    Hey I did say that Beck hero worship was slightly more annoying.

    But it just the hero worship in general that I find deeply offensive.

    Notice the hits I am taking from those that worship the Daily Show.
    And they can be funny at times but there fan base has made me stop watching them. I fear they are beginning to believe that they are more than comedians. Worse are those that get their "news" from the daily show.
    I to like NPR and I am a slightly to the conservative side of centrist. I feel there bias shows at times but I also feel that is an honest failing on their part. I do think they make the effort to not be biased and to be fair. In the end that effort makes them in my opinion a good news service. After all no one is perfect but they do try.

    Nobody used an Amiga 1000 with just 256k. Everyone bought the memory upgrade to 512k that plugged into the front of the 1000.
    And no the memory specifications and dates for the Apple III and Commodore B are real and factual. Those where not cheap computers but then the Mac sure wasn't cheap.

    I think a good bit of it was to keep the cost down.
    Remember that the Mac shipped with only 128k at first.
    No expansion was offered.
    And no that was not a lot of memory in 1984. The Apple III that shipped in 1980 had 128k expandable to 512k
    The Commodore B machine "yes I know it was slightly less successful than the AppleIII" Shipped with 128K
    The Apple IIc which shipped in 1984 also had 128 k.
    So you had 8 bit machines shipping with 128k of ram years before the Mac did.

    The Mac was supposed to be a "cheap" computer for the masses.
    It started off with a 6809e and 64k of ram.

    The Mac shipped with only 128k because 64kb chips where the standard at that time. 64kb*16== 128k. It was at the the time the cheapest memory system you could use.
    When chip size jumped to 256kb you saw the MacPlus at 512K.
    It was all about money.

    Actually for the day it was great.
    It did have color and real multitasking. Back then UIs where very new. IT actually got better over time and you could customize it a lot.

    Which is why I said the hero worship of them is slightly less annoying than of Glenn Beck.

    Truth is that the hero worship of them is slightly more annoying. The fact that people put such political value in what those two comedians says is really scary.
    The only reason I find the Hero Worship of Beck more annoying in totall is that Beck is more annoying as a person and political figure.
    I would like for everybody to stop worshiping all the TV and radio talking heads and start thinking for themselves.

    I would put him as left but not a left wing nut.

    That is the problem the left and right wingnuts seem to be screaming the loudest.
    And now that our news services have become more entertainment then news they feed them.
    Conflict sells. Cooperation solves.
    We have too much selling and not enough solving.

    Bahh.
    Actually I am glad to see this but Stewart never worried about being reasonable when Bush was in power.
    Frankly the hero worship I see for Stewart and Colbert are just a little bit less annoying than the hero worship of Glen Beck.
    Being the cynical centrist that I have become of late I think this is just their reaction to the counter swing in politics that they see coming.
    On a bright note even though I thing they are both self serving talking heads I do hope it does some good.
    A stabilization in the middle is better than the polarization that has been going on.

    Yep everything you say is correct.
    But I do agree most people can live with 32 bit for now. For most users CPU performance isn't a bottleneck anymore.
    For scientific users, gamers, video editors, and servers of all kinds 64 bit is the way to go.
    Of course Microsoft in their wisdom decided to do one thing that drives me crazy with their 64bit OS.
    WHY THE HECK DID YOU PUT 32 bit PROGRAMS IN Program Files(x86)!
    You should have put the NEW 64 bit programs in the new directory and kept the older programs where they where for compatiblitly.

    Actually the Trieste was not very maneuverable. Hopefully this new sub will actually maneuver and poke around a bit. The Trieste to put in space terms was Viking or maybe Apollo 11.
    This new on will be Spirt or Apollo 17 if you like

    And the US could go to the moon again if we had the will. Russia could also probably do it. The EU could but it would take them a bit longer since there experience with Man rated craft is limited.
    China or India could do it in between 10 and 15 years.

    Novell has been that way for a very long time I fear.
    Netware was great. I have not used it for years but if you need a NAS it is probably still a good way to go. It probably flies on modern hardware.
    Novell bought WordPerfect ,Quattro Pro and Unix and ran them right into the ground or at least just let them waste away.
    Novell could have intergrated Netware services onto Unix which they only half hearty did now they are really pushing for that on Linux which is a little late.
    WordPerfect and Quattro Pro where both very good programs but Novell never really put the effort in them to take on Microsoft.

    VMWare buying them is interesting. I could see VMWare making their own Linux system. Make VMWare into a full OS that you then install Linux or Windows on top off.
    I don't know if a client Linux makes any real sense for them.

    Actually if you read the link. I know what am I thinking read the link on slashdot.
    This is about creating high temp SMAs and using super computers to model them instead of melting metal testing repeat.
    It is actually kind of interesting in a very geeky science way.

    What I am saying is that typing install, dir, cd, copy, or ls isn't writing code or programing.

    I just don't think that society would be helped by this guy going to jail.
    As I said he will never get another sysadmin position unless the company just doesn't care.
    Forget working for any local, county, state, or federal government jobs.
    Medical IT is right out the door as well.

    He was an immature Bozo but really not evil yet.
    I now fear that he may become evil.
    He isn't dumb and really doesn't have a lot to loose.
    He also seems to have a limited understanding of consequences of his actions.
    I fear that he will hurt himself or others at this point.
    That he or will open a comic book store.

    You know I am about as conservative as you get in many way. I often find Slashdot to be too dismissive about protecting children and other issues.
    But this guy wasn't really a sociopath. He was doing nothing that we would consider a wrong for 17 year old.

    Yes he really should not be in a position of trust but he needed guidance and or a mentor. He needs to grow up.
    The problem is that he has pretty much blown his future at this point.
    No sane person will risk him after the PR he has gotten.
    If he ever blows it again this will be brought up and thrown back in his future employers face.
    Really kind of sad.

    I don't think he was stalking boys anymore than one teenage boy stalks his friends.
    He just never got the idea that he was now a grown up.

    Yea he looks like my friends did in 1983 minus the laptops. We had C64s.

    Our culture is getting so odd. We expose kids and preteens to so much more of the adult world than we ever did but at the same time we do not see anything odd with young adults acting like teenagers into their 20s.

    By 22 or so it was common for a person to be married and even have a child to support.
    Now that is considered two young.
    But at the same time we see nothing wrong with kids watching R rated moves and TV shows that are clearly adult in nature.

    It is like we have now decided that "teenager" should mean 10 to 30.

    Yes if you change that argument to tar to a variable and some control logic to check that something was passed and you put it in a file then it is programing.

    Yes creating a sequence of commands and using logic statements to control the program flow is programing.

    But typing commands on the commands line isn't.
    You are not programing or writing code when you type dir or ls!
    All that does is mystifies the command line and tells people that it is too hard to do.

    I agree that writing shell scripts is programing.
    I have seen some humdingers written in Bash and there are several books on writing in Bash.
    But ls, tar, and or install are not parts of the Bash language.
    They are programs that you are executing. No different than clicking on their icon!

    A shell can execute shell programs.
    You write them in an editor!
    What you write on the command line of the shell is not programing.

    tar -xzvf file.tar.lz
    sudo ./install

    Is not programming.
    It is a terrible thing to teach users that anything they do on the command line is programing or codes!
    It is just telling a computer what to do. It is no different that clicking on a menu.

    Programing requires logic and design skills.
    Using a command line does not.

    And yes I have had more deal with more than one user that when I said.
    type "dir /p"
    respond with "slow down I am not a programmer"
    And with idiot techs that when I tell them to go to the command line and type ping tell me "I don't know DOS just windows!"
    So NO IT FREAKING ISN"T CODE OR PROGRAMING TO TYPE INSTALL ON THE COMAMND LINE!

    Homosexual laws an a whole different kettle of fish and you are correct there.
    If most states do not have the two year rule than you are also correct. I do feel they should be included.
    But
    Statutory rape laws have nothing to do with sexting.
    Which is what you went off on.

    Thing is that you not liking a law is no reason to not pass it.
    There has to be a legal reason to not pass it if the majority of people want it.
    In this case I can see none.
    Since this is restricting access to material that the people feel is harmful to minors to minors.
    There is an abundance of legal rulings in favor of that.
    It has no negative effect on adult consumers. It doesn't restrict their access.

    The only negative effect it will have is on those that want to sell this material to minors.
    That is why you do not see folks like Walmart and Gamestop raising a fuss.
    The already enforce this as company policy.
    They will have to be more diligent but this will have no real effect on their sells.
    The Game makers don't want it because they will not make as many sales.

    Why you are so worried about it? I can only think that you feel that this is some attack on liberty but you are probably in the minority of the population.

    You are right but you should also read the article.

    Truth was he may have done Google a favor long term.
    He does not seem evil. He just seems immature. He like many people these days is acting like a teenager well into his 20s.

    He did not seem to be a sexual predator of any kind just stuck at a mental age of 17.

    The problem is Google management or frankly the lack of it. This guy should never have had the access he did. Google should have found the problem out around the same time as the parents.

    Think about it. Why should anybody at Google ever need to unblock someone on a customers IM?
    That should have thrown up a warning in a log.
    Why should he have been looking at someones contact list?
    That also should throw up a warning in a log.

    It is not an easy problem. Employees want to be trusted. Most of them really can be. The problem is that when you have 100 or more employees some of them can not be.
    Or even sadder one of them will be a good person that goes stupid for a second.
    It is nice if you can catch the evil ones and put up just enough barriers to stop the good ones from letting their curiosity go too far.
    The trick is not to make everyone else miserable. The real world just isn't as simple as most people on Slashdot think it is.

    Actually he doesn't seem to be really evil. He doesn't seem to be a sexual predator of any kind.
    He just never grew up. He thought that he was still a teenager and acted like it.

    This guy doesn't even seem to be a sexual predator. He was just a terminal teenager.
    He lacked manners, respect, an understanding of boundaries, and a total understanding of the consequences of his actions.
    In other words he is acting like a teenager. Google management failed because they let this bumbling fool have access to the data. His future in tech and frankly most businesses is shot to heck.
    On the plus side he was really harmless but immature.

    This is a case of not having a grownup in charge.
    There is a value to maturity and experience and frankly it seems as if Google is lacking those kinds of people.
    This guy should have been working on intrusion detection stuff and kept away from peoples personal data.

    Actually I think you understanding of the law is a not what it should be.

    Statutory rape laws are an adult having sex with anyone under 18 with the exception made if there is two years or less difference in age.
    AKA an 18 year old with a 16 year old is okay.
    It has nothing to do with sexting.
    That comes under child pornography laws.
    I do agree that they those should probably follow the same rules as statutory rape. If caught doing so a teen should at worst get a nice fine and a slap on the wrist for being dumb. They should not get a record as a sex offender that will follow them forever.

    You are making such a firm statement about laws but yet you do not seem to understand them.

    Also you fail to show how a law restricting sale of violent video games is wrong.
    Your claim that they will not provide 100% protection isn't a valid reason. No law does including laws on murder and rape but I doubt that anyone thinks those should be repealed.

    Strong opinions with a lack of knowledge is just not a good thin when it comes to laws.

    Let's be honest. The real people that do not want these laws are the big media companies. They want to sell and make money and they really don't care how they do it. Sex and violence sell. The game companies do not care about freedom of expression or art. They care about money.
    They love the current system where games are listed as M for mature. Mature? they are for the most part aimed at males below the age of 30!
    Not the most mature demographic on the planet.
    They are not mature at all. Hey I am over 40 and I do play some of those titles myself. They are good adolescent fun but they are not mature.

    What I find so funny is that the new search in windows 7 which I love is really... A command line!
    Wow so it is faster to type what you want than search through 25 layers of menus... Who knew.

    No most Canada is a fine nation and most of the people I have meet from their are very pleasant.

    It is just a few that grasp at any straw they can to try to show that they can to show how great they really are. Which is kind of sad because it really tends to diminish their real achievements and makes them look like a small emotionally insecure nation.

    Fortunately those Canadians are in the minority.

    BTW Scotland also claims Bell as well as Canada. Bell did keep a family home in Canada and is buried their. Can't say that I blame him since it looks like a beautiful area. But he became an American citizen and died as an American citizen.
    But I bet he loved Canada as well as Scotland and America.
    Hey I love Ireland where my grandmother was born and where I still have family. I love Victoria Canada where my wife and I spent our Honeymoon.
    And I love the US where I was born and I am citizen.
    So I can relate to Bell.
    And BE NICE TO OUR GOOD FRIENDS UP NORTH!

    You kid could go over to his friends house and his parents could give him heroin was well.

    Hell there are parents out there that will pimp your kid out for sex as well.
    That is where you are right about parents need to pay attention.

    So far it has been said that the chains are supposed to do this already. So why the fury? You are of course correct about how it will not be a sure thing but then the laws on buying tobacco and alcohol are also not a sure thing. Do you want those repealed as well? BTW someone on Slashdot will for sure along with statutory rape laws.

    The truth is that the people that will be not benefit from the laws are those that want to sell anything to anyone just to make money. That and kids that want to buy games that their parents don't want them to buy.
