Unfortunately, no business would pay 672 million to make their products into free software.. However, if they're planning to open any of it.. open their compiler! please, please, please. I would really like to see 20% better performance than vc++ in integer tests and precompiled header support. Oh yes I would.
Mp3 md5sums? take the first five letters? Sound al-right to me. Though, I'll have to make sure I keep them mp3s, and make sure that I don't change their id3 tags;)
Ok, here goes. This is what I think of the situation: A company needs a reliable application for linux, suited for their business needs, so they pay the gnome support people to write the application for them, and supply support for them, and release it under the GPL.
Make your buffer smaller dammit! Look in the preferences and change the buffer size for the sound driver.. It'll make the amount of ram xmms uses _far_ less. I use xmms and it works perfectly on my machine with a measly 32 mb ram, so stop complaining:-)
Damn, now I have to reformat my partiton. *sigh* oh well, the non journalling reiserfs partition sure was fast though.. hopefully the journalling one will be faster =). Maybe I shouldn't have hit the off button to test it;) Thanks
Read my post above on the other netscape post.. putting it simply... get the libc5 version not the "unstable" glibc version of netscape.. it's supposedly a problem with glibc malloc() and netscape which causes the bus errors.
AFAIK, most of the problems that cause netscape to crash are due to a bus error.. caused by a problem with netscape calling malloc() in the glibc version.... It was easily fixed for me, I downloaded the libc5 version and have been merrily browsing for months without a crash. This would tend to explain the slackware/netscape "uncrashable team" since it is the only distribution that still puts the libc5 netscape in their dist. The reason, it seems, that the glibc version is under the "unstable" directory in the netscape ftp archive is for this exact reason.
When a company needs to sell a product, and do by only paying what they need for banner ads, what would be the most efficient payment for banner ads? Targeted per click ads? Targeted per sale (more revenue per customer of course) or just a flat rate? What do the major companies do?
Any mailer that lets me use vim must be good :)

I tried the 10/14/99 release.. and I was _really_ impressed. I had tried M10, but this release far surpassed it. It was great. I would be using it now except for the fact that it uses 60% memory on my computer with a lonely 32 mb ram, whilst netscape uses 30%. However, I will use it for bug finding purposes;).
1. If you can do without them, lose the backgrounds.. They use up lots of memory. 2. Definitely _remove_ opaque move that comes on the default enlightenment. This makes dragging, and resizing windows look really, really choppy. 3. Another minor thing is the pagers. If you like them, big deal, they don't use up very much cpu / memory suprisingly.:) Have a look at enlightenment conf to change these options and more.. it's a must for anyone who wants to use E./* Offtopic */ If you still find E too memory/cpu consuming try windowmaker.
Although I'm sure Google is getting money from the netscape portal (they use it as their search engine after MS bought excite), google really does need to make money in some way or another. I'm wondering what that way is going to be.
If I was a domain name squatter, I would look in a phone book, for people with the last name of the company I was going to poach the domain name from. Therefore, I would at least have a chance at winning a lawsuit, and could probably make a cut of the money if the domain name was sold. Just a potential way for cyber squatters to make money.
A couple of things. While I'm willing to bet that mandrake's site has one server, and a limited bandwidth, Microsoft I'm willing to bet has many clusters of NT servers and an almost unlimited bandwidth. Although it doesn't look good, it isn't exactly a fair comparison.
The comment he made about the anti abortion site that told people the location of doctors willing to practise abortion is way off. AFAIK, Cult of the Dead Cow, does not update its pages with ips of hapless victims for people to pick on.. If they did, I would believe that would be wrong. However, they are not doing this. End of story.
Previously it was mainly programmers and people whom _weren't_ clueless that started using linux. With the advent of easy to use desktop environments, I believe that the amount of programmers starting just starting to use linux are becoming less compared to the "users". Thus the types of people whom just start to contribute are a lesser percentage of the whole mass. That said, I believe the amount of people whom use linux as a simple desktop environment and nothing more will start to accelerate. A thought. Lucas
It turns out that the firm that was suing Wizards of the Coast were suing its own corporate clients. The firm has of course withdrawn from the case. Read about it here . I guess they will be changing law firms;).
come with those cgi scripts automatically installed? I don't think so, thus it is not a problem with an out of the box distro, but rather their (or someone elses) programming.
Well I wouldn't exactly like a vital part of my life to BSOD on me, I'd only be able to see blue. No thanks. The os (if an os at all) would have to be stable and definitely efficient:) If it means windows CE, no thanks.
What if redhat did buy vmware? They could use some of that IPO money to buy it and then include it free on the redhat "official" cds. Redhat would have more people buying their official cds, and they could gain extra revenue from selling vmware to users of other distirubtions/and buyers of the GPL'd version. It would also justify the pricing of their distibution over the rest of the distributions.
Isn't the benefit of free and opensource software to have the code WITH the beta so that the people using it can fix bugs. By not using the GPL for the beta, Corel are losing a major benefit of open and free software. $0.02

$50 cash. Need I say more. That brings the sound card down to a 'reasonable' $30. Lucas

see google's own way of doing it :)

The info from the pokeleague is here. I posted it on the earlier story, though I doubt anyone read it.
