When You buy acosumer product from apple you get loads of software bundled with It, (iDVD, IMovie) etc... Taking every thing into account is important - The Hardware is by not way cheap, but you don't need to upgrade it every 6 month like the rule seems to be in the x86 world..... (not counting Firewir et all things you need to buy a card in a pc to have it).

I've ditched beos because of Be and its lack of support for their user's base and their lack of long term visoin, they never should have switched to BeIA without releasing version 6.0.
There's already 2 projects, one which is OpenBeoS hosted on Sourceforge and BlueOS. BlueOS aims at speed because the don't rewritte everything.
I think these project are loosing precious developers time, they should help the only saving project that looks worth it the one hosted by beunited which aims at obtaining a license from Palm for beos, to develop and upgrade it. They simply could help by creating application that will help the os, because the big problem for beos is it's lack of applications. The Authors of blueOS was writting Eden an Image manipulating program - he is now spending time on an OS layer and applications for that os layer won't be available when that layer is.
What I like about beos was, the UI+CLI, the ease of use of its OO programming API.
I've now found the same thing in another OS, and with that OS I can find commercial software, I'de advice all beos users to sitwh to macos X because you'll find in this os every thing you liked in BeOS.

Thr QNX port is also aawful and unusable-don't even think it builds
hence they need qnx developers to acquire the internals of mozilla to make the port build, squash qnx specific bugs...

Rather than just ranting and raving about your pet peeve, you should rant, rave AND enter it into Bugzilla [mozilla.org] (after ascertaining that it isn't already in there).
That's exactly (i think) why mozilla.org is hosting such event. If you read the weekly mozilla status, you'll often read that what mozilla.org's dev tend to do most is triaging their bugs in bugzilla, once bug are targeted and assigned they can start working on finding an norrowing the bugs and coding the fixes. For most of these steps you'll find information on mozilla.org's web site. You'll evne be able to run bugathon, help qa etc....
Some people just help eliminate bug duplicates but that's not enough, they still need the work force to creat patches and fixes. I've downloaded the source code once or twice, I've tried hard with the limited time I can devote to such project (I have a work, and ssocial life), I was disapointed, becaause I could not get fast enough in the internals of the code.
Such events can help people like myself without much time to dig into it and bust bugs out of the product. OTOH Universtity started and now most CS clases are starting many students will have some time to work on the project in the forthcomin year, with a little help in the bigenning this will (I'm pretty sure) widen the number of mozilla developers that are not from the AOL/Netscape Alliance. Also many school project can with such be launched, that will focuse maybe on a module of mozilla, but such project are really good for the quality of the code, I hope some cs teachers will see the oportunity to base some of the projects they'll lead focused around the mozilla project.
To be a lot more effective such announce should be spread a little bit more.

For backups at least ina profesionnal environement you need more speed. writting DVD is slow compared to technologies like LTO, which stores up to 200 Gig on a casette.Archives which you write and then store somewhere in a safe palce because You personaly don't need the data, are better stored on worm devices like DVD's. French quality commette recommends Worm device writting for archives you need to keep for the IRS.

If Apple wants to port osX to another platform, they should wait for IA64.
IA32 is dying its future si closed, a good move for Apple would be the IA64 move, but IBM already is readying it's AIX 5 L (L for Linux ?).

IMO , that kind of "feature" is useless to get some work done. It should be implemanted on the application level - ie only a few apps need ta have alpha channel things like the Gimp or some games. The only people really interested are Hardware vendors, one more occasion to upgrade the CPU and/or the Graphic card.....

Your just a bit late in your question, Computer Associates already does this. They use neugents which are snmp agents (and thus integrates into CA's TNG managment tool). They just dusted their old OO jasmine database Engine and throw it to the face of the world like the E-Business solution.... You should look closely at what's already available, to see if you can do the same kind of things, or yet better ones, using free tools.
