It seems like most of their advertising is "preaching to the choir" - banner ads on Linux related sites, Linux Journal, etc.
What I'd like to see VA (and Penguin, etc.) do is start taking out big 8-page glossy ads in Computer Shopper. THAT would get people's attention.:-)
Maybe spend 2 or 3 pages extoling the virtues of Linux in general, then the rest of the ad talking about their systems and all the quality and support they build into them.
Wow, that matches my software philosophy precisely. Anything that MUST run as root MUST be open source or I won't touch it.
I also would love to see a Web page detailing the current state of each company's support for Linux. Perhaps this is a good Linux International project? Or maybe LWN?
How about having a story every week with a link to the LWN commerce page. That would combine the best of both worlds - allow LWN to do what they do best, and allow the Slashdot community to comment and rant about it. LWN's page does not have a forum like Slashdot's.
We *did* have a lunar eclipse last summer. Late July I think. I saw it well (but had to get up at 4 in the morning). It wasn't total, but still cool.
I do hope we get a break in the clouds tonight. The beginning of this week was perfectly clear, now the clouds are in and it's raining. CRAP. But it's supposed to clear off again, so maybe there's hope.
I also use Datek and generally like it. It does occasionally have severe slowness problems when the market is moving fast (at least it did the morning after the October 97 mini-crash).
Cool features on Datek include the Streamer and Island Book Viewer, which let you view stock prices as they move, and see all the orders on NASDAQ stocks.
Options - I wrote Datek recently asking them about options, and they said they're working on it, but couldn't announce a date when it will be available. We can always hope it will be soon. I'm thinking of openning an E-trade account to get options capability.
IIRC there is another total solar eclipse in the US from north to south in 2026. It will roughly follow the Mississippi river I believe.
The 2017 eclipse should be good. August is a great month in Oregon, and I may climb Mt. Jefferson that day.:-) That eclipse goes west to east pretty much across the whole country.
Microsoft was almost forced to invest in Borland as a settlement for some lawsuit. I remember reading a quote by a Borland (I REFUSE to call them Inprise) official about how cool it was to get millions of dollars of investment money from your biggest competitor.:-)
This is a good thing, and nothing to worry about. MSFT might make a bit of money from Borland's success, but they don't have any say in the company's operation.
Too bad solar eclipses can't last that long. *sigh*
I'm waiting for the 6/21/01 total solar eclipse in Zaire/Zimbabwe/Madagascar. It *should* be a good one. In western Zaire totality goes right over a huge game park, with good weather prospects and almost 4 minutes of totality. I plan to be there, and can't wait!
I certainly noticed and I don't "track the moon". Actually it's amazing that it's visible at all. Washington State decided to clear up a bit for a couple days.:-)
and I *love* not having income tax. I get to keep so much more of my money! And any big ticket items I purchase (computers, etc) will be either from Oregon or over the Internet.
SCREW YOU MONEY SPENDING LIBERALS! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I live near Portland, and indeed, the Powells Technical Bookstore is INCREDIBLE! I could spend a day there! Unfortunately, they don't have discounts on much.
and plaster it all over the Internet. Other people can also tell when freedom is being taken away. They can be made to understand that the future of innovation (did I really just say that word?) and competition on the Internet is at stake.
How will that patent affect AMZN and all the other sites that use it? Certainly some action needs to be taken against THAT company (I forget who they are and what they do) if they persist in enforcing it.
And BTW, I fully support the AMZN boycott. It's high time to do something about patents, and boycotting seems to be the most we can do. RMS is a genius!
Well, yeah, it's ridiculous. But this is the stock market. Common sense doesn't apply here.:-)
Actually, VA is VERY popular in two areas - big expensive monster computers and web sites. And now service. They will do well.
Look at DELL. It's gone up like mad, and I think VA will probably follow. Of course, it already did to a certain extent, but I think it will continue. Expect VA at $400 within the next few months.
I saw that one coming. bought last February at 4 1/4. Unfortunately I sold it last week at 19 1/2. Oh well. I still did well, just not as well as it could have been...
probably not a good investment now

I'm not buying at this price. It's just a bunch of web sites. Sure, some of them are cool, but it looks like banner ad prices will be trending downwards. I bet it goes down to $30, maybe even $20.
Wondering when I'll be able to short ANDN,
Micah
They should have priced higher to begin with

They should have known this would be a hot IPO and figured out earlier how much they could get. I have a feeling this is going to get a lot of people ticked off at them...

Microsoft will continue to charge UK schools money for their operating systems!
The sun will come up tomorrow!
Perhaps viewing this thing would make a good second or third date???? :-)
:-(
Of course, I'm in western Washington where it will probably be obscured by clouds...

I wish. You can't short sell IPOs for a while (I dunno how long).

How in the HECK did that comment get a score of 1??????
Rob, I think we have a Slashdot bug here. An AC posted a first post message, and it got a score of 1!
Their crappy Linux player has been in ALPHA for HOW long now? Didn't they promise to release a Beta G2 player by the end of the year?
No, I haven't forgotten. And I'm sick of RA crashes. If they fail to deliver on that promise I will be quite upset with them.
Perhaps tell them you bought some things online... like a couple books or something... but conviniently ignore the VA Linux system you buy. :-)

Not a bad thought, but I'll need to make a bit more than $20K to consider that. :-)
Moving to Mexico would be *really* cool... aaahhh.... mmmm....

I didn't get it. They promised to call around 7AM. At 8 I called them and confirmed the order, no sweat.
But they *should* have kept their promise to call.
Other than that, though, I think DB did a great job on the whole thing. They were reachable and cooperative throughout the whole ordeal.
