    yeah i'm inclined to agree. ol' newty boy was pretty detestable but less so than most southern republican politicians (well okay thats not much of a standard...) seemed to at least have a _clue_ that half of what he was saying was bullshit, as opposed to most who seem to actually believe that they are righteous, and not just puppets for people with real power.

    briefly, chomsky believes that syntax exists independent of meaning and context. counterevidence comes from lakoff, wittgenstein, langacker, fauconnier, rosch, johnson, etc - modern cognitive science.

    Yeah all you /.'ers, read edge.org especially the lakoff interview. might help you understand why rules-based AI ain't gonna happen! i.e. the mind-body separation is a metaphor that hides the way that abstract logic uses physical schemas therefore the disembodied mind is a MYTH.

    you know, this whole phone network metaphor is bandied about a lot but im starting to wonder if it makes sense. i mean, processor speed is CHEAP. and people like playing games, they like word processing, they like having control over what they do. everyone talks about universal clients but theres already one - windows 9x. a lot of innovation is taking place using this platform - icq, real, etc. i think the really interesting apps are going to be involving some type of combination of fat server and medium-weight client...why NOT take advantage of those cheap mips. for chrissakes emachines has 300 mhz boxes for 400 bucks! scott mcnealy has absolutely NO vision. bill too - that 5 billion ms paid at&t to use winCE wont matter cuz the installed base of windows users is insurmountable for the next year and a half...and in the long term we're all dead.

    look i dislike microsoft as much as the next /. poster but COME ON. this is nothing, one million in cd's is useless to ms, its like less than one cent to you or i (those in the 30-100k bracket). microsoft is a TECHNOLOGY COMPANY. okay? they do technology. the internet. anything coming down the pipe, they gotta know about it. xml, impp, internet2, you name it they have to be involved. so get over it.

    sun, ibm are TERRIBLE consumer companies. especially sun, i mean they wouldnt know how to lead the industry if their life depended on it. theres a power vaccuum opening in the comp industry but it sure as hell wont be sun ibm or apple to fill it. well actually i think apple is a good consumer company, jobs seems to really know what hes doing this time around.
