Copyright and Patients are all about the differences in the cost of production and duplication. Many products are very expensive to produce. Software, electronics, music, books, movies, and TV Shows are all examples but are easy to duplicate. Copyrights and patent law allow the cost of production to be spread all the users of the item produced. It may cost millions of dollars to make a wireless networking chip. The company then makes the money back by charging everyone that buys it just a few dollars. The same is true of say video editing software or a movie. Yes the law is in many ways broken as far as protecting the rights of the consumer and the destruction of Public domain needs to be reversed but copyright law does actually protect those that risk the most and work the hardest. What most people on slashdot really want is free stuff. They see that they can take it and get away with not paying and want to justify it. They then wrap it in a fiction that they are all about freedom. There a few that don't fit that category but for the most part the Slashdot discusion of copyright vs piracy has all the moral weight of millionaire baseball players striking for better pay from billionaire team owners.
Hey that gives me an idea on how to solve professional sports strikes. If any professional sport strikes prevents a single game from being played all the owners forfeit 25% all their their TV, merchandising, and sponsorship revenue for the season and it goes to the teams home town school district. The Players loose 25% of all their pay for the season and it goes to the teams home town food kitchens and pantries. If it goes to a second game it is another 25% and so on. I bet you will never have another strike again.
I find peoples comments on copyrights and IP really annoying. Yes we live in the world where a lot of things are very expensive to produce but cheap to duplicate. That is why we have copyright law. To protect the investment in production of this material. I am not going even pretend that there isn't problems with copyright law. We without a doubt need to reform it and make rules about things like fair use, reduce the terms back down to be for the Disney law took place and so on. copyright laws also need to have consumers rights put into them. The Music and Movie industries a whole are out of control. I agree with all of that but people have got to stop confusing production costs with duplication costs. Even things like CPUs are cheap to duplicate compared with the cost of producing them. That is no different from software, movies, music, and now books. Copyright and patent law protects investment in RnD. Yes software should be protected by copyright not patents without a doubt but the laws need to be reformed not destroyed or ignored.
Then shouldn't the prize had been awarded to the American voter and the President Obama besides you are creating a confortable fiction for yourself. The Nobel committee said it was for "The Nobel Peace Prize 2009 was awarded to Barack H. Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"" Nothing to do about racial barriers. It was 100% political and 100% because he wasn't Bush. It was nothing but pure silliness oh and Gitmo is still open.
Well look at the peace prize. How did a newly elected president that hadn't even served long in federal government get it? Simple it was a "We didn't like Bush" award. And in the end troops still in Iraq, troops still in Afghanistan, and a new air war in Libya.
Exactly there are lot of professions left out. There is no Nobel prize for Astronomy, geology, or any of the engineering fields. They have their own like the Collins trophy for Aerospace. Computer science is no more deserving than those fields.
funny but I don't. I have been using computers since 1982 and I am sick of tool bars. They take up a ton of screen space and frankly tend to be too large. Some you can customize but not all and how many people ever do? But then On say netbeans they are actually pretty dang useful but on a browser or word processor they are just about useless most of the time. But then you can go too far. I want my drop down menus still but tool bars? and a bunch of useless info? Let me turn that junk off. Tool bars? When I am typing why do I need to see them. Make them fade away until I grab the mouse. Way too much of that stuff is nothing but gee haws that get int he way of getting work done IMHO.
"I just want a browser that is efficient and does lots of cool things that make the browsing experience more productive." "I don't want social-fucking-everything,"
Umm maybe you don't understand that is what a large number of people think of as a cool thing that makes the browsing experience more productive.
Really why the anger and annoyance. Just get Firefox and pick and choose your plug-ins. And frankly Chrome is really nice as well as a browser IMHO.
Powerful computer and crappy monitor just is not right. I guess people are still in the muscle car stage of computers. They want a big engine but ignore the suspension, brakes, and frame. I guess I am getting old but I want the smallest computer I can get that will do what I want for three years. Oh and I want it silent.
Well that is just too bad. Most computers are vastly over powered in the CPU department but most could use a bit better GPU than what Intel offers. Honestly a cheap I3 or one of AMDs duel core is overkill. I compile code and a Core II Duo is fine for IOS development and even an old P4 is doing just fine for Java development. Frankly for most people they should get an inexpensive dual or tri-core cpu. A good integrated GPU like from nVidia or AMD a lot of RAM and a good monitor. The CPU is just loafing most of the time.
Not exactly. Let's say someone gets a password file though social engineering. You detect the breach and have two weeks to get everybody to change their password or move sensitive data off the system. So if it took you a week to discover the hack you have a week to migrate data and people. If you have 10 minutes to crack the passwords your in a world of hurt. It is a two edged sword. The more expensive the hash the more time it takes to break but the impact of each login on the system also goes up. Not an issue with a website that only gets a few tens of thousands of logins a day but when you get into the millions of logins a day it could become an issue.
Wow your almost tragic. So much going for you and so likely to be wasted. If you no all of your failings they why not correct them. You do not have to be conform to be mature and you don't have to get ride of your negative attributes. Just remember that life is long and youth is not. Toys are fun and I love them as well but people are better. Taking pride in yourself is good taking pride in your failings is not. Make an effort to fix what you do not like and keep what you do and then you will be an adult and frankly those are few and far between.
Yes it is but it may be a not so bad idea right now. I know a family that runs a small business. He installs tile for a living. They use QuickBooks for their accounting, Email and Google Calander to handle job. They have a full PC and they don't really need it. Another example was an older couple that used their PC just for Facebooking with their family, email, and eTrade for investments. There is a large segment that now really do us their computer as nothing but an internet terminal. I do question the idea of not having native apps and living in an all HTML5 and JavaScript world. Why not go back to Java then. The performance issues of Java are really a thing of the past and where mostly myth even then. Using a JIT and an ISA should be faster than JavaScript. The real truth is that with things like GoogleDocs, Google and Amazon Music, and online services like etrade, Quicken, and others that are starting up all the time. The actual need for native apps is less and less and for a subset of the world they could function just fine with only an browser based system. Of course we are then falling back the world that the creators fo Mutlaics dreamed of where computing was a utility and away from the micro revolution where everybody has control of their own computer.
A. You where actually very mature and responsible at 14. or B. You are a failure but you such a failure that you mistake wealth and position for actual merit.
Wahh... 18 isn't an average it is a deadline. The idea is that everyone should be an adult by 18. Think of it like a term paper if you will. Some will finish it early some will get to on time if you don't get it done by the deadline you fail.
I never said irresponsible. I said self indulgent. There is a big difference. One can be responsible and self indulgent. I have no idea if this person is responsible or not.
Well... "Again, I don't see how that would be unique to capacitors in the frame. Seems that if you have a collision, and gas is released, -that's- the dangerous part." They are talking about using body panels. So any impact could cause a breach. Ever see a wreck where no body panel has been damaged? Take a look at a gas tank and you will see how small it is and how they put the "frame" around it to protect it. There that should show the difference. and now. "And power locks, and power to the mirrors. So... we agree this is probably not actually an insurmountable problem that engineers would be unable to solve, right?"
I suggest that you read up on how electricity works. Power door locks are tiny 12 volt motors they are low amperage. For simple lesson go open your car door and look how big the wire is. Now open your hood and see how big your battery cable is. For a battery the size of a door will need as least as big of a cable as your battery. So no I don't agree that it is insurmountable of not. It hasn't been done yet. The only way I can think of making it work would be a large flat conductor.
"Ideally the engineers would have taken more classes on the subject and would be able to discern whether or not it was -safe- and would do some testing." Well there you go. They don't take classes in this because it is something new. You take classes in what has been done. And guess what they they are in testing now. Guess what they are in the hey lets try this mode. They are trying to see what as the poster said, "what could possible go wrong stage".
No. 18 is an adult in most places. In society today we seem to encourage people to stretch out their teen yeas far past where they should. So no being 18 is not an excuse he is an adult by my standands. I to think the content is self indulgent mindless crap typical of a self righteous kid. The thing that the ACs don't get is that the quality of the content is not the issue. It could be of him wearing a dress and singing O'Canada while using Helium while smacking himself with a trout for all I care. It is the principle that counts not the content.
Actually I would say it is offensive mindless crap. But then so is much of what is on YouTube and frankly Slashdot. Sorry but the people that did this should be dismissed. I don't know how they thought that they could get away with punishing a student for putting this on YouTube. If the goal was for people to not see it they failed completely. The student is now a hero and more people will now see this crap than ever. If was to protect the school that was also a failure. But then I still don't know how that school district got away with spying on those kids with their laptops! No jail time and no mass dismissal in that case so I guess anything is possible. I hope Canadians all over the country protest this action. Too bad that they will be fighting for crap like this video but in this case it really is the principle that matters and not the actual content.
"Well, we can always hope that adequate social pressure will prevent most people from doing stupid/annoying/obnoxious things, as with anything in life. Like playing loud profanity filled music from their car while parked at the 711 at 10am on a Saturday morning? Where do you live because I want to move there.
There are things I would love to do with voice on a mobile device. Play lists, nav, texting, dialing. What I do want is to live a world full fo people talking to their phones or themselves. Can you imagine a mall full of people using voice to text? Or more simply hell.

And why not President Obama for not turning it down?

Sorry but I am not a judge and jury. Heck I shouldn't have even said dismissed since I am not Canadian. This is their business and not mine really.
Except they don't make the fuel tank frames and body panels.
They are small strong containers thats only stress is contain the fuel.
