I have dealt with a number of credit card processing companies. Your best solution is to find one who does "batch processing".
ie. You send transaction details in a csv format (or whatever they might want to use - xls, etc) and they respond with the results. However, be aware many (most? all?) card processing companies have a "hold-back fee" of a certain percentage (anything up to 15% of the transaction) which they hold for typically six months before giving you the monies. I believe all take a percentage of the transaction also, rather than a set fee. Some have monthly fees, some don't. A lot depends on volume mainly, but can also depend on what type of industry you are in - whether your history could be a risk, or the general nature of all business in your industry is a risk. Have a good (really good) look around for what fees different card processors charge. There can be a lot more things to look out for than just that though...

John Howard's argument of "you do not realise this is what middle Australia want" is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. That statement is comparable to statistics. We all know about lies, damn lies and statistics.
Why wasn't I asked to vote on this subject, or the majority of Australians who also did not?
This law was rushed what seems quicker than our gun laws (which I commend, for good reason). Suddenly, we as a country have gone from "the lucky country" to "the backward country".
This subject obviously has a lot of passion for both sides of the argument, so it should be thought out very carefully instead of racing to decisions that affect every Australian without consent. We no longer have a choice. This is a sad moment in history that needs rebellion to correct it.
The biggest extent of this law I would ever like to see is the option of censored content. It is a parents responsibility to monitor the TV shows a child watches, as it should be for the Internet. Concerned families need to be provided the *option* of filtered content, not *forced* on other responsible adults without children who don't want it.

I think every ISP in Australia should completely ignore this law and refuse to pay any fines. It's extreme, but the government has to do something if the law is not being abided by. Then again, I suppose the law must be enforced...

Thanks Johnie, for jeapardising one of Australia's real assets. I see no technological future for Australia anymore, and I'm not alone.

  22. It's pretty easy, but... on Credit Card Processing? · · Score: 1

I work for a financial services company offering secured credit cards. The internals of credit card processing is more involving than you first think. Banks actually don't have much to do with it at all. All credit card transactions are made through a Credit Card Processing company rather than a bank. The banks are just a card issuer.

There are 2 types of credit card transactions...

    1) those that are swiped (physically holding the card)
    2) those that are not (internet, mail order, etc)

You need to arrange an account with an Online card processor who will offer you particular rates. Every business has a particular 'risk factor' for the processor to consider. This involved the type of business, physically where it is trading, the typical client of such a business, history of such businesses, etc for them to establish a rate.

The rates commonly will have a set transaction fee, a percentage processing fee, and a percentage held for some time (30-180 days) before remittance. Online transactions are a high risk factor so rates are generally higher than rates for a normal store-front trader. Blame fraud and the history of Internet business dissapearing.

When you have decided on a merchant, they will provide some basic variables to pass to their scripts for processing. What you need to look for is a company who can do exactly what you want them to do. ie, if you want to only process the order on your side *after* payment has been accepted, then make sure confirmation is able to be sent back to your scripts.

If you have other info that you need to pass through to process an order on your end (besides payment confirmation), you need to find a company who will pass all variables back to your scripts as well as payment confirmation. Some companies will have scripts that debit a card, then require a Continue button or something for the user to press before other info is passed back to you.

Basically, find out *exactly* how their scripts work and if you need something different, see if they can modify it for you or provide other options.

There are scripts available at http://www.cgi-resources.com/Pro grams_and_Scripts/ for 'shopping carts' etc if you need them for C/C++ and Perl and others

Without having a Merchant Account, your company name may not appear on your clients' statements either. Some companies can use your Merchant Account if you have one, and some others will have your company name appear on statements. With others, you should make sure people are made well aware of what *will* appear so you minimize any chargebacks.

Also, American and some Canadian processing companies use Address Verification System (AVS) for North American cardholders. This reduces the chance of fraud. Offshore processing companies cannot use this.

Thats about all I can think of atm but you can Email me if you need any other info

Just make sure you get rates froim as many processors as you can and examine their terms, the way their scripts work, and how often they remit monies. Some even want a minimum of say $10k (or whatever) before they remit on a normal basis.

Hope iv been of help :)

  25. This sux on Australian Censorship-client side filters · · Score: 1

What I hate about this censorship deal is that the supposed 'majority' of Australians were never contacted for their expressed feelings on the subject. This 'majority' was from a survey - and we all know the saying "lies, damn lies, and statistics." This does not represent the majority in any way whatsoever.
I beleive a better solution is to make it law to provide the *option* of filtered content, not to enforce it upon us. Existing clients of ISPs in Australia should have their accounts suspended until the account owner acknowledges his/her account to be filtered or not.

It is parental responsibility to allow/disallow their children whether to watch particular TV programs - and this is how the Internet should be.

ISPs in Australia should *ALL* rebell against this law by completely ignoring the situation and never paying the fines associated with this. Clients should be informed of this in advance for anyone who requires Internet access during what would most likely be a down period and provided alternate access.

BAH! its not like my opinion is going to change anything but I think this suits everyone
