    The transistion from 32 bit IRIX 5 to 64 bit IRIX 6 was a disaster at that time.

    So maybe they do themselves a favour not porting it to IA64.

    Nope. It is about companies going public, meaning becoming a company whose shares are traded at a stock exchange.

    And nothing new, this happens since a long time now. In the 17th century e.g. there was a big tulip speculation craze going on in the Netherlands..

    And nothing inherent evil, as it is a good means to acquire capital for young companies that have good ideas but not sufficient money.

    What blows this all out of proportions is that today stocks have become a common means of investion, not to say a public sports. And of course people love the sure bet this combined with the utterly overhyped Internet stocks gives us this crazy circus.

    I read some interesting interview with AMD chief Saunders two weeks ago, who was pissed that his company, which produces complex goods has less stock value than some Internet search engine.

    Let's hope the Internet bubble bursts soon.

    On the other hand this nicely illustrates why ETrade has felt the urge to use some filtering process. Of course lots of people want to make a quick buck, don't caring if the company sells sliced cows or produces free software.

    Too bad their scheme created anger among a crowd of what I think will be devoted share holders.

    This is utter nonsense. I think people are trying to stir up a bunch of negative crap about EGRP in order to short the stock. I hope this person does and ends up loosing their shirt.

    Amen, brother.

    It all turns down to advanced gambling with some more machiavelistic players, trying to change the odds.

    Just had a look over at the conversation on Yahoo.

    I know these greed-driven types from my time at a swiss research institute. Had one topic only during dinner:

    Stocks, stocks, stocks.

    And worse than ancient augures that tried to forecast the future from a chicken's innards or the flight of a swallow. Alas the pseudo scientific explanation of the day was quite entertaining often..

    Obviously they are scared like hell that some brothers and sisters here could leave more interesting tasks (moving satelites, inserting y2k bugs, using the military network for fun &c) and turn their attention to their cheap internet stock trading infrastructure.

    Tempting, very tempting..

    There is SliTeX to create slides for presentations, alas this program likley to be too complicated for Joe User.

    What this frame thingee in MS Office, is there some clone available?

    Or maybe some GIMP plugin that gives a presentation mode..

    wonder how well FreeBSD is doing over there...

    It used to be fine.. I notice the Japanese typically at these occasions:

    One must state albeit, that there is a language barrier. Most of us Non-Japanese don't speak Japanese and the other way round English seems to be hard for the Nihonjin too. If they cross it, interesting things get revealed often, like a cute new mp3 encode (gogo), last week.

    However this company, under its old name Pacific HiTech used to be the Japanese FreeBSD distributor, might be that this has changed.

    Dear penguin,

    Another note:
    The original Ensoniq Audio PCI seems to be closest compatible to the SB 128PCI, the PCI 64 uses a lower quality codec if remember right. ES1371 based cards might come with different codecs that comply to some Intel spec (you will notice when you read the specs).

    And I saw reports about ES1373 based cards - but I have no clue how this differs to the ES1370, ES1371 - and heck, where is the ES1372? :-)

    I hope this gives you something to go along.

    I can't believe people are just realizing this now... as soon as all the negative talk that came up about BO2K generated by M$, I was thinking "What about SMS?".

    I suspected that such stuff exists but was not aware of it being sold by Microsoft. So I am thankful to cDc, as they rose my awareness

    With the current video surveilance craze (nah, not only in Great Britain, here in Germany it started too) it is not a big surprise that they start to monitor your PC.

    Things to be watchful:

    • Did your boss donate a soundcard plus microphone to your work station?
    • What about that new web cam sitting on your monitor?

    Without my knowledge this would be a grave intrusion, certainly worth suing.

    Either use

    pkg_delete name

    or

    cd /usr/ports/appname; make deinstall

    The ports system is very useful.
    I often stumble accross new software by examining my CVS updated ports tree.

    Just type make and it pulls the tarball from the net and builds it. Works like a dream.

    In case anyone wonder why i didnt release under BSD : strcpy(argv[0],"httpd"); If that works, and you can see it as httpd under ps, that means your OS allows processess to rename themselves (bad! bad! bad! think trojan horse)...this is not true for sysv systems which have a sysv ps (including linux)..one look at that little excercise convinced everyone i know that BSD is full of holes..this may be the case or it may not but i trust irix (& linux) far more than most other OSes..

    The cameras and microphonese are here and won't go away so easy.

    As defence against this intrusion into privacy is at least very expensive, if not impossible, I am quite sure that we all will develop a kind of exhibitionistic don't-care-if-you-tape attitude. That's the cheapes solution for some aspects.

    And I wouldn't be surprised if rooms with granted privacy become the exception instead of the normal in the future.

    A great occasion for companies or unused temples by the way. Who knows what crazy offerings will result. Take the oxygene bar as a response to air pollution. Maybe one has to shell out some bucks in the future to have a nice private talk.

    I nitpick on the term 'natural' that is unappropriately used in the sense of 'ethical'. Personally I hope too that a good ethical behaviour also makes sense as a good evolutionary strategy, but this must not be true. It might be just pure luck for our fellow species that we tend to like other animals and plants around.

    Another item is that different evolutinary periods have different optimal aspects. If our ancestors would have been less cruel, the whole planetary life might have evolved to nothing more than some green weed.
