  1. Backup is valid for the cloud too on Ask Slashdot: Facebook Archiving? · · Score: 1

Backupify (disclosure: I work there) does automated facebook archiving as well as other services. There are many ways to lose data, so more redundancy is usually a win.

  2. Freedom can be important on Which Phone To Develop For? · · Score: 1

Depends on what you are coding for. If as you say, you are developing for our own benefit to control your home automation, you'd be better off using Android as you'll have more freedom to innovate and be able to code as needed at a lower level.

If you want to sell it, the iPhone is probably the better of the two, as long as you can live with the limitations.

I've done a fair amount of coding with the iPhone, and while it is nice to develop for, I constantly chafe at lacking/bad functionality/APIs that I know I could do a better job of if the platform were more open.

  3. Re:DynDNS on Best DNS Service With API Access? · · Score: 1, Informative

Last time I checked dyndns strictly forbid using a bot to scrape and do a form submission, which is your only option with them if you want to do any more than basic IP->Host mapping. I've had very good luck with nettica - they have a complete SOAP API for all aspects of DNS entry manipulation. I wrote a ruby gem for this api so I could use it from within my rails/ec2 deployment framework

  5. Alien signal on Bright Star Getting Brighter · · Score: 2

Someone (I forget who) once theorized that the best way for aliens to contact us would be to modulate heavenly phenomenon in such a way that we would take note of it. For one, seeing as how we are constantly observing astonomical phenomenon, this would be a good way for the aliens to improve our chances of actually seeing the message, and two, we'd probably notice any glaring anomalies. So, Could this be the one? The SETI guys should sic their signal processing algorithms on the spectrum coming from this star.

  6. That was quick! on Loki selecting beta-testers again · · Score: 1

Thats a pretty quick turn around from announcing they would be doing a port to looking for beta testers (I take this to mean having something close to running.) I guess this either means that those guys at Loki have a pretty complete linux version of the mickeysoft APIs and/or that the guys at Bungie did a real good job of abstracting away from those same APIs. Maybe they should donate a little expertise to the wine project.

I'd like to know if this could pass the mom test. Someone should give it to their mom and get her to install and use it without any help...=)

Hmmm, I wonder if they will have any upgrade paths from the regular rio to this new one...

Agreed, wish there was some way to get autoconf to do a "make install-rpm" or something so that we could keep rpm in a happy state.
