I've been toying withn things like this for some time now. If you take a look on Microsofts CD, you'll find plenty documentation on how to automatically set up machines with names, IP, security patches all unatended. Then you'll need to keep up with your list of software - and their updates etc...
I would go with Computer Associates USD product because It's the one I know. from within that product you can install, and maintain accross you wan/lan your desktops -from the os to your software packages.
what would make me buy MP3's is something like the Itune and the Apple Music store integration . do something like it that support more platforms and you've got a deal.
People want to be able to listen some tracks (or parts of tracks), like they do in music store before buying the electronic version of the track - this has to be very easy to do. Buying should also be simple and not take 5 minutes/per track.
"Apple's Terminal is slow (though performance has been better in 10.2.x), doesn't support xterm mousing, and for some reason refuses to send PgUp/PgDn through to any"
Please take a minute and open a bug at bugreport.apple.com.
Gnu darwin packages some GNU software around the APSL licenced darwin OS from Apple. So really the benefits of GNU darwin is helping software mainainers to have their code compile straight out of the box on darwin and thus MacOSX.
OTOH you need to be aware of fink which brings the same kind of software to macosX and thus darwin.
Then you also have darwinports bringing to darwin the same has gnu darwin.
Gnu darwin will now only port x86 making the port "just" a little easier then the PPC one which involves endianess issue and other tricky stuff.
If developers are interested in darwin they should stick with the main developers of the OS (Apple), hence with PPC so interested party should join darwinports instead of Gnu darwin.
You don't ahve to deal with rootkits. Remeber the craking contest done by linuxPPC inc. It took over 3 mlonth to a long time linux dev, to xrite the correct shell code to break in a famous proftpd hole. SO for building a firewall it's worth it. see http://slashdot.org/articles/99/08/04/205226.shtml for the initial contest anouncment. can't find the end of it thought, but didn't look very either.
because its spam filter is really well done and catches almost all the spam I get into my 3 mailboxes. And I still post to usent with a valid adress. All my Spam end in a special folder, every once in a while I slelect all my spam and forward it nto the french equivallent e-mail adresse.
This has already been done in France the email adress is spam@cnil.fr. So many people did the forwards that the mailbox was Full almost everyday. They thought One person could deal with all the mails : they were wrong so they updated the mailbox and said they'll carry along with thos forwarded mails. The results from these mails will permit to create a law to ban spamming in France, thus starting something in the EU, that would force a EU law for Spam.
Open Firmware.
Basicly it's a forth interpreter that initialises the processor, initialises various chips on the mother board and initialises PCI cards. It's avaiables on MacIntosh since the PPC switch and on sun Hardware.
Booting from a USB drive on a mac would not be difficult you'de just specify the path of the system blessed folder, be it a linux, Open, Net, Darwin or Mac OS X system.
I've setup and used SDO from computer Associates, and Visio64 (but they are closing). Has mentioned above tivoli is also an option. There's also SMS from Microsoft but some dev is necessary to make it work. Whith SDO you'll be able to distribute to Microsoft OSes,Novell and a bunch of Unix systems has well.
The architecture is build around a MS SQL database which will store information on packages, client machines.
You'll be able to schedule when you're distribution will occur (thus not killing your network).
A neat option that's bundled with the product is called DTO. This option lets your decide which network route will be used to reach the clients. With it you'll be able to say : to reach machine C go thru machine B, not A. This really is cool.
The only way to have a cross-platform help-desk tool, is to access it from a web interface. Discard all non web interface product - but these days all products do provide such web access. Then you could use a free, opensource product. On the project I'm working on right now we use f2w Helpdesk. We had to install it on a linux Box. We had problems installing the prerequisite on our Solaris box. The software is quite simple to manage, and quite powerfull. Is 100% customisable and can even be accessed from Lynx based browser !! The product is python and zope based.
I think xtunes is really too similar to iTunes. The deveopers should change the name to somethin else before Apple lawers get after them...
Does the beast runs on linux PPC ?
This is one thing that bugs me in the inux world , the lack of support for non IA-32 architectures.
Apple used to be more linux friendly (but that was way before they purchased NeXT and got a "modern" unix, do not read A/UX here...).
On the same scale of things is there any effort to bring a quiktime player for linux ? would people use such software ?
After Video Apple's going for audio
on
Apple Buys Emagic
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
Well now that apple does control the home/semi-pro video market (they still need to kill premiere), they're going after a second "niche" market : audio.
They already have iTunes/iPod, they Get Emagic, now who's NeXT ? Steinberg ?
When apple will hold the Audio market, they'll just need to push a little more their switch capaing.
The funiest about this this is that 10/15 years ago apple had to sign some contract with Apple records (no URL to give) the record compagny that did the beattles, in order to keep their name : to keep their name they had to limit the Sound capabilities of all apple Hardware.....
it would seem relatively trivial to port XFS to the OS.
There's a icensing issue Here. SGI'sxfs is GPLed, apple does not endorse GPL or LPGLed software. They removed wget because it was gpled, gnutar has also been removed. Apple want to use BSD like licence exclusively, so one day if they want to they can make a closed source OS again.....
If you'de want xfs on OS X it should come from The GNU-Darwin project or from Fink. Both project are leading software port (one bringing support for AMD powered ia32 machines).
I do use cvs over ssh and it works (I used it for OpanDarwin). I then can ssh anywhere I want. The problem with CVSd is the case-sensitive issue that can be found in found in HFS.
First let see the state of UFS in Darwin:
When Darwin was built, Apple used FreeBSD 3.2 has its core BSD os, since then many changes where applied in the UFS code in FreeBSD (softupdates are the ones comes to mind). Since then Apple's version of UFS has not change too much.
HFS+ is Apple's MacOS native enhanced file system. So if you need to run Classic, if you need to run carbonised application that do have a resource fork then you need an HFS+ partition (see Mozilla's readme).
If you're more a unix guy like and want to compile OSS, host some CVS reposiroty then you 'll need UFS.
UFS is case sensitive. HFS+ is not (it might seems to be but is not).
I'de say for all macos Apps use HFS+ an create a second UFS partition where you'd put all your unix apps and other unix related stuff (CVS etc...).

plus you need dreivers to be rewritten to the kernel API of BSD.
The goog news about the ppc port of FreeBSD is that it'll be simpler to integrate to darwin and thus os X.
which is described here. And it's network described here
on that market, and that leader is Openwave.
Their solution is already selling millions a month.
The real question is will people use smart phones to browse the web.

I bet apple will release version 10.2.1 rela soon now because It's been almost A month since jaguar went GM.
