  1. Re:hay? on Electronic Gadget Ideas for a New House? · · Score: 1

Hay would be drastically different than building a house from straw. Hay is still green and therefore wet and tasty to pests you dont want. Straw on the other hand is another beast altogether. Straw bale was actually a common practice no more than 100 years ago in the middle of the United States where there were less trees to be used for construction. Since fire requires oxygen for combustion there is little risk of lighting a straw bale on fire. It would be very similar to holding a match to the bottom of a yellow pages, sure it will light... eventually. By the way as an asside there is very little risk of pests in hay as well since there is low moisture in straw and little nutritional value to pests such as mice. It also has an R value of approximately R50, I'd love to see stick frame construction compete with that.

Microsoft paying out that much is like me getting a $50 speeding ticket. Its simply not going to make a difference. For a company that makes that much money it has to be at least in the hundreds of millions.

    Food for thought

My name is Matt and I'm an evercrack addict. Yeah well thats pretty much what it came down to when one day I realized I had had 4 hours of sleep in the last two days and ate the last 6 meals in front of the computer. Then looking around the room at old pizza boxes and fast food wrappers my own odor bagan to bother me. This was the point where I decided I should probably stop playing everquest.

Now Everquest2 is out and I have to resist the urge, and not slip into my old habits.

  7. Nice to see in a mainstream news site on The Microsoft/SCO Connection · · Score: 3, Insightful

Not to knock slashdot, but most people who browse slashdot already have some negative feelings towards microsoft and don't necessarily feel that they practice the most responsible business practices. Its nice to see a more "mainstream" (read John Q. Public can't use a computer might read) is carring a story like this.

  9. makes patching a bit more diff on Live CD for PC Games? · · Score: 1

I have a feeling that many companies are worried that they will not be able to patch their code if they discover a bug 3 or 4 months down the line.... most (non-tech savy) customers are alright with d/ling a binary patch installer but do not want to d/l an iso and re-burn it.

  10. chanel modulator on Closed Circuit Computer Television? · · Score: 1

so long as the computer you have has tv-out (if it doesn't get a card that does) then just output the display to a channel modulator which you can get from various sources online www.smarthome.com included. You can also put sound over this as well... then you can pop this over a regular coax cable the added advantage is that you can set it up to go over with regular cable or local tv programming but on a seperate channel... usually you can configure the channel.

  11. Microsoft not all bad on What Is Important In A User Interface? · · Score: 1

As much as I hate to say it when it comes to user interfaces microsoft can do something right. The company has done extremely well at making things simple to do. So simple in fact that for the most part anyone; including someone with little to no computer expeirence can do what they want. The problem with microsoft is (well instability), that it doesn't provide the user enough options and is very limited in what it can do. Many people like linux because of the stability and the flexibility of their products compared to microsoft. Its the one area that they lack strength.

I think that where gui programmers should be focusing is giving the end user as many options as possible. At the same time however they have to try to figure out how make it as simple as possible. If there are two ways for the user to do things the simpler is almost always better. Don't forget thought that they should be able to do it the hard way if they want.
