So what is and not obscure? ADA? It is used in all the latest Boeing airliners but not used a lot outside of the aerospace community. What about Lisp? Or Haskell? What about Comal, Action! and Promal? Now those are obscure. Pascal,Modual, Oberon? Or the RPG family? REXX? Some are truly obscure or just not used anymore and some are very common in a specific domain. For instance I have never needed to use Lua but I know it is used in a lot of places.
For me it is already simple. I have a wife and a circle of friends. 1. I would give all friends children Florida pre paid college funds. 2. Set up scholarships. 3. Maybe start a college. The issue is to weed out those that are in search of a trough.
The cost of changing all the documents and textbooks that reference that mountain. If the folks in Alaska want to call it chicken pot pie that is fine with me. This is useless and does nothing to make the world a better place.
As long as President Obama is will to pay the 300 million dollars or so to replace every textbook and reference book that says the highest mountain in the US is Mount McKiney out of his own pocket I am fine with it.
Funny but a friend of mine called the Apple II a toy but then he had a PDP-11. Actually the AppleII was a better computer than the Vic-20 but it also cost many times as much. Frankly I loved all the computers of the late 70s early 80s. So many new ideas and so many systems and all of them you could learn inside and out except for the Ti-99.
That is just for the parts. The IT department should have people on staff to do the actual install and copy the data over. If the software is not really brain dead then they should just point the data directory to a NAS or SAN drive.
I worked for a software company that had a contract with the Senate of Canada to supply software. One of the times that we sent them a free update it got stopped by canadian customs at the border. They asked me the value of the package and I told them it was free. They did not like that so I told them it was 8 floppies and at 5 cents each it was 40 cents. They did not like that answer. I finally asked them if they understood that it was going to the Senate of Canada. They said they did but they still must collect a tariff on it! I finally just lost it and said you do know that you are trying to collect money from the government of Canada to give the government of Canada! He said yes. I told him he had just invented taxerbation. We set up a BBS that day so they could download the updates. Yes this was pre internet.
"JFK kept us stumbling forward in VN until just before he got killed; by then he planned to get us out." That is pure fantasy. At no point in JFKs time in office did the number of US troops in VN decreased. LBJs advisors where JFKs advisors. Nixon actually got negotiations started and ended.
Post WWII when people were used to mass death. Yes the US would have won but would have taken a lot of loses. Kind of like how France won WWI and Britain won WWII.
An inventory catalog in excel for download on the internet. AKA. No you are wrong. If you want I could find more of them as well as docs in DOCX format for download.
these would be non-is "5. Data connections will be difficult, high speed ones even worse.
6. Provisioning and resupply of fuel, maintenance spares, personnel and food will be very expensive.
7. Emergencies will be hard to deal with, fires, accidents, taking on water etc..
8. Storms, wind, waves, etc will all cause you issues.sues" Okay 7 is still an issue but storms in a SF Bay, data connections, and provisioning would not be a big deal.
Actually yes from 1945 to about 1962-3 the US could have won in a nuclear war. Russia lacked any real way to deliver nuclear bombs effectively to the US. Now Europe, Japan, and Korea would have been toast but the US would not have been that badly damaged. Yes we could have won that in about the same way that France won WWI or Britain won WWII
"Similarly, you can't convince a Republican that the Pro-life movement is designed to keep women barefoot and pregnant"... Yea and that is not propaganda at all... A combination of over simplification and vilification.
"American lost the Vietnam War because we weren't able to cope with a situation where there was so much guerrilla warfare taking place." No you are wrong. The US didn't actually lose the Vietnam War. We actually had a peace treaty that secured South Vietnam as in independant state. After the pull out and Watergate North Vietnam broke the treaty and the US decided to let them. If you read the Pentagon papers you will see that the US never actually wanted to win that war. They were in fact afraid to win that war fearing it could cause a larger war with the USSR and or China. The US's goal was always to fight to a stalemate. Overall it was an epicly stupid idea thanks JFK and LBJ!
Actually from 1950 until around 1962-65 the US could have won a nuclear war with Russia without much damage. Europe would have been toast as well as Japan and Korea but the US would have been pretty safe. The USSRs bomber fleet at that time was tiny and lacked forward bases to make attacks deep into the US and the US had a pretty good Air Defence system. The R-7 ICBM took days to fire and was not a practical weapon system but it did scare the daylights out of the US. The most dangerous weapon system was probably the strategic nuclear torpedos the USSR developed. Those could have done a lot of damage to coastal cities in the US. The Death toll would have been huge but the US would have come out ahead and would have "won". MAD is what came after that period when the US decided it was too costly to win a nuclear war with the USSR starting around the late 1960s.
"100% of the worlds pain and misery come from these people who find glee in forcing their beliefs on others." No you are wrong and of course an idiot. Illness, death, poverty, health problems mental health issues, addiction, and yes marital infidelity all are sources of pain and misery. What you said is demonstrably wrong and should be obvious to anyone with any education above third grade or so. AKA it is valid as Donald Trump's political statments.
Ada and the PRG family jumped to my mind first. Do those count?

From my experience most history books I had stopped well before 1960. Heck they almost did not get past WWII.

And so many CPUs 8080, 8085, Z80, 6809, 6502, 68000, 8088,8086, TI TMS 9900, NS-32016 and goodness knows what else.

You are right I just had a brain fart.
Common off the shelf.
You it department needs to learn about and be authorized to use COTS for items less than $100.
The facts are that all during his time in office the number of troops went up. What might have happened is and will always be a guess.

Being sick of and being used to are not mutually exclusive states. In fact I would say they are more often than not one in the same.
That is often true.
x86 vs the 68k, MS-DOS vs Amiga, MS-DOS vs GEMTOS. and so on.
marketing often beats better tech.
