I don't think batteries are the way to go. Charging them is just to unpractical. I think the parent poster was right about the capacitor/fuel cell combination. Liquid fuels are simply the most practical way of storing energy and with a fuel cell you don't rely on combustion.
You missed the point. Most open-source developers are not out to "defeat" Microsoft. They couldn't care less about what Microsoft does, as long as they can do their thing. That's why Linus said "Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect."
In the end, what exactly does open source deliver?
Software. Open Source delivers software. Software that the user can use. We don't need to give him anything to take back. We don't need anything from him either. Open Source does not need Microsoft. Open Source will do just fine, regardless of what Microsoft does.
Of course we do. That's why no proper source will ever say "this _was_ written in 200 AD" but always something like "this was dated to..." indicating that that dating could be flawed. Whenever there is a new dating method, or new correlating evidence, the dating is re-checked.
I don't know where you got your ideas about evolution, but I think you should redo your research in that area. First of all, quoting Darwin is useless, as the scientific theory of evolution has been refined since.
Second, the theory of evolution it not about "survival of the fittest" and it does not say that any difference is cause for lethal competition. It's about disadvantages to the weakest, and what the "weakest" is is totally depending on the context.
And why you bring Hitler into your reasoning is a mystery to me, as evolution has absolutely nothing to say about individuals.
You where doing very well with your reasoning, pity you showed your delusions in that last 1/3rd of it.
I think "millions" is a lot closer to the actual number then "thousends". Depending on what you call a "source" there are probably already "thousends" of photographs alone. Considering that there where about 20 million military and civilian deaths, even if only 5% of those people wrote a letter to a loved one, that's already over 1 million letters.
Second, people referencing some old text does not make that old text any more true. The fact that there where only a few people that could write does not make their writing any more reliable. In fact, it makes it less reliable. The fewer people you have to "convert" the more likely it is you will succeed and the more likely it is that you will try.
The bible may be one of the oldest books around, but that does not say anything about the reliability of it's contents. Especially considering we're dealing with religion.
Science is about studying things and coming up with a hypothesis that can be used to make predictions that can be tested by doing measurements. If a hypothesis passes enough tests it becomes a theory.
If it isn't measurable, it can't be used in testing a hypothesis and thus isn't science and doesn't belong in science class.
The reason 3rd parties don't work in the US (and I guess also in Australia) is because fo the "winner takes all" system.
In the Netherlands we have a lot of different political parties and there never is one that is big enough to rule all on it's own. Therefore there always has to be a coalition and even the smaller parties have a chance to rule if they can negociate their way into the coalition. This means your vote for a smaller party is not wasted. As a result there are a lot of parties and you will always find a party that fits your prefrence and, as a result, there will never be one party big enough to rule on it's own.
Runoff voting doesn't fix the problem. Equal representation does.
I can confirm this too. As a kid I did eventually finish it, but it took a long time. About a year ago I tried it again, and had no problems at all running through it in less then 30 minutes.
I mostly agree with you, except on one thing: You talk about IP. You shouldn't, as they mean copyrights, patents and trademarks.
You're right when you mean patents and copyrights, but trademarks make a lot of sense, as there is no advantage in letting someone pose as someone else.
Of course trademarks cases should be reviewed and handled with care, no trademarking the colour red in general;)
If you don't want someone to use your photographs, you shouldn't give them your photographs... You don't need copyright laws to achieve that effect.
You've said it yourself. A "work for hire" style of agreement works just fine. Someone wants a photograph, he pays you to make it. No copyrights needed at all. You can even make a contract over how they are allowed to use said photographs, so you can use ordinary contract law to protect your photos in those few cases.
You could say that the system worked just fine before we had copyrights and patents at all. It wasn't broken back then, so why did they introduce copyrights and patents in the first place?
Even better, the recognise a Linux machine as a Personal Computer! From the about page:
Anyone with a PC (running Linux®, Windows® XP or Windows Vistaâ) Now people only need to see that a Mac is also a Personal Computer;)
That's probably why all those things can be turned of or on with a simple toggle. For example, I don't know of any ISP that strips executables without the client's consent.
The problems of regulation, distribution and education are exactly the same for the generics, and they can do it cheaply.
Besides that, I don't think market creation needs to cost nearly as much as it costs now. Basicly, medicine HAS a market (the people needing the medicine) so all that's needed is to let doctors know the medicine exists, and what it cures. You can do that quite cheaply with a free "new medicine monthly" journal.
I doubt that having only the problem of FDA approval is just as bad as the current situation.
I do use flex builder. It does make application development a bit less painful, but it is still lightyears behind on a Java/Netbeans combination in terms of development ease.
I think there are no gas stations in the Netherlands where someone else fills your tank. You always have to do it yourself, labour is very expensive here. With this thing disabled people can get their tank filled.
I'm very much aware of what it takes to get a drug on the market. Remember that without patent, a company doesn't need to publish the composition of the drug. How long do you think it takes to analyse the drug, reverse engineer, clone and grow the micro-organisms needed to create the drug, implement a production process and get your version of the drug and your version of the production process certified? That process takes years, requires a lot of capital and will have to be totally redone by the copying company. And then, once you have the product, you still have to market it, and history shows that the first-mover advantage is huge.
You're correct. A patent is on an implementation. Abstract ideas are not patentable. That's why software patents make no sense, as software is already protected by copyright. At least in Europe it still works that way:)
And with regards to drugs, if some else is so much smarter then you that they can produce the same pills a lot cheaper then maybe you're in the wrong business. Do you want to withhold the sick population from cheaper drugs just because the current patent holder is too dumb to produce it cheaper? I personally do not. Patents take away the need to innovate and thus they are bad.
Mega is a Prefix to Byte. This whole discussion is about the use of the prefixes Mega and Giga as a multiplier other then the 1000 they have been defined as.
Probably not, but even if it where it would not be stealing. My comment was on the use of the word stealing, not on whether or not this really was a case of copyright infringement.
If you are describing the universe.. then where did god enter the picture? There is no way to sense him, so therefore there is no way to describe him, so he shouldn't be in your model.

This explains it all really nicely:

"They" really like it if you make that mistake, but there is a big difference between the two.
If you are describing the universe.. then where did god enter the picture? There is no way to sense him, so therefore there is no way to describe him, so he shouldn't be in your model.
Yet the first letter of your model is God...
