  1. But... on TurboLinux & Linksys Announce Bundling Deal · · Score: 2

I see a lot of people comparing these CDs to the AOL ones. And, of course, the same applies to Corel, who will be (or are they already?) bundling their distributions with certain motherboards. But keep in mind that AOL is as popular as it is today primarily BECAUSE of all those free CDs. Even if most people throw them away, there will still be some who try it out. This is exactly the kind of push Linux needs to increase its userbase. Keep in mind that right now, most people using Linux are using it on servers. This could be an effective way of getting more people to try it on their desktops. Next, we need to start seeing Linux bundled in magazines and mass-mailed out to individuals, just like AOL did. All we need is a company ready to put the money into this.

Also, I like seeing the variety of distros doing these things. I'd rather not see any one distro capture the entire market.

The ksh was the first shell I learned to use, and like you, when I came to bash, I was disappointed by its limited globbing capabilities. But since version 2 of bash, if I drop a "shopt -s extglob" in my .bashrc file, I get those cool globbing features back. Very cool.

  5. LinuxCE on Future Linux PDA by Samsung · · Score: 1
In midst of this announcement, let's not forget the ongoing project to port Linux to existing WinCE machines. Take a look at http://www.linuxce.org to see what I'm talking about.

The LinuxCE group is still in its early stages, but they are making progress. If there are any coders out there that would like to help out, please do, as I would love to be able to run Linux on one of those things. The MS operating system has been the one thing holding me back from buying one.

  6. Aha! on Win2k Security holes found · · Score: 4

I think I've figured it out. All the analysts have been advising people for years to hold off buying W2k at least until the first service pack is released. So MS is going to release their first service pack right along with W2k, just so nobody will have an excuse not to buy.

    Makes sense to me :)

  7. The consequences of popularity on CA Announces Program Ports to Linux · · Score: 1

Let me begin by saying that I've never used anything from CA, so I am in no position to make judgements on their products. But after reading through the comments so far, I see a disturbing trend -- they all seem to be rather negative. It is unfortunate when companies port junk software to Linux and tarnish our image, but at the same time, this is a sad fact of life. With all the popularity Linux has been receiving, everybody will at some point want to port their software to Linux. And with so many companies doing this, it was only a matter of time before we started seeing a few bad apples.

What surprises me is seeing RedHat's name on all this. If the product is as bad as everyone is making it out to be, why would RedHat buy into it? Is it because they don't know, or do they have plans on improving it? Maybe they just got a good price. My thought is they just want to beef up their Enterprise package with anything they could throw in it, and in this case, the price was non-prohibitive to do so. Sometimes I wonder about the idea of "value-added" software.

Well then, by your analogy, Microsoft should be running the test on a NT4.0 system, because as you said, "Many exploits are platform specific." W2K is different than NT4.0, and the same exploits most likely aren't going to work.

How many people use Linux on PPC versus the number of people who use W2K on Intel?

If you look in the RPM directories, you should find packages called glib10-1.0.6-2 and gtk+10-1.0.6-2 (or something similar). These are the 1.0 versions, and can exist concurrently with the newer versions. If you have a recent version of Redhat, I think you will already have these installed, so you should be able to just upgrade the standard glib and gtk packages.
