Screen size, resolution, storage capactiy, storage speed, processor speed, active digitizer, RAM, x86 architecture are all advantages the Surface Pro has over the tablets you mentioned.
So all you do is just boot the laptop and that is it?
When using windows SSD is major improvement for systems that have to boot frequently. At work I do not have SSD and I do not need it because I just reboot once every few weeks/months and after a while everything becomes cached in the RAM. At home everything is quite different. I boot my computer couple of times a day and usually either check email, browse web, run game, do some development or photo stuff. In this case SSD is really great as I can boot computer in about 10 seconds and then start anything I want in 1-2 seconds. With HDD everything is much slower in this scenario.
Well then that CPU is effectively fucked, as I can tell ya that folks HATE Windows 8. Can't say as I blame 'em, I spent half the night having to hack the living shit out of Win 8 to make it into a system that was actually usable. For those that want to know how here are the steps and note that you can NOT "just add Start8 and be done", not by a long shot!
I use Win8 on my desktop. I learned to ignore charms and use start button on the keyboard. I also do not use any metro apps. That is about it.I do not see why win8 is such a big problem. I see win8-specific stuff maybe 20-30 seconds a day max. It is entertaining to see people pissed for no reason but man.. relax. Get a beer or something. We lived through XP mickey mouse interface with unremovable moviemaker. We can handle charms, apps and metro. Man up!
Strange; where I am sitting, I hear of and see endless numbers of problems with Word with my colleagues: Word crashing on or garbling documents with too many floating figures, equations that suddenly turn into un-editable bitmapped images, documents full of "Error reference not found" (try remembering exactly what you wanted to refer to a month ago...), "save as PDF" generating pages with a gray toner-wasting background.
Aren't they the same people who love office 97 and windows XP so much that they refuse to upgrade?
VS C# support is awesome. I tried plugins that do refactoring (maybe resharper?) but found out that built-in refactoring support is enough for me.
Now if you are C++ dev then you can go and MFC yourself. No refactoring for you.
Vanilla VS2012 won't let you build an installer for a Windows service either,
Vanilla VS2012 won't let you build an installer for anything. That type of project is gone. You are welcome to use some crappy open-source substitute WiX (windows installer xml toolkit). I tried it and it sucks. What previously was a 5 minutes of mouse clicks became few hours of reading and experimenting with horrendous XML.
Discarding features is the worst thing that happens to VS devs. Macros - gone. ATL SOAP support - gone. Deployment projects - gone. Static linking for mixed native/.NET C++ projects - gone. "Old" managed C++ syntax - trying to die since VS2005? 2008? Even STL is changing from version to version. As a C++ developer I feel like I am in a dumpster looking for leftovers of features. I wonder how long VS is going to support C++. The language itself is a trainwreck in ASCII.
This could be hot for a while. Knowing that people liked planking, rickrolling and other crap this location naming could keep idiots busy for a while:)
Ain't that awesome. My things could have their own social network. They can "friend" and "like" other things. I'll try to keep my bank accounts from social networking. I don't want my bank account sexting with somebody's paypal account.
Yes, avgas is in $5-8 range when auto gas is below $4 a gallon. Apparently putting avgas in your car means that you are breaking laws of logic.Who in his/her right mind would want to fill up the car with gas that is more expensive and less available. Terrorist!
We've long established that the source of the human "soul" is in the brain.
We have established nothing. We have no idea what soul or consciousness is. Maybe my computer has a soul too? Does it die when I reboot it? Does adding another hard drive makes my computer more intelligent and with a bigger soul? This is weed-talk!
I hate the default "metro" picture viewer too. It does not have the simplest feature like slideshow! WTF? Metro part of win8 is half-baked and the 5 image viewers... it is just not windows. It is like some linux distribution with 25 crap-apps that cannot do one thing right.
The lack of visual clues in windows8? What about iPad? My friend showed me what he could do with his iPad and I was impressed, but I would have never thought about gestures with 4 fingers:)
I have never seen anybody complaining about iPad interface. Seriously, I have seen NO SINGLE TITLE that would say that iPad interface lacks visual clues.
Anyway, as a desktop user I find the idea of tiles in start menu quite useless and guy/gal who came up with name "charms" for the right side menu should be beaten to death with pink fluffy teddy bears.
I am employed by Burson Masteller? Good to know. When may I expect a check?
Anyway, congratulation on a fantastic conspiracy theory. I find it very amusing:)
Do not forget internet!
Gun should make a short video and upload it to youtube. Few photos with stylish filters and status updates should be posted to facebook, twitter and instagram. We are in the 21st century after all. Shooting alone is so 20th century.
This is not the point. We do not want to save anybody here. The idea is to sell more guns. It is an attempt by gun industry to have some sort of "organic" or "gluten free" guns which could be sold at Whole Foods.
I do not think you have used windows 8 much. It is pretty good system that needs a few tweaks. Other than that it is not that difficult to get used to.
The big deal about start button just surprises me. If people cannot handle simple change like this then are they even able to learn anything new? What if their favorite grocery store closes or bread is no longer available? Are they going to starve to death?
I really hate start button. Who really needs it? There is one on the keyboard already.
Booting to the desktop seems nice but what is the point? I always want to launch something and go to the start menu anyway.
I would really like to see separation of metro/desktop apps though. If I do not want to run any apps in metro mode I do not want to see them in start menu nor I want them opening when I double-click on some file. The default metro-style image viewer in windows8 does not have the most important feature - slideshow or even possibility to show the "next" picture. If I want to see images in folder I cannot. I have to close the app and open it again. Just like in 1992:)
On development side Metro-style apps are poorly supported. Default MVVM style development with tombstoning/activation is not implemented properly in Visual Studio and multiple half-baked open source libraries with layers and layers of artificial abstractions just piss me off:)
Also the lack of acceptance by users and attempts to enhance window8 interface means that development APIs will change again pretty soon. Moving target with not much meat on it... I'll pass for now.
It worked great in 1995. Somewhere around 2000 folders started to suck. When MS introduced start menu search I abandoned my futile attempts to categorize software into folders. Manual categorization just does not work if you are really working. Install 3 versions of Visual Studio, 3 SDKs, office, few third party dev apps and start menu becomes an unmanageable mess.
Screen size, resolution, storage capactiy, storage speed, processor speed, active digitizer, RAM, x86 architecture are all advantages the Surface Pro has over the tablets you mentioned.
So, nothing most people care about, then.
Do people care about anything?

Wrong question. Win8 and Office will fit just fine. Where would you put your files?

We will import electrical engineers from X. Meanwhile we will get more english and liberal arts majors.

It is a giant wok. Only handle is missing.
Guns are nice but I am looking forward to 3d-printed guillotine or medieval chair of torture. I want to be free and protect myself.

NM is radial measure? Overreach by SI unit people? Dude, I want the same stuff you are smoking.

Seems like a pattern. Go google then go microsoft.
Exploding magnets would have done just fine. Second amendment and all that. Stupid manufacturer.
