Great work, really commendable. You didn't emphasis what I see as a crucial point in your tale: adult internet users are actually capable of "policing" their own networks, and at least some members are capable of changing their abusive or offensive behaviour in response to peer pressure. We don't need to be constantly nannied and censored. Government and legislation is supposed to be for issues that we can't manage successfully as groups or individuals.
They traced the problem to Visicalc (the first spreadsheet) and realized the Apple had software they didn't, and it was cheap. IBM must stop Apple before it grows too large. Things were happening very quickly, and IBM was way off the mark. There were feelings of panic.
Their response was to build a basic personal computer from existing parts - stuff like Intel CPUs, Shugart floppy disks. Make it better than the Apple, sold and serviced by IBM, but get it to market quick.
Yep. The entire PC program was manic and fuelled by paranoia - about Apple, Visicalc, Compaq, etc - and very much overshadowed by dominance of large and mid-range systems within sales strategy.
I want someone to crowdfund production of a smart device that can be a phone, or plug into a screen to serve as a desktop, but is also a mesh network node accessible by other units and potentially other devices, under certain conditions. I would also be fine with them deciding to take longer than 30 days, if they would charge less, and make more units. It wouldn't necessarily have to be wafer-thin or satisfy other trendy aesthetics, because battery life and not using conflict minerals would be more important. Is this an impossible dream?
The best device for elderly relatives to use is a younger relative. Admittedly they are plagued by unreliability issues, tend to borrow the car without asking, and expect a large inheritance. Still, it was an accepted mode of living not too long ago.
Why did they have to go and mention the Olympics!? I had just about managed to subdue the vile memories of Group4 security blunders, air defence missiles mounted on residential apartment blocks, the insane noise levels of fighter jets overhead, and people being arrested for not looking happy enough.
I switched to RSSowl.org desktop app. It was meant as the first of however many tests until I settled on a replacement for Google Reader, but it works fine so I am sticking with it.
We designed on paper with the help of a flowchart stencil, then wrote our code longhand on special forms, testing by reading, before handing them to a punch-card operator, who turned them into instruction cards with holes punched out in the correct sequence, ready to be fed into the computer. If you dropped that stack of cards it was a royal pita to get them back in order.
I am old enough to be a grandmother. I don't drink or use drugs, prescription or otherwise. And I absolutely do not use Internet Explorer of any version for any reason. I prefer Linux, but I also built a desktop about 2 years ago, and installed Windows 7 so that I could run proprietary software apps. If I have to start claiming benefits I plan to rock up to the local library and demand free access to their antiquated computer system to complete my application forms.

Would if I could but, apparently, I can't:
403. That’s an error.
Your client does not have permission to get URL /p/chromium/issues/detail?id=271239 from this server. That’s all we know.

Or maybe I blocked that url in my hosts file, no time to check right now.
I second stenvar's hardware/software combo suggestion - plus mobile dongle, and all including a mesh network node

Brit /dotters can show support for unfiltered internet by signing this Do Not Force ISP Filtering of Pornography and Other Content petition. Bonus points if you can sign even though it feels identical to nominating yourself for a secret "British residents who like internet porn" watchlist.
