I'd hate to sound mean so early in the morning....
But maybe "ask slashdot" should be renamed to "ask slashdot users to type something in www.google.com/linux for me".
Well?
I install it into my machine sans NIC, then install one at a later time?
I'm thinking that they would bind it to something like....That SID on your P3 or P4.

Hell, I used to have to worry about not swimming right after I ate, now this???
I agree with you. I think that this stems from the lack of accountability that the anonyminity (sp?) of the net provides. If someone learns that they can stand on a street corner and scream profanity, and not be caught or punished, someone will be sure to think this is the best thing since sliced bread. So how do you make someone accountable for disruptive behavior on a "community" site? Sure you can log someones IP if they are disruptive or profane, but what then? Ban them? They'll just log on from another account. So what then? Ban the whole class "C" that they are on?
But on the other hand, this same anonymous-ness allows users to remain free of spam, stalkers, and general ass-holes of the net. Is there a middle ground. I don't know.
This was "on topic" before the story got a rewrite.
The original story did state that Linux was unsupported as well. That statement has since been removed.
Ahhhh, internet journalism. No retractions, just html editing.
You're right about the DSP not working under linux. I never could get it working under linux. The only way I could get a modem to work was to stick a pcmcia modem in it. I do recall seeing a hack/kludge workaround for it somewhere. It recalled booting into dos, then activating the mwave device, then using a batch file to boot back into linux. At the time I deemed it _far_ too much trouble to just hear sound.
Ok.
How many of you have actually tried to put linux (any distro) onto a thinkpad (any type)?
Hmmm?
I have. Three of them to be precise. And with only the mwave modem/soundcard on the 760xd, I've had no problems. Dual boot, single boot, whatever, and all worked fine. This includes the a20m. I can't speak for BSD, haven't tried it, but linux works fine. The poster of the original story should've asked around or did a google search for linux on thinkpads to see what experiences others have had.
But that would've taken away from the "anti-big buisness" slant to get the story posted on slashdot, wouldn't it?
Did I mention that I patented Beige? All pc manufacturers, be prepared to be served!

I agree with this whole-heartedly, unfortunetly. It seems that animated films don't do well here in the US if it 1) doesn't have a funny lighthearted sidekick that is probably an animal. 2) Couldn't be somehow packaged with a toy in a happymeal at McDonalds or 3) Have a theme song that is performed by whatever pop sensation / flavor of the month.
For Peter Parker? Hell no. I personally would like to see either Charlie Sheen or John Cusak. BTW, does Men is Black count as a sucessfull movie of a marvel character?
From what I understand, some company in Texas asked OSHA what their obligations were in this area, and OSHA resoponded. They did not, AFAIK go poking thier nose into this unasked. Someone asked them, they responded, and the whole thing got blown out of proportion.
Is I wonder if Ramsey Electronics used any of their own clocks and smoke alarms with hidden cameras in them inside their establishment. I'd like to see the footage they got, and I wonder if the federal agents ever thought of this.
If you take a look at thier catalog, They offer clocks and smoke detectors with hidden cameras in them. And I would use these for.....what exactly? I agree, most of thier other stuff is basic electronic kits, but a clock with a hidden camera? That's like a hunting store stocking armor piercing bullets.
Personally, when I read about the Bazaar, I figured it was way over my head. I'm somewhat of a linux novice. I'm able to get around a command prompt without too much sweat, but the bazaar seemed like a league away from where I was standing. Maybe a little better PR would be in order next time?
Actually, one of the guys that comes to our regular lan parties is in the same boat as you. A few games of q3 or halflife and he's about to hurl. What he uses is an elastic band that fits around your wrist and has a plastic bit that presses on a presssure point that alleviates your motion sickeness. You can probably find them in a drugstore. I don't have a specific name of brand. Hope that helps.
I'm glad to see the ACLU going after eschelon. I'm not going to jump into the "whether or not eschelon exists" discussion, but at least this might keep the ACLU out of areas like"school prayer", and "no religious references on town seals". Forget that stuff, go get eschelon! Note to eschelon, be scared. The ACLU is on your ass now. Best to just give up now.
This is the funniest thing to come down the pipe in a while. I esp. love the idea of different user access, with lower levels having lower (or no) weapon strengths. And the funniest part? "This work was funded by the National Science Foundation (without their knowledge) through a BIO Research Training Group in Ecological Complexity (NSF 9553623)."
I thought the unwritten code of conduct was "never admit you don't know the subject you're writing on". Oh, wait. That's the Berst Rule of Journalism. Nevermind. As you were. Seriously though. I thought it was great that Jane's admitted that they weren't the experts here. My hat's off to Jane's.
that it seems that linux is starting to become equated with "cheap solutions"? Now, all of us users know how it's more stable, etc., but, I'm seeing more and more companies jump onto it because it's "free". I wonder.............

I'm so very surprised that I've seen only one mention of Gracie Hopper. Anyone that carried around nano-seconds and pico-seconds has got my vote.
