to listen to. I hope this helps. Knowing is half the battle!
It isn't just a 20% pay cut. I wish it were for me & 206 others at my base, it's a 100% paycut as in we got laid off. The furloughs are only available to people who are actual goverment employess. Most bases however are ran on the backs of contractors and us contractors don't get a furlough option. Believe me, I would rather work 4 days a week than ZERO days a week, especially in this still floundering economy.
I accept the reality that no one owes me anything and I don't think Blue Trane said anything to that effect. He just threw out a solution and your assertation that we give everyone Ferrari's, hookers, and blow did nothing to actually state why that may or may not work. I see nothing wrong with that proposal and I'll tell you why: It's the DECENT thing to do. You seem to to want to polarize the situation into the usual dichotomy of the haves and have-nots but why? Why can't we have both? It's not an either/or. You can also have both or neither plus a lot of combinations in between. With your line of thinking, one can conclude that you would be ok with folks who can't or won't work starve to death. I guess that's fine logically but it's a damned sorry way to be as human being. Fuck the rest of the world you got yours. There will come a day, if it hasn't already, where you WILL fall on hard times and you WILL need help from your fellow man and it would be a damned shame if society turned it's back on you and left you to die. But because there are some decent folks here in America, like Blue Trane and myself, you will have Social Security, Unemployment, Food Stamps, Section 8, Daycare, and whole host of other social programs to save you from certain doom. Would it be so damned hard for you to help support these (and I mean TRULY support them, just cause you are forced to pay your taxes for them doen't mean you actually care about it positively) if for no other reason than the chance that you or someone you love would need them? Not only that but again, decent loving people would and if you are a Christian then you already know what Jesus would do. Why do you have to be so snobby with the 'I worked so hard so poor folks are beneath me' attitude? And let's address that sense of entitlement you allude to. I mean you do work so hard to get where you are so wouldn't you feel angry if your boss didn't give you that raise, or that bonus or whatever you think you are entitled to? You're human. I know at various times in your life you did your thing so you thought you should reap the benefits. You can't say that you haven't cause all humans do. That is entitlement and so you should stop before the hypocrisy makes you look like a vile individual.
Who ran on Change? When did this site come in to existence? Why do lawmakers always feel like they are the ones that have to respond to it? This was a site promised by Pres. Obama to make the gov more transparent and it became a real functioning entity once he was in office. The fact that it is a privately owned company means nothing. People make themselves privately owned companies. The reason it is a privately owned company is exactly everything your response was about. It was so that if something unpopular, bad, or if the thing tanked, it couldn't be trotted out and used as a weapon against the Democrats. See they can say just what you said: It's a privately owned company, we didn't have anything to do with it and we do not share the views of it's members. This was one of those things, like alot of Americans, I WANTED to believe. I wanted that more transparent government but this particular attempt at it has turned into a farce and we all know it. It makes me sad.
I don't know which news sites you've been watching (ok I do) but when someone whines about someone getting a free ride and that they need to have something taken away and taxed, that is usually a fiscally conservative talking point and not "left wing tunnel vision." A left wing talking point would consist of not taking it away and taxing it but to tax everyone and give everyone "free lunch." Remember right wing is Makers vs Takers and left wing is Take from the Rich to Give to the Poor. I also don't think his outrage is faux perse, he's probably one of the few conservatives at his university (as you pointed out they do tend to be more liberal) and as we all know they are huge hypocrites since they suck off the gov teet as much as the poor folks do (he works for a state uni). Don't misunderstand me, I'm not disagreeing with you at all. I think your post has scored what it deserves. I'm just pointing out that your default reaction was to blame the blue team when it doesn't appear to be their fault. Neither side has to make up things, there's plenty of real outrage to go around.
And that is why no one takes Change.org serious. You are using a government website designed for you to petition the governement about important government policies and you ask them to make SyFy (a non gov corporation) bring back a TV show. Just add that to the Deathstar petitions and the pink unicorns for everyone. I understand that they dont actually care and it's a farce but openly mocking it just gives them 'evidence' they can use to discredit the whole process. I'm surprised it hasnt been shutdown yet cause of trolls asking for stupid shit.
Besides SGU sucked. You know it, I know it, everyone else knows it. There was a reason it was shutdown. It had wooden actors, a dickbag scientist no one cared for, played the oh no we're gonna die but suddenly saved at 0:02 seconds theme too much. You can't do that every damned episode but they sure trotted it out. And then when the writers realized they couldn't actually make a show interesting enough about the people stuck just on this ship, they decided to spice it up a bit and threw out a magic thingy that let's them take over bodies back in the real world so they could add "drama" oooo who's bangin who's wife tonight? I just have to know! That show was horrible and deserved to be cancelled just like SG1 did once O'Neill left and the muslims, excuse me- Orai, showed up.
Please stop encouraging our Congress to waste more money on useless things.
You didn't call me out on any brain dead idea. I didn't propose ANY solution. I simply said that the key to prevention is learning the cause and understanding the process if you want success.
Can we be /. buddies?
Bradgoodman, let me tell you something you might not know about me. I SMOKE ROCKS.
Oh the epic, award winning documentary, Team America starring Alec Baldwin, has already taught us this is typical for NK and if we don't try to contain this threat then there may be a severe chance that Mt Rushmore would suffer. Also I do believe the UN is currently authoring a VERY stern letter.
In America, the Beaver Bean would definitly be a reference to the clitoris...or the name of a super sweet punk band!
Your quote btw sounds like the New International Version of the Constitution as opposed to the King Washington version, if you catch the reference :)
You post alot here and even get modded up quite a bit but all I ever hear you say is "nope, can't be done."
How is it that you keep a job if all you ever tell your boss is the ways something can't get done?
As you know people on /. will do all sorts of things to discredit posts and nitpicking small things to make you look ignorant. In an effort to repel these trolls, I have taken it upon myself to help other Slashdotters. I see you post on /. all the time so you may find this useful in a future article.
Nah, he forgot that. Didn't he tell you!
