So all you do is just boot the laptop and that is it? When using windows SSD is major improvement for systems that have to boot frequently. At work I do not have SSD and I do not need it because I just reboot once every few weeks/months and after a while everything becomes cached in the RAM. At home everything is quite different. I boot my computer couple of times a day and usually either check email, browse web, run game, do some development or photo stuff. In this case SSD is really great as I can boot computer in about 10 seconds and then start anything I want in 1-2 seconds. With HDD everything is much slower in this scenario.

Well then that CPU is effectively fucked, as I can tell ya that folks HATE Windows 8. Can't say as I blame 'em, I spent half the night having to hack the living shit out of Win 8 to make it into a system that was actually usable. For those that want to know how here are the steps and note that you can NOT "just add Start8 and be done", not by a long shot!

I use Win8 on my desktop. I learned to ignore charms and use start button on the keyboard. I also do not use any metro apps. That is about it.I do not see why win8 is such a big problem. I see win8-specific stuff maybe 20-30 seconds a day max. It is entertaining to see people pissed for no reason but man.. relax. Get a beer or something. We lived through XP mickey mouse interface with unremovable moviemaker. We can handle charms, apps and metro. Man up!

Vanilla VS2012 won't let you build an installer for anything. That type of project is gone. You are welcome to use some crappy open-source substitute WiX (windows installer xml toolkit). I tried it and it sucks. What previously was a 5 minutes of mouse clicks became few hours of reading and experimenting with horrendous XML. Discarding features is the worst thing that happens to VS devs. Macros - gone. ATL SOAP support - gone. Deployment projects - gone. Static linking for mixed native/.NET C++ projects - gone. "Old" managed C++ syntax - trying to die since VS2005? 2008? Even STL is changing from version to version. As a C++ developer I feel like I am in a dumpster looking for leftovers of features. I wonder how long VS is going to support C++. The language itself is a trainwreck in ASCII.

I do not think you have used windows 8 much. It is pretty good system that needs a few tweaks. Other than that it is not that difficult to get used to. The big deal about start button just surprises me. If people cannot handle simple change like this then are they even able to learn anything new? What if their favorite grocery store closes or bread is no longer available? Are they going to starve to death?

  24. Start button sucks! on Windows 8.1 May Restore Boot-To-Desktop, Start Button · · Score: 0

I really hate start button. Who really needs it? There is one on the keyboard already. Booting to the desktop seems nice but what is the point? I always want to launch something and go to the start menu anyway. I would really like to see separation of metro/desktop apps though. If I do not want to run any apps in metro mode I do not want to see them in start menu nor I want them opening when I double-click on some file. The default metro-style image viewer in windows8 does not have the most important feature - slideshow or even possibility to show the "next" picture. If I want to see images in folder I cannot. I have to close the app and open it again. Just like in 1992 :) On development side Metro-style apps are poorly supported. Default MVVM style development with tombstoning/activation is not implemented properly in Visual Studio and multiple half-baked open source libraries with layers and layers of artificial abstractions just piss me off :) Also the lack of acceptance by users and attempts to enhance window8 interface means that development APIs will change again pretty soon. Moving target with not much meat on it... I'll pass for now.

Manual categorization just does not work if you are really working. Install 3 versions of Visual Studio, 3 SDKs, office, few third party dev apps and start menu becomes an unmanageable mess.
