No, they weren't sued. What happened is they were sent out threatening lawyer letters, saying stop using the 3dfx glide sdk to make these wrappers. Those who didn't use the sdk kept on going, and they still do today. Precarious position to be sure, but not sued. I really like the fact that I bought a creative labs tnt more & more everyday. Had no idea they start kicking ass, but its been a nice present.
I think it would be nice to have the kernels up on CVS, but I don't think they should break the style of the current releases, ie linus puts them out when neccesary. Really, the advantage would just be for ppl who really dig or for some odd reason, only have access to a CVS tree.
But ya know what? I'd bet cash that someone already has this setup for those who really need it. I doubt there'd be demand enough from everyone else.
The reason Rob has worked hard is to keep people like you happy, by being able to filter out stuff such as this. Now I know this won't help those wanting linux, but not kernels update, but as I saw someone else say, these updates will slow quite a bit in a couple months. Relax. I'm sure you will be able to find happiness in life. What rob does w/ slashdot won't deprive you.
Silly to say this, but dude, you are *the man*, in an excellent way. When the list on voodooextreme was hit up like a drunk sorority girl at OSU, I knew I could turn to/. to save me. Thank man.
My big stumbling block was your problem also for a long time, so I decided hell, lets get another box. I was finishing off a warehouse of computers (the company I worked for had bought out the remains of aol snarfing compuserve & closing it's columbus oh headquarters), deeming machines dead & living, lo and behold I found a dual p150 bare bones. Linux doesn't retail and NT wouldn't run (cha-ching), so I negotiated 2 days of work for this computer. I already had a monitor and believe me, it got the best hardware of 1996 (, just built the machine in november98) such as vanilla 2940, 4mb millenium 2, sb32, buncha scsi and 3com509. RedHat 6.0 is beautiful on it. Moral of this story? Bagger computers are always availiable and you never know, you might stumble on something better. -jeff ps. Now my stumbling block is just being a slacker.
I'm somewhat with you here. High school sucked for me somewhat, but really it was doings in my personal life, not due to bullies or anything. Because of problems at the time, I did dream of putting the smack down on those who bothered me, but it was never serious. Not everyone on slashdot had sucky times in high school, or sucky times due to peers, but I think the majority did. We're not wrong, but lets face it, alot of people w/ the same interests as us have gone through hell. -jeff
I've spent 12 years of my education (1st-12th grades) in private schools, catholic actually. Its still there, just different. I was rarely bothered physically, but mentally it sucked alot at times. I've heard of public schools that are alot better for people who aren't mainstream, but they're easily outnumbered by those that are... Something out a Neil Stephenson's SnowCrash (highly recommended btw). Good luck to those still suffering through high-school. -jGondek
I think Katz has just solidified what happened to us in high school without the witch-hunt of the colorado killings. I would guess most of us here had to endure ridicule, stupidity and persecution. I consider myself lucky, as I went to a pretty enlightened (relatively) high school, Chaminade-Julienne, where the computer geeks were able to have normal lives. On the other hand, I can't speak for the people who wear black and listen to KMFDM, as they were never people who I hung out with, so I don't know what tribulations they've gone through. What my hope is, is some wacky-alternative (ie a-typical) reporter/media type will find a way for Katz' logical word to find a way into the mainstream. Its simple to blame a big bad computer, but for the average 'rent to talk to thier kids about how they treat other kids at school is beyond the average parent. Good luck to those still in the hell of high school, there are _much_ better things past it.
Well, at least till EBay fixes it, all people have to do is disable javascript. I know I've been doing that for awhile. So those... Informational pop-up windows won't open when I close a page. Yeah, informational. -j
What the above person said. Also, you could try freeciv. Its an open source civ clone for unix, that may sate your tastes for a time. Search for it on freshmeat. -jeff Gondek
From what I see, the reason jonkatz says that bill spits out something straight from the manager in dilbert. Bill gates has had something written in his name that seems to be devoid of any human emotion, but is full of that wonderful gleam that managers are rightfully (for the most part) steriotyped for loving. Why consider it fiction? Lets think of it more as a PR release. This is a reason bill is bad. Somebody who is in touch w/ the realworld, would never put their name on something like this. Its a little scary, that this person who is so out of reallife, has so much power (By which I mean the minor power of MS & the more signifigant power of his $$$). Also, Katz has always been a bit wordy, but I like him, and I don't see you doing any better. I think the whole hatekatz/filterkatz/etc started a while back, people didn't like him because he didn't have tha m@D ph3@r3d h@X0riNg ski11z for linux, now people like something to bash (fact of human nature), so they hang on the bandwagon. Relax and just consider jon more food for thought. -jG
