It's been around for a long time, it's how you use your phone to pay for things. I think it might be how credit cards that let you tap to pay work. That's basically what it is. You can program it to interface with other things but you can use it to turn your hand into a virtual business card. Tap someone's phone and they get your contact info. Tap the credit card scanner and you can pay for things. But dude people have been hyping up NFC since 2012 and it's still around six years later. in tech years it should have college ready children by now. It's not unreasonable to expect a reader here to know what it is.
YouTube used to have a movies section with a ton of free classic movies. Most of them not as recent as Hackers but there was lots of movies across many genres. They then disappeared it and now they're back with more current films and ads.

If you don't already know Linux, it depends on if you have the time and desire to learn the differences. A Windows machine is the default "easy" choice.
A Linux machine is going to require relearning some things, and you will probably run into hiccups along the way as you try to do stuff. This is true for any system you are unfamiliar with. There are other restrictions as well. If you *need* to be able to use specific software that isn't available for Linux, then your choice is basically made for you.
But I would first plan out your priorities. I personally have one machine for work, and one for games, and recommend others do the same. If you have no machine at all, then prioritize the work machine, for obvious reasons. You may not be able to play the newest triple-A games with it, but there is plenty of stuff that you can play.
