I did read it. You can not "blame" a company when you hack the firmware of your hardware and stuff stops working when you update. I support hacking your device but when things break it is your fault. For all I know the media center feature "requires" access to X-Box live. If so then it is under the TOS as well for XBox live. I doubt that Microsoft failed to cross any T or dot any i in the TOS. What it comes down to is if you don't want to play by Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony's rules don't buy a console! I find it so amusing because a guy at work kept asking my why I didn't hack my 360 when I hack things like routers and such. I told him that I had no need to hack it because I didn't pirate games and there is no real home-brew community for the 360. Plus I didn't want to get knocked of Live. He laughed and said "like that will ever happen". Well it did just as Microsoft said it would since the original X-Box came out.
I am not a Fox News watcher but the hate seems to be more an act than anything so let's just get past that.
Can this work? Well how will most people know that when they Google it that they will not find Fox news or the other properties that Murdock owns? Of those how many will go to Bing or Yahoo which is now powered by Bing to search for it? That is the question. Will the money the get make up for the lack of traffic? Will this drive enough traffic to Bing to make it worth while? Actually I heard Bing is a good search engine but I am just too invested in Google for email and search to really bother with it. I still use a my Yahoo home page because I feel it is better than Google,s custom page but that is just a matter of taste. Too be honest this doesn't make me want to use Bing more but actually less. Not from any Fox New hate but because it seems like cheating to me.
Your subscription isn't suspended. Your device is just banned. The XBox live subscription requires you to have the internet and an unmodified XBox. If you bought a year of XBox live and then stopped paying for internet access would you expect a refund? They just removed a defective device from their network. All you need is a working unmodified XBox and your good to go.
You still have your device that you modified. The TOS for XBox live says that you must connect with an unmodified console. Probably the same requirement for connecting to Windows as a media extender and that requirement is probably well protected under the DMCA. I support the right to modify what you buy but that doesn't mean you have the right to expect support for those modifications or access to a network that forbids them from the start.
You sure as shooting can not got to court because your modified device doesn't work as well as your unmodified device does. People can crab all about it and can even not buy the next console from the console maker. Going to court over it is a waste of time and money.
They didn't take any functionality from your XBox at all. They booted you off THEIR NETWORK. When you first got on the network the agreement was that if you mod your XBox your booted off. You AGREED TO THAT and now it has happened. It is COMPLETELY legal and frankly fair.
Yep those that where banned may get $5 if that. The law firm will get a private jet and maybe an island out of it. Please folks the rules are you can not get on live if you mode your box. You still have your XBox you just can not play it on line anymore. I hope this gets tossed out so fast your head spins.
Then why work on Linux at all? No really think about it. I am sure they dug into the code looking for exploits since our government is at some point going to use Windows 7. A backdoor is a backdoor. Unless they are sure that they are the only ones that can use it they wouldn't put it in. Unless they put one in that is only active if you are not using US English so it would have to be hidden in the language support. But then how much you want too bet that anylists offten change their language to the one they are working in so even that isn't worth it.
Sounds exactly like what I heard about the first version of Word, the Mac, and early versions of Windows. You could get a lot more work done with WordPerfect or even Wordstar than Word V1.0 Heck we couldn't give it away at the store I worked at. Things can change. For the most part I even agree with you but I would never say never.
The 3rd world often doesn't have great internet access. As to not everybody needs a full blows OS and the hardware costs associated with it... I have a full blown OS running on a sub $200 phone. I doubt that Chrome OS will run on a less hardware than say Android will. So let's take a look at the options. "Full OS" Linux, OS/X, or even Windows offers you web apps and native apps. Both Linux and OS/X can run on low cost low power ARM cpus. Chrome OS offers you just web apps.
Humm........ Win for full OS.
Add an app store to Chrome OS and Google might have had a winner on it's hands. This looks like a new iOpener or 3Com Audry. Will it at least support Java?
What is wrong with font rendering? Take a look at a Linux box and then take a look at a windows machine or a Mac. Linux has gotten better but in general font rendering is a mess. Can we add a new API to X to fix video? Maybe but we keep adding fix on top of fix to this monster. I am not not even saying that we should toss X. What I am saying is that it is far from dumb to say that x has some real issues and that there might be time for a new system. For one thing display and printing are completely disconnected at the the level of xWindows. That is not a great situation since both are really just displays. Fonts are another mix mash of libs that live in different layers. Yes x-Windows may be fixed and patched to work but saying that even thinking about replacing it is foolish is just silly.
It's Sprint. Yes I am on Sprint. They have better coverage than T-Mobile at least as good as AT&T, They are cheaper than AT&T or Verizon, and they have really been working hard on their customer support. So far I have been very pleased. Oh and they don't cripple phones. The one downside is they are CDMA so you will have issues if you travel to the EU. If I go to the EU again for business I will probably get a cheap unlocked GSM phone and get a pay as you go sim there.
If you are where there is no coverage than yes More==better. I am not on AT&T or VZW but I keep hearing about just how bad AT&Ts services is all the time on Engadget and cNet Podcasts so this ad seems really fair to me. I use Sprint for the same reason you use T-Mobile. They are a lot cheaper, they don't cripple phones, and for me the customer support has been great. I good example that I am having problems with my new phone. The battery life just isn't great. I went in and they said that it may be a problem with the battery and gave me a new battery. Actually they gave me a second battery. Yes they checked to see what I had turned on and off on my phone first and then gave me a second battery. I have never had a problem with Sprint's customer support and they have a bigger network than TMobile.
First of all I don't think child molestation or kiddie porn is a victim less crime. I would be the majority of people also feel the same way. I am sorry that you have such a low opinion of the rest of the population but frankly your statements do not put you in my high esteem. Frankly they are pretty stupid. "then some prosecutor who has something against my politics and has the goods on some judge and gets a baseless warrant at three o'clock in the morning; then I must be guilty as Hell, right?"
Wow you must think pretty highly of yourself to think that some mythical prosecutor would make the effort to frame you. I suggest you find a cabin somewhere in the woods to hide from the black helicopters asap.
Why is it boarder line stupid? 2.8 is not out yet so the current version is still the one with the not so easy to use interface. I bet that it will be on the the Add remove menu if not Synaptic so what is the problem?
Really what is the problem with this. These computers are being searched AFTER a judge issues a search warrant. In other words constitutional law is being followed to the letter in this case. So what is the problem? Because it may involve child porn and you think that it is harmless? Well some of those computers have pictures of the victims "children" and the criminal act happening. There is nothing wrong with this legally. And having a fit about it is a clear case of calling wolf. I am sure this will be used in any investigation that involves a computer and not just for child porn. Complaining about the legal search of a computer after a warrant is issued is just stupid.
BTW I am sure that the NSA has much better systems based on FPGAs and Cell chips for breaking encryption than PS-3s but we will never hear about those and that type of wiretap without a warrant is what I am worried about.
I know that they are cross platform. That was my point. If you port things like GTK, QT, and Motif to a new graphics framework just how many applications would even notice? Keeping X for backward compatibility just doesn't seem that important.
Yes that is a problem. I find it funny because I am not saying that we should drop X. I am asking why shouldn't we. Couldn't a new solution be better for users today. I will say that right now the current implementation of X on Linux really isn't that great. It seems very fragile and the configuration tools are not ideal to say the least. I don't think Xs support for accelerated video playback is fully baked yet as well.
This is a great none answer. Apple wrote Quartz didn't they? It didn't take decades. The question is what does X do better than say Quartz? Besides the large base of software and applications that use it why keep it? I am not sure that you would not keep most of the software once GT and GTK are ported. I am asking the valid question of why keep X and not even think about replacing it?
I have worked with X and I would love to hear what makes it great. I will agree that current implementations seem to leave a lot to be desired but how much of that is because of the actual design and how much is because of poor programing? What makes X better than say Quartz? Or the current Windows graphics systems? I like most programers these days just us GTK or QT for our apps. So for the average users what makes X the best besides the large amount of existing software running on it? I honestly wonder just how much of that we would loose if x was replaced as long as you ported GTK and QT to the new display system. For the hard core apps you could just run x on top of the new system like Apple does.
Enlightenment is a much lighter DE. I don't think it is going to compete with KDE or Gnome for Desktop mind share. I see it as ending up on mobile devices and maybe netbooks. Also Enlightenment is very NeXT/OSX in look. Linux is right now starting to look like it will big in the Mobile market. Android, WebOS, and Maemo are gaining a lot of ground while WinMo is loosing ground. Linux can never be the winner. Linux is an option and the users are the winners.
Yes people do have every right to complain. They have the right to not buy Apple products as well. I also find some of Apple's actions regarding the App store to be disturbing. When it comes to the C64 Emulator I have to wonder if it might not be for copyright reasons. Who owns the rights to the the C64 basic and Kernel? Microsoft wrote the Basic way back when. People have every right to say they don't like something.
Until it fails to get Bing enough traffic to be worth while...
Sounds like a match made in heaven.
I did read it. You can not "blame" a company when you hack the firmware of your hardware and stuff stops working when you update.

True enough. I don't know which has the most worst politicians Chicago or New Orleans? It is a shame because I actually like Chicago.
What is wrong with font rendering? Take a look at a Linux box and then take a look at a windows machine or a Mac. Linux has gotten better but in general font rendering is a mess.
