Be careful not to let CVS screws your file permission. CVS fiddles with the x, r, and w bits by design, and you don't want the wrong bit set on the wrong file, ie. passwd, master.passwd, or pwd.db etc. world readable/writable.
Or if I am bored, I will just stuff something into their "paid by addressee" envelop, and mail it back to them. That postage will cost them some more real money. If a lot of people do that, they probably would think twice.
What about other *Nix ? Why stop at Linux ? I am sure you will find GNU software in lots of other *Nix, free or commercial alike. By RMS's logic, should we have GNU/FreeBSD, GNU/OpenBSD, etc. and even... GNU/Cygwin.
I think no one went back and read those old thread on/., so I am just writing this note for myself:) Knuth's works have always been an inspiration for me even though my limited knowledge of CS and especially of mathematics hinder me from appreciating the real beauty of his works. Talking about Knuth's contribution to the public domain knowledge, and his view about software making me wonder: who pioneer the concept ? Knuth or Stallman ?
This is definitely out of line with the intended benchmark, and perhaps I don't know better, but I am just curious... With that amount of RAM (4Gig), maybe they can setup to do an "in memory" build, and cut the build time by half ?!
More interesting is that not just MS insisting on IE be present, some other company also insist on having IE. Try install some old version of DiskKeeper on your new machine (which probably already have IE 5.x or 6.x), it will insist on install some old 3.x or 4.x version or IE, and refuse to install anything if you say no (just because you don't want to downgrade IE)
I don't know why you drag MS into the picture, not that I am anti-[MS basher] or anything, I just think you missed the point. It is a good thing that Marcelo and the kernel guy managed to put out fixes quickly. But rushing to release some fixes and mislabel the source tree along the way is - as the original comment put it - not very professional. We are talking about the *stable* Linux kernel source tree here. We all make mistake sometimes, and we need to learn from mistake not denying it. I am glad Marcelo is open about it on #kernelnewbies
IMNSHO, it time for Linus to realize that his beloved baby has outgrown him. It is nolonger his own baby, it's everyone (who runs Linux) 's baby now. It is not fair to everyone when important patches get dropped just because of the way Linus like to have thing done, and swamped, overloaded by the process.
I think it is ridiculous just imagine the amount of work needed to get the tremendous amount of kernel patches into the kernel source tree is done by one man. No matter how prudential the process should be, handled by one man is just impractical.
Well, Linus, Linux is at the age when she starts dating now...
In apocalyptic literature, 7 is the number representing perfection, while 6 is the number representing imperfection.
Larry, I think number theorists would crack that, contrary to general belief, the number 6 is one of those most significant and rarest of numbers belong to the perfect number category. Those number have their divisors added up to themselves (6=1+2+3). The other perfect number is 28 (28=1+2+4+7+14). Perhaps someone will be able to point out the others.
But whatever the perfect number, I am sure that Perl 7 will be more pearly than Perl 6:)
Agreed! I've called it Linux since 92 (that was when I started installed Linux on my PC), and everyone was happy and called it Linux as the OS grown to what it is today. So why all the fuss about whether to call it Linux or GNU/Linux now ?
I always make good use of the accompanying "no postage required" envelope, and send it back to the sender.

Windows = "Windows" - will give translation when enough statistical info becomes available
.Net = Non-ExistenT
NT = Not Trustworthy
That was why he was "visonary"
Seeing that makes me have second thought about XML's signal/noise ratio ...

And you are a native America?

I am gonna shut up and read the rest ...
