    heh
that makes me think of how MS have influenced price drops in hardware (at least how i see it) by offering crap, slow OSs that u need a faster cpu, more RAM, etc to make it more usable

All MS users want a faster CPU so they can reboot faster
    heh

and win2000 is going to do this even moreso
what is it... required 300MHz cpu and 64Mb ram??
isnt cpu power meant for the applications and not the OS??

  3. not all geeks are equal on Ask Slashdot: Geeks Stereotypes and Their Origins · · Score: 1

As a self confessed geek, i also probably dont fit the stereotype.

Religiously, i suppose im Christian by family influence (not much of that tho), although my personal beliefs dont quite reflect christianity.

the only reason i am not atheist is for countless unexplained and uncomprehendable questions. such as "when did time begin and when will it end."
there has to be an answer but no answer fits
sure many say time is a circle but it had to start some time

"how vast is space" cannot be answered very well either, after all what is beyond space? there has to be and end, but at the same time there cannot be an end

things like this make me think there has to be a higher power, another entity(ies) that have this knowledge and this is what i call a god

i went to a catholic school and had christianity forced down my throat daily to my rebel

i quit half way through my final year anyway coz i was far from a geek at school - wagging, taking afternoons off to go down to the pub in town (hehe) etc etc

i love a cold Victorian Bitter and often drink copious amounts of it. btw, all you yanks who enjoy a Fosters, it is considered to be one of the worst in Australia
get a real beer up ya

i also love violence and can be jokingly sadistic when hearing of serious accidents, etc with comments of "cool! did any1 die?" to reflect that

some even think im evil, but realistically i am a pretty sane, reasonable person overall

as the subject says, not all geeks are equal ;P

i suppose all irc/icq/any other chat form will be banned also

the net will be so cool then
log into a search engine and thats about the limit of where u can go
    bah

the thing that really shits me is net users arent doing much about it and this helps the government *assume* ppl actually want it

if (once?) it is made law, i bet only then will the uproar will really begin

  6. Ask the media on Ask Slashdot: Another Word for "Hacker"? · · Score: 1

I find myself talking of 'hacking' (in the destructive sense) to ppl who have no idea the difference between a hacker or cracker
as someone said above 'if you cant beat em, join em'
the media wont change the meaning of 'hacker' coz it will confuse the public

why not ask the media itself what is a term they would use

  7. Times-a-changin on Ask Slashdot: Securing Web Servers Against Cracking · · Score: 2

You have to expect the media to use the word 'hackers' as it has become a defacto term for describing this activity.
Forget about computers for a sec, hacking something sounds like you are wrecking something - destroying it. The point is either word should be able acceptable. Hacking, cracking - both words have both double meanings in my opinion. It just depends on what context it is used. The word 'cracking' describes better some types of activity, and yet 'hacking' sounds better for others.
    e.g.
    Hacking into FBI site
    as to
    Cracking into FBI site

To me, 'Hacking' sounds better to describe the sentance. We all know what it is meant destructively, so who really cares?

I remember when Amiga were everywhere, Crackers were what we now Hackers, and Hackers were those who 'hacked' to cause data loss, etc.

Both words can be used in either way. Stop being so pedantic :P

What OS do u know of that multitasks so sweet in even 256k RAM. If you ever owned an Ami and others saw it running, you will probably remember a number of times people get amazed at its capabilites.
Amiga is a nice multimedia machine that admittedly can improve - which is why I am hanging out for their adoption of QNX.
