  1. That explains it on Judge Conflicted Interest in MPAA/2600 DeCSS Case? · · Score: 4

Not that Kaplan has exceeded the bounds of judicial conduct, but he has been very antagonistic towards 2600 & their lawyers. It might also explain why he didn't dismiss Garbus when the plaintiffs asked him to - he's looking forward to handing him a high-profile lost case.

  2. Well, yeah on Are Bad Licenses Good For The Community? · · Score: 3

In the same way that really repressive dictatorships are good for democracy.

While the SSH people are perfectly within their rights to release future versions under a more restrictive licence, one questions the business logic of pissing off your entire user base.

In part, the article seems to fall into the "OSS can only copy ClosedSS" trap, although he backs away from that in the end without providing an example of OpenSSH's innovation.

    A standard would be good.

We should all join FIN, and coopt it in the name of competition and real innovation.

    "Dear Senator,
I am writing to you on behalf of the local branch of the Freedom to Innovate Network, who would like to see senior Microsoft executives forced to work the helpdesk for their crappy products."

  4. Domain registration & distributed DNS on Afternic Sues ICANN, Claims Unfair Treatment · · Score: 3

Disclaimer: I don't know what I'm talking about.

It seems to me that instead of having all this ICANN accreditation nonsense, any authoratitive DNS server should be world-writable, with some form of digital signature required to update an existing domain, but unregistered domains go to anyone who requests them. Billing could be done post-facto, or not at all.

Further, why not scrap the whole DNS heirarchy? Every ISP has at least two DNS servers, and they all talk to the upstream DNS servers until you get to the root servers. DNS should be made peer-to-peer, not top down, and the need for ICANN and it's 5M$/year budget goes out of the window.

I don't want to knock the book at all, but have no compunctions about lambasting this review ;-)

My [non-techie] wife found it amusing, which is unusual for geek humour. I liked it, but since I check User Friendly almost daily, I didn't see anything I hadn't seen before.

Correction: there is a new joke in the book, and it is the book. This is an O'Reilly "In a Nutshell" book, right down to the Colophon: "The animal on the cover is a Dust Puppy". I can't help but think that if IDG weren't such assholes about their trademarks, this could just as well have been "Evil Geniuses for Dummies".

Thanks to the reviewer for pointing out the missing text in the Windows refund storyline. I didn't get it, and didn't think to check the website to see if the print version was accurate.

Isn't it Mike who is haunted by the giant cola can? The reviewer says it's AJ, but I'm pretty sure it's not.
