Seriously a dvd drive costs (16 bucks on newegg). As for pirated movies, MS is not there to help you.

First post - whining why this was even posted?

Most people will get a new computer for Vista, IMHO it'll be there gateway to dual core or 64 bit happiness; that and SLI.

The blog (oldnewthing) however rocks - read the history posts for an insiders view of MS. Very well written and intelligent.

  5. Interview list i use on Asking the Right Questions to a Future Employer? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Firstly come with two copies of your CV printed on crisp 100mg paper. give that over to the interviewers - more likely than not your recruitment agent will have completely bastardised yours. Make sure its fantastic if you do this.

Here is my list of question i keep to use:

    Position in the company
    1) What role do you see me performing in the company?
    2) Is it a client facing role?
    3) what would be typical projects i would be doing?
    4) what sort of department size is it?
    5) What scope would there be for me to lead a project now/ in the future(sort of relates to 1)?

    What the company does
    6) Which kind of projects are your bread and butter work?
    7) Do you have any major project (i.e. high profile ) jobs on the go?
    8) who are your main clients - do you get repeat buisness?
    9) which areas of the local region/world do you operate in?
10)Which parts of the buisness are you hoping to expand further (a good
question, which they shouldn't waffle on)?

    General training
    11) will they support you in your X institution training?
    12) will they support you in your future academic / part time learning (then ask about course fees and time off, don't get too awkard about this in the interview)?

I sort of used them as bullet points, you tend to find a lot of them get
answered as you go through the interview, they tend to ask themselves two
    questions:

    i) can you do the job (with a bit of additional training)
ii) will you fit into my team

all the rest are nice to haves

other useful tips are to take a couple of pens/pencils and a pad of paper,
i used to take a copy of all my questions to ask and obviously look down
the sheet, when they ask you..'so do you have any questions?'

As i said easy to use and it shows preparation (you did find out what the comapny does didn't you?)

    GOOD LUCK.

  6. And the answer is....... on Cooler Servers or Cooler Rooms? · · Score: 1

(note - I'm an engineer who does this every day, well on the days i can't avoid it anyway)

No-one will. It's like the question "When will Linux take over the desktop"? (sorry couldn't resist).

Cooling datacenters will always be a hassle. They're always packed into a corner of the building (uber heat build up)and no forethought is given to expansion - so when double the amount of IT is thrown in or the upgraded kit spews up twice the heat load the coolign system splutters.

The one true way of cooling is raised floor cooling, great for cable management and very expandable (move a rack, move a floor tile!)

The comment re the need for liquid cooling is probably based on faulty logic, i mean you can cool air down fairly low and air doesn't leak over equipment or need expensive liquid to run.

  7. Wow this is what i my job! on Emergency Cooling with Limited Power? · · Score: 1

There is no free lunch. Dry ice would be dangerous and too labour intensive.....Mixed mode ventilation (essentially openable windows with fans, and other variations) is a possibility. Whats the room like?

Cooling is difficult as you have to dump the heat somewhere....Do you have any extract grilles in the office? Any windows?

Without knowing anything about the situation. I advise: Get a ASHRAE certified (you are in america, i assume) engineer to look at it. Say you're looking for cooling that runs off a backup diesel generator.

    Good luck.

  8. Pinochet is no Benevolent Dictator on The Case for the Empire · · Score: 4, Informative

    From a background briefing.....

The report, based on nine months of testimony and research, describes several stages of repression. In the weeks after the military seized power in a coup Sept. 11, 1973, thousands of Chileans sympathetic to the socialist government were detained. Many were tortured, and several hundred were tried and executed by military war tribunals. A woman described the corpse of her son, the manager of a state cement plant, who turned himself in after the coup and died in custody five weeks later: "He was missing one eye, his nose was torn off, one ear was separated and hanging, there were marks of deep burns on his neck and face, his mouth was very swollen." In the next stage, the army's secret police squads waged a "systematic campaign to exterminate" leftist dissidents from 1974 to 1977, the report states. Inside clandestine prisons, people were tortured with electric shocks, choking, confinement and even animal rape. There were 957 victims who never reappeared and are presumed dead.[6]

    Thats a lot of benevolence.

Mmmmmm I suspect the author has been listening to CNN.
